Please, subscribe to Uncle Doug and his merry cast of guitar wielding kitties!!! This channel should be one of the vital sites for AMPAHOLICS! Again Uncle Doug has brought to light another rare, probably unknown amp. I started my infatuation with guitars and especially amps in the early 60s when I first heard my long lost cousins from Wyo. play early Venture's instrumentals through a big, 2 speaker tube amp that was loud enough to make my body vibrate. I went home and got started trying to play "Johnny B. Goode" on Harmony Stella guitar with string action so high you could have shot arrows with it. My break through was when I could make the 1-4-5 chord change, and hear and understand them! I broke all but the low E and A strings but I got it right. I am 70 years young and when I play guitar I feel just like I did at 13! If that is not enough to get you to subscribe to this channel, then maybe you are not an AMPAHOLIC! Thank you Uncle Doug for sharing, and teaching us all, your vast knowledge and experience. Guitars and Cars, from the sound to the paint they are loud, powerful and exciting! Thanxz

Hi Doug - I went to change out a bad wall receptacle today in my laundry room, one socket was dead. 10 feet away is another socket that works fine, and just for fun I tested it with my plug-in socket checker. Guess what? No ground connection AND reversed hot wire ! This house was rewired professionally about 15 years ago, and I never had cause to check these. There was a copper ground wire mounted inside the box but not connected. Well, I wasn't going to play any tube amps, phonographs or old radios in that area, but what if my son's friends came by and wanted to have some fun with some of my old instruments in that room when I wasn't home? I had an outlet in my music room with reversed wiring and didn't realize it (after years of use) until I plugged in a series-filament amp with a 3-wire chassis-grounding power cord. Fireworks ensued. You can't trust the wiring in your house, as you just found out. It must be checked.

Here in quarantine-land, my JCM800-2204/Mesa inspired homebuilt 12 inch combo amp is running sweet since its addition of a lovely reverb tank (powered by a PCL86 tube) and my motorcycle restoration (1980s Suzuki Katana) is going nicely (and draining the bank account again now they've relaxed the courier rules and we can buy a bit of stuff again). You're welcome, Phillip. We go to lots of car shows and everyone was getting bored with the Strombergs. Now that we're all fixed up.....the car shows are cancelled :(
In Dune, Gurney played his baliset using a multi pick, whatever that is, but I think Ollie and Jack use their own version of multi picks. Great, great artistry in that,

