OMG! Watching James walking with a target in the rear and the robot following it behind is one of the most amazing and amusing things I've seen in a while! Fantastic! XD The armed AI controlled turret tho, brings nightmares from a time yet to come...
Really really well done! One of your best videos ever! Nice editing, impressive engineering and humor! Very very nice, and I am happy for you that you get these big sponsors!
Since you might be going down a path of putting accessories on top of a walking platform, it would be awesome to look into stabalisation methods. Maybe take inspiration from the new Ronin 4D camera?
So awesome! Well done. Seems to me if you train the dog to recognize the triangle you can wear it on your chest, and instead of "follow" it could walk in front of you and the turret can clear a room or hallway of targets.
Hey James, you always do a great job, but I think this one was especially good. The dog looks more clean/sleek with the skin put on! :) Although I still love to see the wiring harness, motors, joints etc! I think your openDog hardware is great, I think the motors are just about powerful enough for some awesome maneuvers, but it needs more smarts! Please try to incorporate an inertial measurement unit's data into a balancing algorithm similar to segways/your sonic bot, but for the dog! Such that the dog knows that it is unbalanced, falling in a specific direction, and decides to take a step in that direction to maintain balance. The algorithm is very similar to what you've already done with the sonic bot! Thank you for the videos, you're doing a great job. :) Oh! Almost forgot, the next *step* (haha get it?) after the inertial measurement unit step planning, would be load sensors in the legs of the dog! That way the dog can make balancing/movement decisions based on where it knows the ground is!
A good upgrade suggestion would be to put a gyroscope on the turret section so you could gimbal the turret then it would be so much smoother when the dog walks, add a high-quality wide-angle camera and you've got yourself quite a thing
Bet that "follow me" function would work with April tags (or QR codes). Then some cleverness with dyes and camera filters and you could have a high contrast tag for the dog, and camo for the operator.

Imagine taking your "Ranger" for a walk in the local neighbourhood and two cops on patrol spot it, dive for cover on seeing the nerf gun, and calling for backup in the form of a firearms unit. Seriously though, thats quite an impressive contraption. Can I borrow it to take to the pub ;) Now you need to seriously weaponise it with an inverter, and a CO2 laser (actually, bad idea!!) :P
Given that it's a fixed size target, you ought to be able to get a range estimation from the size of the match that the Jetson gives you, and you know the angle you've got the camera at, so a little bit of range compensation might help avoid those misses that hit the cups below the targets...
It would be really nice to see the turret in the stab mode. It would automatically reject some of the disturbances caused by the base motion and you could accurately aim on the move.
Would be so much better with a wide angle lens.. You should check some "RealSense" cameras from Intel. I use them at work for industrial computer vision and they are pretty cheap for what they offer (2-300$) They would give you depth perception too, instead of just using the size of the target. You could use object detection to find the target, and check that location in the depth image to find the actual distance in real world ( in mm ). Amazing video, just found your channel from the "Monowheel with Stability Control", nice stuff
Seeing it in follow mode I can only think of having tons of duplicate robots following a target on each other's back. Like a squad of robot dogs following each other in a circle
