Good looking compost! I'll be starting a new pile fairly soon myself.

OneYardRevolution I always love your compost vids. Hands down my favorite garden activity is composting! Thanks for watching!

Hmm, rabbit balls. We have lots of wild rabbits leaving their droppings all over our yard. Perhaps I should try sweeping up the bigger piles and adding them to my compost. As it is, I just sweep the piles apart and leave them in the grass.

I like your vid. But I wasn't sure of everything you were putting on the pile. Could you please list the additions? Thanks.

Do you have a tip for controlling the flies?
My rabbit dropping filled compost attracts a lot of annoying flies regardless of how much I cover it with straw and dirt.
    Thanks for sharing,

How to Grow a Garden with Scarlett Damen There's not much you can do about flies. Especially if your composting manure. The best I've done is covering it heavily, like 3-4 inches, with mulch, straw, or leaves. I'm going to try a tarp over everything when I clean cages this weekend. I've also heard some things about adding blood meal, which seems to me like it would only serve to attract more flies, but I am researching further. If it proves to be a viable method though I will be sure to post about it. Thanks for watching!

THAT small pile you started does it get hot and steamy as you keep adding stuff and eventually gets large ??

Where can I get a compost helper as cute as yours? What did you put on top of the cardboard?

Bambi Tyree They broke the mold with that one. it was a weeks worth of rabbit manure followed by vegetable scraps and topped off with straw.

Your dog did you a favor. Pee is actually good for a compost pile :)

Question: Arent those grubs terrible for your plants? I have problems with grubs this year getting into the main vine of my squash and cucumbers and stuff and they would kill my plants like it was insane how fast my plants got eaten at the base by these things..... Why would you want those lil bastards in your compost?

Strangely down here the grubs never have been any kind of nuisance. Perhaps they're a different species, ive only ever found them in decomposing matter, never around living plants.

I agree with Edna, they are a horrible pest in the garden and in my flower bed's, I don't know what is attracting them in his compost, but I wouldn't use it. I am using a tumbler composter, and also I have an open one in the back yard, if I see a grub, that compost will not be used. Nicky from Michigan

The grubs inside you squash vines are Squash vine borers, they come from eggs laid on your plant by a reddish moth that looks more like a wasp. In general I wouldn't want most grubs in my garden though. I'd turn some chickens loose on that pile.

You starter pile... was that from a rabbit? Hahah. I have one and didn't think to use his scraps as compost! But is it safe to use for vegetable farming?

yes, as long as your using natural bedding (if youre using any) such as wood chips, news paper etc its excellent for compost. rabbit manure can actually be used inthe garden without composting because its low enough in nitrogen it wont burn the plants. However i still recommend composting it first.
