well I went to petsmart they told in how to do it but when I saw ur video I just said holy shit I'm missing bio foam max which is on the way from amazon for the media I'm using quARTZ bio balls &fluval External Power Filter Pre-Filter Media thats about it
I replace sponges using Swiss Tropicals foams. I normally leave the blue coarse, replace the white with slightly finer foam, then use the bottom can for even finer layers and a phosphate pad. Then I put cheaper bio rings, then matrix, then biohome ultimate...essentially saving the highest quality biomedia for the last stage so any particulates that may find their way through are picked up by the cheaper/less effective biomedia. I do not use purigen or carbon, no need for me to date. If the water changes and parameters are on point you should not need those...although if you tend to over feed or supplement food, some of those can cloud water.
I put my new 65 gallon tank up and it way crystal clear for 2 days and out of no where the water is cloudy. I have no fish in yet. I have the 407 canister on. I do have carbon in it but no ploy fill. Do you have any suggestions. Please HELP!!
This was an AMAZING video for super beginners! I am not a super beginner, as I've been surrounded by aquariums my whole life, but I just bought my first canister filter (Fluval 307) and I was little lost on how to arrange the media. I'm not lost anymore, and you were so engaging that I watched the entire video rather than skipping around to find what I needed. You provided so much useful information and those pro tips were helpful for both beginners and those who have been doing this for a while. Very clear, very organized, and right to the point with valuable information. Thank you!
I adopted a neglected red eared slider from another teacher in September to rehome in my middle school’s library. Emilia now lives like a queen and has grown almost twice her original size! I appreciate that your videos are easy to understand so even this beginner turtle mama knows just what to do to keep her baby healthy and happy.
Kaveman Aquatics, this is one of the best youtube instructional videos I've ever seen. Clear, organized, high quality, and straight forward. Beginners and experts can both enjoy this video. You know what you're doing man, keep up the good work. Liked and Subscribed!
Every once in awhile I have to come back if I forget the reasons for or the order of the filtration, and then I watch the whole episode again. Thanks for being here. :)
Great video!!!! Thank you!! One thing I’ve learned with chemical filtration: I don’t use charcoal/activated carbon in heavily planted tanks. The reason is algae. Activated carbon absorbs everything including essential nutrients, but leaves enough for algae to grow. So for heavily planted tanks, I would only use carbon temporarily to remove medicines etc… Long term use will deplete nutrients for plants, but will create a haven for algae. Of course, not to worry in tanks with no plants. Thanks again for this really comprehensive video. You do a great job!!
I want to thank u!! there r a lot of popular ppl on TH-cam that try and explain and teach us about aquariums but half the time I end up more confused and frustrated ....but the way u explain everything made it so easy to understand ...i really appreciate u taking the time to put out these wonderful tutorials...
Tiffany Walton Thank you for those words! My goal is to be as helpful as possible so feedback like this is always appreciated!! Glad you’re enjoying the channel! 😊
Fascinating to watch. Every novice aquarist should absolutely watch this. In fact, if you’re interested in keeping fish, you should just go ahead and subscribe. Kave Man videos have great production, they move through the topic thoroughly, quickly and stay right on point without all the goofy tangents. It’s always enlightening to learn such simple, but all important details and why. Well done, Kev & the Kave Man crew!
just ordered the Fluval 407 and waiting for it to get here this afternoon. This was a great video! Ive never used a cannister filter before, now that were buying much larger tanks, I know they are best. Now I know how to set it up! Thank you
Thanks bro! Your video confirmed my suspension of the direction of water flow. I am setting up a 60gallon tank in my Mrs. Home office. I am doing it all from the secondary market. The tank I bought comes with a 407, no book and no gasket(both currently on order) I'm thinking angels, acara, and eels, with a smattering of kuhli loaches and corys. Keep it up! Great " Fluval" info. Much Love, Coop.
Thank you, this is the best video available for the Fluval 307 filter media order. You’ve got a professional style, I think you’re going to do well here!
