My parents immigrated from in 1974 from Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. Our wedding culture is similiair because manyy Southeast Asian countries have some Chinese blood lineage and influences in that regions for thousand of years.
Yes, China is very modern now. Do go back and pay a visit to your old hometown. They usually have an overseas Chinese museum in provinces like Hainan, Fujian, Chaoshan, Guangdong etc. At the same time also pay a visit to Shanghai, Beijing and Xián etc. There are many top 5 A attractions in China (of UNESCO heritage) worthy of a visit. Many overseas Chinese in Malaysia and Singapore have already been visiting for decades.
