My solution would be making a 'virtual' room this involves cameras in the corners of the real room and then uploading the real footage as updates to the virtual room, this will give a 3d position for all objects in the room and not need anything or anyone to face a specific direction to be detected. This also should help targeting because the cat is fully defined as a 3d object. Other than that this was an awesome project and was really neat to see how fast the cats learned.

So very cool...I wonder if a laminar flow nozzle would shoot a better stream of water
Awesome on the design...and absolute perfection on the SMD soldering!

Great! You can try Yolo8n detector which should work fine with RPI and similar computing boards. Besides, on top of the detector you can also setup to recognize batch of cat skeleton keypoints as potential places for aiming. Thus, it will allow to adjust the system to make this experience less harmful for cats avoiding headshots as much as possible.

Next time, check out a board called the orange pi. It has a rockchip processor which is faster than raspberry pi in every way. Also, unlike the raspberry pi 5, you can actually buy the thing.

If you were going for a clean build you totally aced it. For a home brew robot that looked super professional and worked perfectly. If you had also had the thing make a warning noise just before firing after the first couple of shots you could have got rid of the water and just had it bleep at the cat. Cats learn pretty fast and they would associate the noise with being sprayed. Seriously though I totally need one of these to stop my cats chewing my house plants. 🙀

That looks so clean, congrats on the project! I actually tried to do smth similar but using a steel pressure tank made for air spraying, definetly overkill as I found out later... I stumbled at the same hickup as you did, there are no accurate haar cascades to identify a cats body, only faces... as for the refresh rate I experimented with an SBC with an integrated NPU, which could also unlock more "smart" OpenCV options like YoloVx, which could be specifically fine tuned with a public cat dataset (I personally tried a Khadas VIM3, they have a non RPi compatible pinout, which could be a bit of a pain and you may need to modify your PCB/Software but they come with a 5 TOPS NPU baked in)

Amazing work! I was looking for something like this for over a year now. I tried 2 diffrent projects that used sprayer but there is always problem with getting enough force from servo or dc motor. Your project is not on thingiverse, will you upload soon or it is postponed because of "cats without a face"?

Train the system to detect cats from all angles.
People think AI needs perfect images to detect things. That's the opposite of the truth. You need to show it the dirtiest images so that it's trained to know how to deal with edge cases. You probably want to train the classifier on a decent desktop rather than the Pi or it might never finish...

PS - the "mist-generator" issue occurs because the water is not able to gain potential energy before it reaches the restriction. IMO, if yo fill the front 90% of the tube with gas (air), this can escape readily, giving the pressurized tank enough time to transfer energy to the water-column. Then, when the water actually reaches the nozzle, it will have enough momentum to delaminate as a jet instead of atomizing. Just a hypothesis. Haven't thought of a KISS-implementation either.

Well, I have a lot of questions. Why are we so impressed by technology but do not think about the injuries and pain that a cat could suffer? It's ridiculous how we have forgotten what it means to be human and to respect and love animals, especially those we bring into our homes. Why didn't you feed your cat properly? Why do you leave your cat alone with your meal? Don’t you understand the extent of your responsibility and all the possible consequences of creating such technology and demonstrating its value in this way? Imagine yourself in "cat's paws." You are hungry, your owner has not fed you properly and leaves you alone with food, or JUST leaves you with a delicious meal. You are a small cat and do not know that your owner, instead of being responsible and caring, has put effort into creating a machine that directly shoots water and could potentially break your skull or paw (when you fall after the shock). Well, haven't you imagined that? No sooner do you post this video to show how you are dealing with the cat's desire to steal your food, you will make a great impression as a smart and inventive person, but are you sure that you show yourself from the good side? Maybe think about your pet and put all your effort into creating positive things. For example, your machine could help develop a face-recognition function for crime investigation. I am sure you can channel your excellent skills in more constructively way.

      Hi Adele,
Thank you for leaving constructive criticism in a respectful and reasoned way. However, I must tell you that the situation is not as serious as it seemed to you. The cats are very well fed, it just happens that one of them is very playful and curious. Her reaction is not from pain, it's just the shock from something unexpected. The water jet doesn't have enough pressure to hurt. I tested it beforehand! Also, if you notice, the laser is not activated so as not to damage her eyes. Cats are easily scared by anything (sounds, themselves dropping an object on the ground, etc.) and overreact. As I mentioned in the video, after a few shots she no longer jumped on the table. You can rest assured that both cats are very well cared for and happy. Don't worry. Thanks for your comment!

If you're wondering why this has 447 likes out of 12k views, it's because shooting a cat with an airsoft projectile is pretty universally considered animal cruelty in the US.