Bruh. Just want to say thank you for all of your videos and information! Before I watched your videos I struggled to really understand how water/filtering works in aquariums. I struggled with keeping water clear, it would always get green, the glass would always get hella algae on it, my decorations would slowly get black over time, fish dying, it was frustrating. After watching your stuff, I have a fluval 407 in a 55 gallon setup exactly the way your videos show. I now have crystal clear water, my decorations still look new, and no fish have died in 9 months since I watched your stuff and got educated. My fish all look happy and are FLOURISHING and now I thoroughly enjoy this hobby now that I'm not struggling. I threw my uv filter away which I used to depend on for clear water. I don't need that sh*t now that I'm doing stuff right. All this to say THANKS DUDE!
Just wanted to say Thank you for confirming my potential choice of filters. Your explanation was very easy to understand for newbies like me. Mahalo!!!
By far, your knowledge and videos are the best I have watched. My tanks are now amazing, with stunning clarity. Thanks to you!!! Seriously, I have multiple tanks with canister filters, and the water is unbelievably clear after following your guidance.
Dude. I watch a lot of aquarium videos, and I'm usually fast forwarding... not this time! You are seriously badass, sir! Clear, concise, informative- LOVE it! Liked and subscribed. 👊👏
I’d add that soap or detergents should never be used when cleaning aquarium equipment. I love your comment about not necessarily needing carbon. Regular, partial water changes will yield greater dividends.
Just wanted to say this was extremely helpful and you did a great job. I am not exactly a Canister Filter novice but I'm certainly not an expert. I have a pair of Marineland Magniflow 360s and one has basically failed - started leaking about a year after getting it, replaced the gasket and o-rings (at $15 bucks a pop plus $10 minimum shipping...) - and a year later it started again. Tried resetting and repacking it, no good. Tried replacing the gasket and o-rings again, leaking worse. Tried everything, nope. (the other one has been golden.) - Just got a Fluval 407 Performance and I was a little lost - it's much different, the entire system is different, setup and parts and just everything. This was very helpful, thank you very much!
Welcome to the 407 world! Glad you found the video helpful. I have more videos on the 407 you may find helpful as well. Heres a playlist to check out - th-cam.com/play/PLP5OXTIIDO8PRpx-RbKsLopU54H_0JImN.html
Dude, thank you so much for this video! I've been searching far and wide after getting my 107 to explain this process to me. You hit every question I had and more! I had hang on filters when I was younger and decided to educate myself more on Aqautic Housekeeping and read canister filters are the best so I bought one not knowing anything about them haha so thank you for this bro!

Love ur vids loads of good info. Was going to get a fluval 207 for my next 33 gal planted and fish tank but then found the oase biomaster with a built in heater. Ya its more but an easy swap. prefilter and a heater just made it worth it for me. Watched this cause i saw some companies packing there filters bio first then foam and thought that was backwards compaired to there flow patern and u confirmed it.
Hey man just wanted to say thanks for the video! Ive been battling cloudy water in my Cichlid tank on and off for about 2 years. When I got the 407 it fixed my problem for some time but eventually the cloudiness came back using the setup it came with (1 tray of mech, 2 trays of carbon/Zeo carb, 1 tray of bio media). I set mine up like yours and within days it's more clear than it's ever been. You rock dude.
Great setup. I copied you at first but got rid of my chemical filtration. I now have my first tray Fluval Prefilter, second tray sponge and floss, and last two trays as bio media. No real need to have chemical filtration once you have bacteria established.
Its true that chemical media is not necessary, its completely optional. But chemical media has nothing to do with whether you have bacteria established or not.
Great video! Thanks for breaking it down so clearly. I just oped my Fluval filter and one tray had a green phospate pad. Can you explain where this should go? They packed it in the 4th tray with two more bags of carbon.
