Great video! The Film Look Creator in Resolve is such a good tool, but I hadn’t considered those in-app Kodak LUTs you mentioned. I’ve also found the Kino app to be a bit more fun to use than Blackmagic, but an ND filter is a must when filming outdoors otherwise the shutter speed is something crazy which you see when reviewing the footage. FYI I just got the Tiffen magnetic filter which seems like the best option to keep things minimal and not need to use something like a BeastGrip cage. I’ll then use a 58mm Nisi Variable ND so I can maintain 180 degree shutter at all times.
Hi there! I ran into yr video first time. I’ve been trying to learn how to use the iPhone 16pro to make short movies. Step by step that’s the way it needs to be taught, thank you! I subscribed to learn more from you.
Just got my 16 pro about a week ago. Been happy with it but hopped right into ProRes. Your footage looks great buddy. Now I will have to explore some ProRes vs H.265. Went with the 1TB 16 Pro to catch more footage internally but it still is a different lifestyle to fill up my iPhone in day of filming, lol. So HVEC would be nice to go to when needed. Enjoyed the vid, thanks!
Link to your vid is on top in my shortlist as a reference - very well paced and very complete, from camera settings all the way to grading - love it. Just wondering why you are not using Phantom LUTs (which clearly you own because you use them on your iphone). I've seen some videos where they compare CST nodes with Phantom LUT nodes to bring footage into rec709 and the Phantom LUTs seem better.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. 😊 Regarding Phantom LUTs, you're right-I use them on my iPhone and sometimes also for color grading. For this video, I chose to focus on CST nodes for their flexibility and because I wanted to show a workflow that doesn’t rely on external LUTs, making it more accessible for everyone. That said, Phantom LUTs do give a fantastic Rec709 result and I agree-they’re definitely worth exploring! I might even make a comparison video in the future. Thanks for the idea! 🙌
Auto exposure also changes your shutter speed/angle, though. That's a no-no for filming. Locking your ISO is also recommended in most cases, but I wish Blackmagic offered an option to lock the shutter (usually at 180 degrees) while allowing auto ISO for shots where the camera moves through very different lighting conditions. Cinema P3 and Protake have that option.
Honestly, when challenged to tell the a7s apart from the iPhone I could. BUT It was pretty close and impressive. I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t asked

The Vivo X200 Pro also has a wonderful LOG profile, maybe you can test it out😁and also is that right the H.256 / HEVC of iPhone has already 10 bit 422?
In my opinion, iPhone 15 pro and 16 pro are very good at certain types of shots. Wide angle shots, landscape, sceneries. Probably just as good as a regular camera, and you can create great pieces relying solely on those type of shots. However if you start comparing shots where obviously the regular cameras with big lenses outperform, mainly all types of shots that are subject focused and aim to get the subjects cleanly separated from the backgrounds, the iPhone will obviously show its limits although it's not as bad as it used to be. Something that I find a bit dishonest when people are doing shot comparisons between iPhones and regular cameras, is that they will often only pick types of shots where the iPhone excels, so obviously it's hard to notice a difference. Nobody ever throws in heavy separated and bokeh shots from the regular camera because obviously the difference will be easy to tell, and you don't see many low light shots either, but in my opinion both of these types of shots should always be included as well, so as not to unecessary mislead people into thinking the iPhone can just do everything a regular camera does and "you can't tell the difference". Show both the shots where the iPhone can compete easily, and shots where it falls off. All that being said, the iPhones are getting insanely good and the fact that even a portion of the shots can compete with a regular camera is crazy.
Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to write such a thorough comment-I really appreciate it! I agree with all of your points. For the comparison, I tried to make it as hard as possible to tell the shots apart and specifically chose shots that weren’t heavily separated through optical focus for example. Otherwise it would have been really obvious. But fair point-those kinds of shots might make it seem like smartphones can replace bigger cameras right away. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
Hi, thanks for the video but it should be told that Europe 50 Hz AC frequency has nothing to do with FPS, you have problems only if you are filming some lamps (and not all). Your Video inspired me to try it out, but this doesnt quite work for me. I've got the 16 pro and copied all your settings, but my computer is running on Windows I stored the videos in my iCloud. When I've downloaded the Files and loaded them into davinci resolve, they were only detected as some sort of audio file... ChatGPT told me, that the regular Davinci Resolve cant handle HEVC files, but in your video it doesn't say Davinci Resolve Studio in the top left corner (ChatGPT suggested, that only the Studio version can handle HEVC files) can you help me out?
Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, the free version of DaVinci Resolve can handle HEVC (H.265) files, but you might need to install the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store (a small fee applies) if you’re on Windows. Also, keep in mind that the free version doesn’t support hardware acceleration for HEVC, so performance could be slower. If your footage is 10-bit 4:2:2, it might not work, and you’d need to transcode it to a more compatible format like DNxHR or ProRes using a tool like HandBrake. Hope this helps!
My guy, do you have issues with the .5/tele lens on the blackmagic app with stabiliser on ? Or do u just use the main lens? And did u use gimbal in this vid?
@FarisdaniielTest so weird! I remember having some issues just when I bought it and first used it but that disappeared shortly after. Dumb question but are you using the latest app version?
