My ex-fatherinlaw was a guard at max security prison, and when they took over that prison, they took him and 2 other guards, put them in a cell, and put other convicts, to protect them, because they said in all the years you have been here, you treated us with respect, and decent, so nothing happened to them, but other guards were hurt really bad,my wife was crying of course, but her father told he was scared, but it payed off treating them with common respect and decency,

I love how the guy they’re interviewing talks about how ‘crafty’ and ‘knowledgeable in the ways of the street’ the inmates are. Completely playing down the STUNNING incompetence of the guards. Just, wow.
They made that clear in very beginning. Be fair!!

I burst out laughing at this lovely gem you dropped
Hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20, and I'm SURE that the guards wanted to convey "how smart" the inmates were, so that it made themselves appear to be much less idiotic.
They actually tricked the prison staff into providing a motor vehicle they could use in fleeing. This has to be the greatest escape of all time. Not only did the mastermind outsmart the entire engineering design of the place he also outsmarted the way it was operated. Unreal.

I'm absolutely STUNNED by how many "Breaches of Protocol" happened at this place!!! If inmates saw THIS many mistakes being CONSTANTLY made, then it was just a matter of time before there was an escape!!!
The prisoner's actions initiated the mistakes. The mistakes didn't exist before.
I was saying the same thing. So many security protocols were violated.
Yea US prisons like to adopt the 'learn from ur mistakes' systems back in the day. They create what they thought was a great prison but find out inmates have nothing but time to scheme, find weaknesses & CO vulnerabilities to use against the system. After escapes the prisons fix the weaknesses that were exploited previously and when building new prisons they use the past to form once again the new 'escape proof' prison, only to find someone else is actually smarter than they are.
Funny part is a tiny magnet from earbud headphones can open most of these electric prison doors....

US prisons can be decidedly redirective places. Scholastic no-hopers can end up mastering trigonometry and calculus. In those restrictive environments they innately go for focus, they seek out the project, however innocuous and incontingent it may initially be.
Kudos to the inmate who stopped the rape
they themselves raped other innocents.. so... idk
Yes, although I imagine that the inmate was probably motivated less by his conscience and more by the fact that an assault on the nurse (or murder of a guard) would have a major negative impact on his pending appeal.

I was born in and have lived in Richmond, Virginia all of my life. I, vividly, remember the "Briley Brothers" brutal killing spree...all three brothers were ruthless, deranged, cold hearted killers! I graduated from high school in June of 1978 and their reign of terror began in March of 1979. Our city did not sleep until they were arrested in Oct./Nov of 1979. During their 8 months of terror on our city they murdered 10 people...probably more but held responsible for 10. They showed no preference as they murdered men, women and children...young and old. The brothers made an 82 year old man watch as they took turns brutally raping his 79 year old wife and then they killed them both. They made a 5 year old child and his father watch as they took turns raping the 28 year old mother and wife who was 8 months pregnant and then they murdered the mother and father as the 5 year old watched and waited his turn. They raped and robbed a 23 year old woman as well as a 62 and 83 year old woman and her husband. They killed a well known and liked radio disc jockey as he took a smoke break outside one of our local bars. They did all this killing sometimes within days and weeks of each other. Two of the brothers received the death penalty and were executed by the electric chair one year apart and the third remains incarcerated to this day. The "Briley Brothers" forever changed our city and those of us that lived through it.
and yet... there were bunch of retards praying for them and lighting up candles!
I think things would have been better if when the police had originally arrested them they didn't take them to the precinct, but took them out somewhere and set them on fire.

I figured this was made in the 90s. (I was a child then) So this was the original first 48 huh.
Wow! This case and depiction had me enthralled from beginning to end! Well done! Btw, narrator’s voice is so soothing. I wish he could read me some bedtime stories. Lol!
FBI Files... he puts me to sleep every night lol
@@HeatherBoo916 same I watch these while laying down definitely help me sleep like a baby lol
Great documentary. Very well produced and filmed/executed. On top of it the narrator's haunting voice and story-telling.
I just love how the narrator tells this story...
Breaking out of jail IQ : 3000
Once out of jail IQ : 3
LMFAO right!
I thought that as well. It only worked getting out singe they got the help of many people together. Seems that the more people the better the plan goes
being back in normal civilization shocked them
.. and back in jail IQ 3000 + 3 - 3003
Just outnumbered. They needed money and resources. Too many variables to plan once out. Plus the FBI got involved so they never had a chance. Most people can't outsmart the FBI. They have every resource available. Resources we don't even know about. Of course they'll always win. Maybe a true genius who worked for them could. He'd need unlimited funds and extreme hacking skills. Still a hacker that can trace them tho. Pointless
Fantastic documentary!! A must see and very informative. Thank you for posting!
My brother is an inmate. He says it's easy to be a big fish in a small pond but not easy to be a small fish in a big pond. Meaning he had cred and a reputation in prison but in the real world he's no one. Sadly I doubt he will ever change.
Blindfolding lieutenant with his glasses on is something on another level 😂😂
It is the worst crime I have ever seen, maybe in history. Truly a great tragedy. RIP glasses.
Your comment took me out ....😂🤣🤣😭
This narrators voice is so good for these documentaries hahahahaha

He narrates other crime documentaries/shows....like The FBI Files.