Thank you so much for this video. This video showed me I was putting my canister together a little backwards this whole time. I do have 2 questions. 1. Because if this video I learned my polishing pads should go on the lower tray with the sponges. Which means I put my carbon and ammonia remover on my top tray. I hope to replace the the carbon and ammonia remover with zero carb. What is your opinion on zero carb? 2. I keep my canister in a tray Incase of leaks. Recently it has been filling the try very slowly. Is there an easy way to spot a leak? Thanks for this video!!
Great video, thank you! I’m struggling with clearing tannins and went with a bag of purigen on the top of my 307 filter but now I see why it maybe isn’t working. To make room for the polyfill would you remove the carbon bags? Thank you 🙏🏻 still very new to all of this and your videos have been a great help
Hey, you are great at making these videos and being informative. Keep it up! One suggestion or pro tip for you though... skip the fluval ceramic discs and replace with all matrix. Your theory is good that the airation is good for growing the bac. However, inside the canister it is vacuum sealed and full of water so there is no air movement. Matrix has vastly superior s.a. so I think you would benefit from the added bac.
Grant Wolter thanks for those words, really appreciate it and the tips. I agree Matrix is much better but I like to just mix it up, maybe it’s a mental thing lol. Also agreed there is no air in the canister, but the water itself is oxygenated, so the course ceramic rings work well for aerobic bacteria. Love the feedback though...keep it coming! 👍
I ended up getting the Marineland 220 filter because it was on sale and I had a coupon to get 20% off but I pretty much arranged the trays like how you had it in this video and it's been working out for me but I mainly use this canister filter as a polishing unit. My two AquaClear 70 gallon filters on my tank only have bio media and sponges in them. With all three units my tank is looking very crystal clear
Great and well informed video man, I went and bought a 407 yesterday after watching this in depth video. I have a HOB filter and would like to put my HOB filters in the canister filter, I’m just not too sure where to put them so I can keep the beneficial bacteria cycling throughout. Any ideas or tips?
Hello kev. I have been watching your channel for a hot minute and thank you so much for the amazing content. You help make the hobby more enjoyable. My question is where to put polyfil in 07 series canister filter? I have seen 2 different videos of yours that suggest it in opposite parts of the filter. I currently have it in the top basket. Is this correct?
Thanks for this video you explained this so well for a newby to the game, great video and I'm looking forward in the future to upgrade to this canister, thanks again and keep the great info coming.
Great video man. I’m gonna add the seachem matrix 👍🐠. Been starting at the unopened box of the 407 for two weeks now with excitement and approach avoidance lol
Great channel. Question for ya.....I have the fluval 406 filter (predecessor to the 407) and want to give it a refresh in parts since I'm moving it to a different tank. Do you know if the 407 rim connectors will work for the older 406? I can't find the a replacement rim connectors specifically for the 406. If you have any input I'd love to hear. Thanks!!
Hey man, great channel !!! I set up my 407 like you showed in this video, was wondering, did you put one bag of purigen on each side? Or just one? I put one bag of charcoal on one side and one purigen on the other just because fluval sent so many figured I’d use em. And I did poly fill on top of both. How often do you advise cleaning the canister, and how often do you advise replacing poly fill?
How about the new pads? I don't need nitrate pads, I have live plants. I'm going to use charcoal and polishing pads. The biomass goes in the middle, right? I'm old school and need some info on how these new filters work. You have been a great help.
Got a fish that lays on the bottom, he moves once in a while, did a water change yesterday, put some absent salt in today, got some meds coming from Amazon, that i learned from u, what u think is wrong. Thanks bro.
first of all remove him, he could be stressed from being picked on, or it could be disease. Treat with something like general cure that covers a few things, but mostly see how he acts alone in quarantine...sometimes they just need to stop getting bullied.
10 would be better, but if its all you got you can work with it...better than him staying stressed where he is. Try petsmart, they sometimes have 10 gallons for $10 sales.
On my 55 gallon I am currently running 2 AquaClear HOB filters which seem to be doing a good job. I keep hearing about canister filters and debating if it would be worth the change or not. On my 37 gallon I put a submerged filter in with a rain fall arm and the fish seem to love it. The 37 only has a school of 20 neons, 3 guppy babies and a black molly baby. At the rate these guppy’s in the 55 are cranking out babies, I am wondering due to that tank getting overstocked if a canister filter would be right.
