the biggest difference is that in the sound tracks, Dolby Atmos uses "objects" that make it possible that while you are watching a movie, the sound can reach you from anywhere,While in Dolby digital the sound is limited to output only from the 5 speakers of your home theater system (I don't know if you could understand, since my English is bad, but I hope it helps you anyway)
atmos can support up to a 7.1.4 setup with it's sound channel codec. the 4 being ceiling speakers. Atmos contains sound recordings of sounds coming from above the listening position. PL 2 is a different technology designed to proces sound from a stereo source into a surround setup, it's not really limited to a set amount of channels, but it doesn't contain height information of the sound, contrary to Atmos