Well worth the second effort! It's interesting to see that all the "post-purchase" mods contributed to a worse outcome. Now that its back nice and clean it really shines. Nice playing Jack and Ollie!
Hi there everyone, I, myself and I, have no background in guitar amps, no history of ANY electronic bias,( excuse the pun) ,and yet I stand here, only to say that this fella with the talk over videos is a God. And his ultra dry humour is second to none.
@@UncleDoug My granny used to give me £10 every birthday with the words, "And don't spend it on records". I wisely ignored her directive - as my rather valuable vinyl collection can attest. So all in all it was probably best I didn't give her the pillow (though there were times I felt like it).
Well...I feel better knowing that I am not the only person who gets into projects that turn out to be nightmares. You always get out of a jam better than anyone else I know. Great work ! My first amp in 1960 was constructed by me and my dad from an old tube amp and several speakers we scrounged from old tv sets. It actually sounded pretty good with my Silvertone single pickup guitar. A lot of what you build takes me back to my early days. Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge....keep safe.
Glad you removed that stupid power switch someone installed. And yes. I’ve had nothing but problem projects lately too. It’s gotten so bad, I’ve pretty much sworn off accepting any new outside work.
It really does get discouraging when you encounter several completely botched, multiple-issue amps in a row. My favorite is when you finally get the %@$#&?ing thing working well.....and a completely new problem arises during final testing. I finally had to take a break and work on a hot rod. I swear, if it were not for my Patreon subscribers, I would change hobbies.
@@UncleDoug Here's my philosophy regarding botched/modified amps. The manufacturer built it the way they did for a reason. When encountering a malfunctioning amp that was modified is to return it to stock design. Then repair and update as needed. It's also a great opportunity to learn from somebody else's mistakes.
Uncle Doug, I love your amazing work but I got to say this: It sounds like you're accidentally combining the cameras audio with the microphone's audio. In listening to videos before SM57 and after, I still hear a gritting and "tinny" high frequency that stabs my ears. Take this advice for what its worth.
I don't think that's happening, Nat. The camera audio is deleted before combining it with the microphone track.....plus they are not coordinated. What you are seeing is not what you are hearing.
Fantastic!! I have been catching up on Uncle Doug vids that I haven't yet seen as well as rewatching my favorites so you can imagine my delight to be notified of a brand new one! I love it. I just paused this one long enough to chime in with that and that I've seen speakers that looked exactly like those before. Same baskets and same color cones. The ones I saw had Whizzer cones and were branded Stromberg Carlson. I'm looking forward to seeing if they put the whizzers on these cones. Well, back to the action...
Thanks again, uncle; for helping pass the time during this crisis. This fix was just what the doctor ordered. It kept my attention squarely on the screen. Tiki Cat do make good treats. Annamaet is better, but much more expensive. As always I trust you are keeping healthy. I do see the pruning of your fingertips; which is telltale of frequent hand washing. I can rest comfortably knowing you're heeding the CDC guidelines for protective practice. Please stay well, and keep your delightful family out of harm's way. Enjoy your weekend. We'll speak soon.
God Bless and Protect you and your family, We all needed to watch one of your amazing educational videos. You bring us all hope. Please stay safe, we need you!!!
Your analysis of the noise source on this video has been helpful for me. The conversion I did on a RCA400 projector amp to a guitar amp has been noisy (the one you commented on for me). I now have a sense of tracking it down. Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Love your content. I have recently begun to repair a Gretsch 6169 Fury piggyback and build my first amp a 5F1. I would not have tried it without you. Please keep it coming.
Good job fixing this amp!! Great video as always! I just finished a restoration of a Gibson BR-6F myself. Turned out well. Made a few tweaks to the circuit itself, but main needs for the amp were 3 prong power cord and filter capacitor replacement. The original Cornell caps measured about 2 to 3 MFD when they should have been 10 to 20 MFD. They were shot. Those old Gibson amps are really cool and fun to restore. I like the BR-6F more than the BR-6 as it has the volume control in the correct place and a Pentode front end. Have a great rest of your weekend and keep up the good work!!
Well Doug, this is why it's all ways a pleasure to work behind a novice that re-engineers "factory oversights." Keeps life from being boring. I bought a 73 Nova from a kid that had dumped thousands of his fathers money into shinny parts with painted on names. Nothing worked. Nothing... This is why his father was there to see to it his son got an appropriate selling price for the lawn art that eats cash. I paid him $300.00. It was a great car. I started the repairs by tearing it down to the frame. It was just easier.
Hello Uncle Doug, Glad your all doing well. Another awesome repair for the books. Thank you for all the great tips on amp repair and videos. Sometimes taking a break you come back and see it in a whole new light. Very nice work on amp and Rod. With all this home time, I would like to see one video per week, just kidding. Good here. All the best from Oregon, C.
Always a pleasure to hear from you, Cass. Yes, sometimes you just have to take a step back and catch your breath, then step forward......and chop that %#@$&?$ing frustrating piece of &@#&$% into kindling wood. Ahhh, I feel so much better :)
My Physical Therapist just gave me the okay to do stairs by myself, now I can get downstairs to my shop. Whole lot of guitars waiting to be repaired down there.
Hello sir, I don’t even begin to understand electronics, but famously enjoy your amp repair videos. As a mechanic by trade, I see your fuel lines on the ford have (ugg) screw clamps. IMO screw clamps to a mechanic are as what electrical tape is to pro amp repair technicians. Amazon sells a slick , entry level pinch clamp set for $22 . Pinch clamps can only be used once, but once you use them you will fall in love with them. They are clean, don’t cheese up your hose, and do not leak. They come in various sizes. I used them on my beetle restore....VW used them originally. Lovely truck!
Whew! Dodged that bullet UD! Turns out it was just a Trackhoe across the street out of ear shot... And now I'm fully stocked with beer, popcorn, Cool whip, and lots of toilet paper. I'm perusing some of your classics (and taking notes of course) and all is well up here. :) I hope all is well with you as well. Looking forward to your next featured! Cheers!
I laughed out loud at the brothel headboard commentary :). Another great one Uncle Doug and great food for thought around the grounding scheme. Hope you're doing well through all this!
Subbed and hit the "notify" years ago and this gem of a video is only now appearing in my feed! Always a hoot to watch you re-engineer the cool old amps I grew up with! The new throttle response must be a lot of fun! The '34 is looking good Doug!
Thanks Uncle Doug! Every time, now, that I watch your new vid, I'm compelled to treat myself afterwards with the pure and true Fender/Texas sound of "Khruangbin Full Performance on KEXP".
As we are locked down, the vital life-giving escapism of Uncle Doug's specialist knowledge as he journeys into the centre of some arcane amp from the world of yore, makes us all a bit like Arne Saknussemm, escaping from doing all the repair chores and cleaning we now have no excuse to avoid doing any longer. At least before this lock down, vegging out was a forbidden pleasure
Mini-bassman is great...but tunnel ram....OH YEAH! The carb-volume problem takes me back to my now long-gone 68 Nova SS 350....which at one point had a Holley 850 double-pumper. You can imagine what the throttle response was....once I replaced it with a 650 w/vacuum secondaries the response was much better.
Thanks for the video, Uncle Doug! The last car I had before graduating from college was a Dodge land yacht with a 383 4-barrel. I didn't open it up a whole lot, but it was always a thrill to hear that low-pitched woooooo and feel the acceleration. I can only imagine what TWO 4-barrels would be like. Cheers and stay safe!