What’s up enjoy your Channel thx you with all your help on setting up my 55 gallon. But I have a ? Will I be able to put in bio home into my fluval 407 canister once again thx u for your Channel and your knowledge ...
Yes, no problem adding bio-home to your 407...but in my opinion, You'll be wasting a lot of money with that. Check this out as a better option for media - th-cam.com/video/WlKVa0qzjwg/w-d-xo.html
How do you stack your media, is there a better way? I'd like to know...Dont forget to Subscribe th-cam.com/channels/iEPmLfXBGeiHiCn4HVtS5w.html

My two AquaClear 70 gallon filters on my tank only have bio media and sponges in them. With all three units my tank is looking very crystal clear
Awesome! 💪
Great video really helped me with my setup. Thanks
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁

Glad to hear it! 😊💪
Hope all is good I have another ? How would I clean my new matrix in my sick or not ? Thx u once again with the great information u share 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Just rinse it off in tank water. You dont really need to clean bio-media much. Dont want to mess with it too much.
If you mean the media from your HOB, add them directly to the baskets in your 407. Just how they are placed in this video 😊
Great video my friend. Thank you for the amazing information!
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Great video.just picked a 407 up today for a pre ordered fish tank im getting next week.going to set filter up just like that.thanks for the info 👍

Great videos found them very helpful and informative thanks
Thanks, glad you found them helpful!
Superb video buddy thanks for the advice 👍

Hi Kevin I know this is a long video but can you show the intake on the 407 and how you feel about the ball in there that tends to get clogged up
Great video to learn about filtration
Thanks, glad you found it helpful 😊

@KaveManAquatics thanks msn best hobby in the world
Great channel. Thanks!!
Great information thx very much
My pleasure!
A great and informative video !!
Rahamim Davidov Thank you sir! 😊
How often do you advise cleaning the canister, and how often do you advise replacing poly fill?
thank you
Thanks for the info!!!! 😎👌🏼
How about the new pads? I don't need nitrate pads, I have live plants. I'm going to use charcoal and polishing pads. The biomass goes in the middle, right? I'm old school and need some info on how these new filters work. You have been a great help.
Great job. Keep info coming
O Doug Thanks, Will do!
Kave u great man, lam leaning alot from you, got some question for u
Thanks bro, whats up?
Got a fish that lays on the bottom, he moves once in a while, did a water change yesterday, put some absent salt in today, got some meds coming from Amazon, that i learned from u, what u think is wrong. Thanks bro.
first of all remove him, he could be stressed from being picked on, or it could be disease. Treat with something like general cure that covers a few things, but mostly see how he acts alone in quarantine...sometimes they just need to stop getting bullied.
@@KaveManAquatics all i got is a 5gal. Tank for him is that big enough, got general c, coming from Amazon.
10 would be better, but if its all you got you can work with it...better than him staying stressed where he is. Try petsmart, they sometimes have 10 gallons for $10 sales.
Hello Bud, very informative material I am glad to subscribe your channel
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for subscribing 😊
Love your videos man! So helpful.
Quick question. Do you only use one bag of Purigen or do you put one bag in each side of the tray?
Thanks Kev!
On this tank I only use 1 bag. It's good for up to 100 gallons. Glad you're enjoying the channel! 😊
Great video can you add floss on top of the ceramic rings too just coz it fits?
Sure, that will polish your water just a bit more 😁
Life saver ,thanks alot
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Only channel I listen to lol,thank u
Your doing great video. So this process will work for 307?
Thanks! Yes Sir!!
Awesome best tip well explained thanks..
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Got ya self a new sub bro
Awesome thank you!
@@KaveManAquatics thx u boss 👍🏽 keep up the great job man and thx u for the fast response....
Thanks Sinbad!
My pleasure!
