I've watched all the videos on the resurrection of this radio. I was very impressed with your work and knowledge. Very through. I have this very same radio in mint condition. Your work is impeccable. I'm here in the United States 🇺🇸. Congratulations and keep up the fabulous work...
Hi and thanks for your comment. Yes I was a tough radio to get going again. I am glad you enjoyed the series it was fun making it too. I am going to make one last video of this radio carrying out a full alignment before I ship it back to Ireland I’m just waiting for some trimmers to arrive from Digikey. Best regards from the other side of the pond.
@@SFLightfoot Thank you for subscribing to the channel. I am located a place called Alvaston Derbyshire within the United Kingdom. I used to live in North London but I move up here around a year ago I think I need update my QRZ page.
Thank you for your comment, It’s good to be back in action as you can imagine I do enjoy doing this kind of stuff and I will try to make more videos. Best regards
Thanks Alan I am glad you found the video of interest and just to let you know we have now managed to find a replacement coil and as soon as it gets here I will make part 2. Very best regards
Hi Gary it's a pleasure to hear from you as always and I hope all is well with you and yours. Glad to hear the 2955 is holding up. Re the R&S unit it was a unit I picked up as non working and managed to get it going again you know me LOL ;-D. Best Regards
Hi Andrew, thanks for the comment it’s great to hear from down under. I’m using a SONY A6400 mostly using the stock lens filming in 4K. It took me a while to figure out how to set it up but I find it works quite well.
Working on Surface mount components is not that difficult really , But you do need the correct tools and some experience , What a lot of people do is jump inside a radio that's all surface mount and don't know how to work on these surface mount radios and totally knacker them up .
Great videos John please keep them coming, I have a MK2 148gtldx for parts, if that uses the same transformer let me know and I will remove it for you, Thanks Dave
Hi Dave Thank you for your generous offer as it is really appreciated. Within an hour of releasing the video we managed to locate a coil and it’s on its way. Thanks again
Hi, I have a couple of these radios, one that works and one that doesn't, the one that doesn't just powers up and it has all 8's on the frequency counter and the channel display, do you have any idea as in which section on the radio might be causing this issue since you have been completely through that radio ? It has absolutely no sound and does not do anything when keyed up. Nice work and great videos !
Hi, sorry for the delay getting back to you. To be honest I am not really an expert with these radios and don't have one to take look at, however if it showing all 8's in the display I would guess that the PLL is not locking up which could be caused by a number of things. You can test the PLL lock voltage with a multimeter at test point 1 as outlined in the service manual alignment section. You should be see 0,2 to 7 VDC. I hope this is of help.
Hola Gabe, estoy ubicado en el Reino Unido y la distancia para enviarme la radio es demasiado grande. Lo siento, pero no puedo reparar su Cobra 2000 GTL-DX.
Yes I agree the parts used in these radios are rather odd as a lot of the parts seem to be made by KEC and they also appear to be copies of obsolete Toshiba and Matushita components. I am managing to work out some equivalents however I have not had any luck finding coils though. Thanks for your comment. Best Regards
I'd love to see these radios have a big hammer put through them, not worthy of the Cobra brand if you ask me.. get the display on 27.555 and TX in to a counter should read 27.555 (FM for example) but put it on 27.550 the counter won't read right, probably 1.2khz off.. love you to do a video and tell me i'm wrong.. not found one yet where the counter on the radio tracks the same as TRX.

You will have to show me the counter issue so we can take a look at it.
@@M0XFXUK would love to,
I believe it's a common issue with the design of the radio and not sure if it can be rectified.