Maybe one day I will dive in. God Bless you!
Hey Uncle Doug, I decided to go for it and build me the 5F1. I bought a small parts kit only for now, still need transformers. What’s your opinion on filter caps and transformers? Is it worthwhile “tone wise” to spend the extra on Sprague caps and CT transformers or are there some “middle of the road” brands you can recommend? The kit I bought comes w filter caps but they appear to be the less expensive ones. Thank you ahead of time and looking forward to your next video.
Great video Uncle Doug, really enjoyed the video. I have an R600 Electrolab, made with the worst form of chip board. My was noisy as hell. One half of the filament circuit was through the chassis. After cleaning up the wiring, it is now dead quiet and a great sounding amp.
Uncle Doug, interesting coincidence. About a week and a half before this vid, I explained the battery test to a fellow on a speaker forum I belong to. He has 4 drivers in an Atmos soundbar configuration, and I gave him this technique to make sure they were all in phase. It's amazing how depraved minds - I mean great minds think alike. KEEP ROCKIN'!

In Dune, Gurney played his baliset using a multi pick, whatever that is, but I think Ollie and Jack use their own version of multi picks. Great, great artistry in that,
Great job on the Harmony Doug, what a transformation !
Well well you finally succumbed to the Holleys, cant say as I`m surprised ,absolute classic set up ,can`t wait to see the road test, vroom vroom ,adrenalin rush!

Well worth the second effort! It's interesting to see that all the "post-purchase" mods contributed to a worse outcome. Now that its back nice and clean it really shines. Nice playing Jack and Ollie!
Thanks, Greg. It seems like counter-productive modifications are quite common nowadays ;)
Hi there everyone, I, myself and I, have no background in guitar amps, no history of ANY electronic bias,( excuse the pun) ,and yet I stand here, only to say that this fella with the talk over videos is a God. And his ultra dry humour is second to none.
Wow, Bruce, thanks so much :)
7591's were used in Ampeg bass amps

@@UncleDoug My granny used to give me £10 every birthday with the words, "And don't spend it on records". I wisely ignored her directive - as my rather valuable vinyl collection can attest. So all in all it was probably best I didn't give her the pillow (though there were times I felt like it).

Thanks, Marc. I'll send you a file hidden in a cake :)
I'm glad the videos bring back some fond memories, Doug. We will......you too :)
Thank you! I woke up this morning to this spine-tingling documentary. You made my day.
Glad you enjoyed it, Sting. Nowadays it's good just to be able to wake up.
Uncle Doug lmao, the old saying anytime you wake up above the grass is a good day.

I pointed this out before. To me it's some audio codec setting in the video editing software
@@UncleDoug it sounds great on my computer but ive got 8 speakers on my comp audio
@@joemcgraw5529 Thanks, Joe.
Someone else said the same things about the speakers, DE, but alas, I never pulled them to see about the whizzer cones. They may well be SC's.
You were quite magnificent on your description of the lovely jewel of an amp....! Seriously great video on the amp....!
Thanks, RJM.
The contact paper would go great with the wood grain panels on my 74 Ford Station Wagon. Great video Doug. It really made my day. Thank You
I have a feeling that a lot of the "wood" on the sides of old cars was actually a stout form of contact paper, James.
Very nice sir hope to learn more each time I watch your videos. Stay Stay safe. oh. Thank you
Thanks, you too!
Your analysis of the noise source on this video has been helpful for me. The conversion I did on a RCA400 projector amp to a guitar amp has been noisy (the one you commented on for me). I now have a sense of tracking it down. Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge.
You're welcome, James. I hope the video is helpful.
Love your content. I have recently begun to repair a Gretsch 6169 Fury piggyback and build my first amp a 5F1. I would not have tried it without you. Please keep it coming.
Good work, Robert. We will :)
Thanks, TG. You do the same :)
Wow Uncle Doug what a different! Night and day. This sounds amazing!!!

I found one. It suffers the same dull tone problems and the first switch by the logo has a plug over the hole and the guy wants alot for it.
@@robertisrael338 Think hard about buying it, Robert. As you saw, they can be a handful to fix.

Thanks so much, OK. I agree with your assessment of the screw clamps and will definitely look into the pinch clamps.
Great video for me - always appreciate a good hum troubleshooting saga. Added some good nuggets to my list of things to look for. Well done!

Wow.....Rev......that's one performance I must have missed. I'll check into it.

It's a challenge to drive properly, but once mastered, the acceleration, even from low speed, is fierce.

Thanks for the video, Uncle Doug! The last car I had before graduating from college was a Dodge land yacht with a 383 4-barrel. Hey Uncle Doug,
I decided to go for it and build me the 5F1.