@@pierogiannist Ive just tried reinstalling it and it seems to be the same. Funny thing is that it works if i make a camera movement. But the problem came back when I tried to get a static shot. Have you tried doing a static shot on the wide/tele lens?
I have the non max with 256 GB. In image quality, you won‘t notice a difference between the non max and the max. and if you shoot in HEVC like I do, you will not need a lot of storage on the phone.
@@pierogiannist It's not about a quality difference. I was just curious whether it might be better to have a slightly bigger screen. But I guess the screen difference is not that big. I also wanted to use the Prores codec. With the Blackmagic Camera App it's supposed to be possible to record those files directly onto the phone and not neccessarily on an external SSD. That's why I thought about getting the 512 GB version.
I'm stuck for the time being shooting on a standard iPhone 14. After exhaustive testing, I'm able to ONLY shoot 24p to my external SSD in ProRes 422LT with no frames dropping thus stopping recording. Anything more than 24p 422LT stops recording to my external SSD after about 30 seconds which I'm guessing is due to the Lightening port's limited data throughput. Regarding post - I struggle with Resolve getting the project settings right - any suggestions as nothing I've found so far seems to work. Final Cut seems to get it right at the outset and maybe that's all I need but thought I'd ask since Resolve is truly cross platform hardware wise.
Hey thanks for your comment. What do you mean by not getting the project settings right in resolve? does it not look right or not perform well? what‘s wrong exactly?
@@pierogiannist My footage looks over exposed and way too contrasty, yet when I bring the same clips into Final Cut, they look pretty much as when I play them back on my phone. I would rather be using Resolve as my one tool for post work but it seems there's alot more hoop jumping to accomplish the same thing in Final Cut. Having used Resolve for mirrorless camera footage has been straight forward but iPhone footage shot in HDR Rec 2020 just seems to not work right - Have tried so many different project/clip grading options I've all but given up.
got you. make sure to have your project settings like this: color science: davinci YRGB timeline color space: Rec.709-A output color space: same as timeline - and now in your color grade add a CST (color space transform in the effects) on a node and set it like this: input color space: Rec.2020 input gamma: Rec.2100 HLG output color space and gamma: same as timeline let me know if that works for you.

ChatGPT told me, that the regular Davinci Resolve cant handle HEVC files, but in your video it doesn't say Davinci Resolve Studio in the top left corner (ChatGPT suggested, that only the Studio version can handle HEVC files)
can you help me out?
I‘ve been using all three lenses so far without issues!
@@pierogiannistdamn, the whole internet is having problems with their .5/tele lens + blackmagic apps with the stabiliser turned on. So does mine😢
Have you tried doing a static shot on the wide/tele lens?
dang.. Haven‘t done a static shot I think. Have you tested different stabilization options in the app as well? I have set mine to cinematic.
Do you have the iPhone 16 Pro Max or the non Max? And how much storage did you choose (256 or 512GB)? I'm still contemplating about these things.
That's why I thought about getting the 512 GB version.
dope
I’m glad I don’t need pro res😂
Now let's take a look at DJI Osmo Pocket 3.
DJI are you listening?!👀
Having used Resolve for mirrorless camera footage has been straight forward but iPhone footage shot in HDR Rec 2020 just seems to not work right - Have tried so many different project/clip grading options I've all but given up.
got you. make sure to have your project settings like this:
color science: davinci YRGB
timeline color space: Rec.709-A
output color space: same as timeline
-
and now in your color grade add a CST (color space transform in the effects) on a node and set it like this:
input color space: Rec.2020
input gamma: Rec.2100 HLG
output color space and gamma: same as timeline
let me know if that works for you.
But why reels n shorts are looks good with professional cameras?
what do you mean?
wat
I just got a 15 PM because of the stupid camera button on 16 😂
good choice😅
damn footage looks comparable to consumer level cameras a6200
Camera tech has come a long way!
I knew the Sony was B the whole time, you can just tell
if you know, you know.
The change came in 13… Since then everything is just an improvement and really nothing new… Unless they go back XR design with one camera and make its lens interchangeable 😂
An XR with one interchangeable lens? Apple, are you listening!!? 😅
👊👊💥
🤝🤝
Imagine a professional shoting a wedding with an i phone..😉 Propably he will never get paid. mobile phones may continue to evolve with new tecnhology and great image, but some things will remain classic imo
but what if it looks absolutely awesome in the end? :D hehe, but yeah I absolutely get your point. and even just holding a "real" camera feels a lot nicer.
@@pierogiannist you can definitely make them look nice with tons of lights but still pain in the ass
Iphone's workflow is an absolute nightmare lol
For hobbyists probably fine
@@bluenick4577you clearly don’t know much about videography from your responses.
Damn 💀
Vivo x200 pro
I get where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. While the out-of-the-box image might not be groundbreaking, that's not where the real potential lies. When you shoot in LOG and with a high bitrate and properly color grade it, the results are far from boring. In fact, it’s impressive how much detail and cinematic quality you can pull out of the footage with a little post-production work.
Lol u are not saying the truth too
how so?😅
Do you have LUT? 🥹
Have a look at 16:47 👀 Just use the free ones in Resolve!
