I know you made this video two years ago.....but is it possible for you to make a tutorial about hammer setting a stone like this? Tell us how, and tips to make sure its done well, and why certain tools are preferable to others, etc.? This was a great watch, and I understand what you’re doing for the most part, but details would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing this video.
Master stone setting. Throw away the Foredom Hammer Handset. I must say the root of that great setting is the GRS system. Without it, none of this is possible. ( Customers ask for some of the ugliest stones set in their jewelry and it blows my mind.)
Great video, thanks Steve! Wondering what kind of punch tip you're using to set your stones (i.e. Round, square, size?). Love to try this instead of a rocker or pusher.
Thank you Jenn, I am using a small round in this video. Most of the time I use this punch for heavier bezels because it concentrates the force from the hammer into a very small area. I used light hammer blows and overlapped the blows. The diameter of the end of this punch is 2 mm and the edges are rounded off. Other shapes and sizes would work fine also.
I don't let the blue abrasive wheel that I use to smooth the bezel touch the stone. The stone is jasper which is hard enough that the polishing compound I use does not effect the stone.
I made this punch Barbara and others from a valve stem that came from a tractor engine. You could probably get some valves from an engine rebuilding shop. The steel that valves are made of is very good for making punches. I will make a video that shows how to make one.

Thank you, the ring is a cast all sterling piece and the bezel is about 1 mm thick.

Your hands are magic. Many times I manage to dent the stones if I do this. :( I suppose I do not have your calm.
The way I hold the punch and the way I rest my fingers on the vice has a lot to do with getting the job done without hitting the stone.

May I ask why you burnished the inside of the bezel?
I burnish the inside edge so it will smooth and shiny. Then I don't have to try to do finish work on it while it is against the stone.
What is the blue disc you use for polishing?
The blue wheel is a medium grit silicone abrasive wheel. It will cut down the metal and it leaves a finish that is ready for final polish