The inmates were pretty clever, and the prison system seriously lacked security protocols. One thing they could’ve done is set up codes to use in conversations with other corrections officers to let them know that they were being held hostage.
No, the officer's didn't follow protocols
Image being so bad at your job that the detective thought you let the prisoners out on purpose

I watch them while I clean my guns.
They are. Sometimes I forget what brought me to TH-cam
Absolutely right! 👍
Those 6 knew what time it was,Don't ever underestimate a Con,Most are way smarter than you think...
It's actually sad that they were so institutionalised that they didn't know how to cope on the outside. They had to be very intelligent to come up with a plan like that. I can respect them for not hurting the staff and for not resisting arrest. Not many have escaped death row.
By the main guy staying behind, they executed a crafty plan to then just run like chickens with their heads cut off. Had the man chosen to flee along with them, he could've made it, while the gang distracted the police in a wild goose chase
People get out and realised that the world changed, they need to pay rent, and don't get their 3 meals a day.
This is why we Americans won't give up our guns. Things like Death Row inmates escaping into the local area never happen........until they do.
Raping a nurse is pretty low though...
Escaping might be “easy” but the afterwards it’s the difficult part, where can you go without clothes? Food?money? No family or friends who can help you ? You are practically doomed no wonder they all get caught at some point
Thank you for the upload RS.
Watching from NSW Australia.
Considering the guards did nothing that they were supposed to, they need to be the ones held responsible for this whole mess. They broke every safety measure put in to place. They are all responsible.
Facebook brought me here am so happy.i love these documentaries
Imagine sitting in a room counting minutes to your death. freedom is priceless.
Yep but shoulda thought about that BEFORE they committed the crime.
Another man Dennis Stockton (16:45) was executed on September 27, 1995. He kept detailed information of the escape in his journals. Stockton was supposed to join the others but he backed out
I was wondering why they havnet mentioned him to much but yea them boys deserved all of that execution❗❗❗❗❗them crimes was way to awful
Mistake 1 they stayed together 🤦🏽♀️
Mistake 2 no sense of direction
Mistake 3 Plan dumb 😩😭
Mistake 4 escaped with snitches 🤦🏽♀️
lol
4 was #1
Can't lie that was good how they managed to get control of an entire block and trick the whole facility shows how smart and intelligent inmates can be. They got caught because they did not think this through
I would watch that movie, if it is ever made!
This is an exiting and lesson filled story!
Èvery one needs a wake up call....

On such low wages its no wonder the guards screwed up
You're right. No one is going to confront a man with nothing to lose for 15/hr
@Heather Sprague it always comes down to risk vs reward.
@@SitPls No guard is going to give his life trying to stop an escape of that magnitude for any amount of money. Especially unarmed.
@@SitPls This was the early 80's...those guards WISH they were making 15 an hour, haha.
@@Scorch428 and why should they go above and beyond...its not like the military or police force where bravery is often met with high praise with a high raise.
Excellent plan however, they didn't think through their exact plan once they outside..
The mastermind remained inside and see if his appeal would work, it didn't but he dodged the electric chair execution. I think he just wanted to know if his plan would work, or just wanted some glory for himself that he outwitted an entire system just like the Pizza bomber incident. That gun he made before the execution and note "Smile" is a message. Though nobody knows what it really meant.
Exactly
Outside is another world for them...
Well, they could only see eithin the prison walls
I wouldn't be going back, if it was me that's for damn sure, I know that at least.
The fact I went to sleep watching this and had the wildest dream like I was there with them 😂😂😂
Me too lol
Willie Turner HAD an appeal pending..... staying behind to guard the hostages probably didn't win him any points in the appeals process. Despite a well thought out escape plan, you have to wonder about the intelligence of some of these guys.
That part did make me laugh, its like as if you're getting let off now buddy
He’s just shaking his head yup like he helped himself 😂 I wouldn’t be staying behind
Willie Turner did not have much formal education, having grown up in great poverty in Tidewater, Virginia. However, he did develop very unique gifts while incarcerated. Turner could fashion a dummy key for his cell lock just by hearing how the lock turned with a key inserted in it. He also designed and *patented* a new type of scissor blade called a "de-ending shear", doing all the technical drawings using what materials he had available on death row.
The patent number is 4,428,119 issued on January 31, 1984.
Turner also made a flare gun using a match and the cardboard backing of a yellow legal notepad in an abortive 1986 escape attempt.
I suspect he didn't want to go with the Brileys escape when he determined they were likely to engage in more bloodshed once they got outside the prison walls.
you have to give them credit, this is a really smart plan...
Thao Brewster no the stealing of the clothes and how detailed it was
@Thao Brewster the break out plan was brilliant, considering 1980s policies, practices and technology. The post break out plan was not well thought out, but communications options (cell phones , internet) didn't exist then, so the getaway understandably not complex. Also, keep in mind that these cons were fully vetted regarding friends, associates, family, etc so usual sources of assistance were not viable and as a death row break out there was national coverage making it hard to hide.
Yep. BUT, Sure am glad they epicly _failed_ at staying out on the run!!
@@Digitalhunny stop being politically correct. Deep down you were hoping they'd make it to Canada. And, it's OK. The drive for freedom is almost always makes a compelling story, regardless of who is trying to gain freedom.
@@youknowmysteelo You _must_ be spending too much time alone, reading TH-cam comment sections. DUDE, do you watch the national news?? I have SEEN 'WHAT' the FBI can and WILL do,today. Embarrassing. The FBI has become an institution that smart folks are better to avoid becoming 'interesting' to them. The corruption in the ranks is as bad as can get.

Ironic that these men escaped from prison, fearing an upcoming acceleration and onslaught of executions..
Yet an onslaught of executions began *because* of their escape.
The executions happened because America is not part of the civilized world.
