Monday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Matthew 8:18-22
Biblical: Following Jesus Christ entails a radical change of lifestyle. This is what we could learn from Jesus in our gospel today.
St. Matthew introduces to us a scribe or scholar of the Law of Moses who expresses his desire to follow Jesus. Probably, this scribe thinks that Jesus is just an ordinary teacher whom he could go with wherever he went. But what he does not know is that Jesus is more than a teacher. He does not only teach; he also changes other people’s lives.
This is the reason why he said, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”
Jesus is trying to show the scribe that following him is never comfortable. There is a possible big change could happen. Kung sanay ang eskriba na may matutuluyan o sa komportableng buhay, kay Hesus hindi ito ang puwedeng asahan. Dahil kahit si Hesus wala man lang matutuluyan.
Pinapakita ni Hesus na hindi lang siya isang guro na nagtuturo, kundi isang tagapagbago ng buhay. Kaya ang pagsunod kay Hesus ay isang pagbabago ng buhay.
St. Matthew did not reveal whether the scribe followed Jesus after his statement. But it does not really matter. Jesus’ main point is to make us understand what a true follower is. Now it is up to us to discern whether we follow Jesus or not.
My dear brothers and sisters, to follow Jesus means to be like Jesus. It is a state not to change one’s location but a change of one’s life.
Ang pagsunod kay Hesus ay nangangahulugang pagiging katulad ni Hesus. Ito ay hindi pagbabago ng lugar dahil sa sinusundan, kundi isang pagbabago ng buhay.
