  • Action from the FA Cup quarter final between second division Watford and first division Liverpool. The game was played on Sat 21 Feb 1970 and the final score was Watford 1-0 Liverpool.
This game was regarded as the end of an era for Liverpool fc..as Bill Shankly was quoted as saying he would "break up" this side after the defeat and bring in "new blood"

What a great day that was, one of my very earliest memories of Watford FC, I couldn't believe the sea of red at the Vicarage Road end, I was only 10. I'm 61 now. When Barry Endean scored, old men were jumping up and down hugging each other throwing their hats up in the air.

I was at this game I’m sure, my dad used to take me to all the Watford games when he worked there in the 60’s & 70’s. State of that pitch! You had to be good to play well on that 😬

I think Watford did Liverpool a favour here.
St. John, Yeats, Lawrence and a few others looked a long way past it. Shankly had probably already realised it but may have been in denial, simply loyal or both. This game made the decision for him to make the changes needed. Liverpool fans owe Watford a debt of gratitude!

After tripping over a chain link fence in Vicerage Road running to this match - my sock filled with blood whilst queueing and I had to vist the St. John's first aid room based in the main stand. Sat outside it, Ken Furphy came over and asked if I'd been fighting. After explaining and showing him the ticket that I'd queued up for all Friday night the week before to get - He asked the St. John's ambulance man to strap me up for the stitches I needed after the match, and then promptly took me down to the pitch where he sat me on the bench! This was the most wonderful experience a seventeen year old could ever have - Not only did I get to go in for the half time chat and tea - we only went and won the game........... It still gives me goose bumps and I still have the scar to prove I hadn't dreampt it. R.I.P. Ken you super dream maker.

@@sgu02nsc66 Sorry for the delay in getting back to you (just found your comment) - Ken gathered the players into an all listening tea drinking silent huddle - He then set about singing their praises one by one in great detail. Everyone (including me) then totally believed that the job of beating the mighty Liverpool could definitely be done here at Vicerage Road.

As a Liverpool fan I was there on that day to see us get beaten. After this game, Shankly broke up the 60s team and rebuilt with the likesof Clemence, Lloyd, Heighway, etc. The rest is history. Thanks, Watford for being a part of my teams greatness.

I saw Watford play Leicester at the end of January 1970. The atmosphere at Vicarage Road was immense.

Just watched this, I used to be there at Vicarage Road, I was there in 1970. Stewart Scullion was a great winger, I'm sure he should have been playing in the top division. Strangely I am married to a Liverpool supporter - he hates me mentioning this match !

These modern stadiums are nice and all that but they lack the atmosphere of the grounds of the past. I started to go to Football in the late 80's and even Wembley was run down then.

A pivitol game in the history of Liverpoo FC. The defeat here prompted Shankly to finally break-up his trusted 60s side, realising some of the players here, notably Lawrence, Yeats, St.John and Strong were way past their best. Within the year he'd introduced Lloyd, Toshack, Heighway and, importantly, Keegan to the side.

Great Video - thanks for posting. I'll bet the maternity wing at Shrodells had a larger number of male visitors than usual that afternoon. The view before the Rous stand was built was great.

You're right. I was in Shrodells in 1963 to have my tonsils removed and they kept me in for a few days. I remember sitting on the window ledge watching the game on saturday. But could only see half the pitch because the old stand blocked the other half!

    Hi there,
I know Ian Endean who is Barry Endean's cousin. It is funny 'cos I watched this match a few times on ESPN and also other football docs, and when I first met Ian I did wonder if he might be related. Ian confirmed he was, and in fact, he is a dead spit of Barry!
A well headed goal although I do think Tommy Lawrence should have saved it! :-)
    Best of luck!
