How All Ghillied Up Changed Call of Duty Forever - Art of the Level

- Here's how the All Ghillied Up mission changed Call of Duty forever. Developer Infinity Ward changed first-person shooters when it launched Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007. Set on the frontlines of a politically murky war, its adrenaline-fueled action set pieces redefined campaign design for an entire generation. But while levels like Crew Expendable and Charlie Don’t Surf channelled the trademark intensity of Call of Duty’s World War 2 days, one mission set the series’ rulebook ablaze and threw it out of the window. It was called All Ghillied Up.
To find out how All Ghillied Up was put together IGN spoke to designer Mohammad Alavi, who created the mission alongside colleagues at Infinity Ward. With his insight, we examine how All Ghillied Up makes use of custom artificial intelligence, combat puzzles, and tense scripted sequences to create a heart-stopping mission behind enemy lines.

This mission will forever and always be the most iconic mission in COD. Period.
This mission and the Airport mission are the two most iconic missions.
@@AXP1303followed by clean house
And the house raid in cod mw2 (newest)
@@snippidippithat was from the first modern warfare remake
Nope, you forgot one. Remember, No Russian.
This whole campaign was a masterclass in how to control mood and tension. Hell, the opening mission puts you in the shoes of a man on his way to being publicly executed. They could've told you that that was the event that kicked off the conflict in the story, but they _showed_ you instead. _All Ghillied Up_ was just the highlight in a stellar campaign full of memorable moments.
Best COD mission ever
Yes
Remember, no Russian
No Russian
More of a dust to dust kind of guy
Yes
I’ll argue not just the best COD mission ever, but prob the best FPS campaign mission ever. The fact that all these yrs later this is still reviewed and looked back on like this is testament.
CoD4 is still my favorite campaign out of all of them
Modern Warfare 2’s my fav. Although 4 is amazing!
Same. 07 was the best. My first time playing online to which was insane to me.
Agree 💯
Facts
Nothing will beat the original imo because it's actually based off real life but CoD4 and BO1 are def 2nd and 3rd place for me
These videos about COD campaigns and missions with actual dev inside information are something we needed for years. I'd love to see more of these types of videos in the future
"Metal Gear vibe...."
Imagine creating such an industrial vibe that your game is still mentioned today to define a whole genre.
Imagine its done by an equally industry standard setting game more than almost two decades since it first released.
Thats crazy respect.
Is metal gear really technical?
Was definitely my favorite mission back then.
Imagine being the creator of such an iconic level
Not just in COD but the industry itself. All Ghillied Up is a masterpiece of a videogame level and it stands as to what videogames should strive to look and feel like.
To think that this mission almost didn’t end up in the game and thanks to a young designer who made it and showed the senior devs, who loved it so much they added it last minute, makes this even more badass
A big thanks to this guy and his team for creating a memory that we will never forget 🎉❤
Miss these days where Call of Duty actually felt like real military instead of some action movie with super soldiers lol
Thanks again... it was a pleasure to talk to you :)
You a G, sir.
Why didnt they promoted this guy to be director for MW games? He had the right mentality to make great COD missions.
Back when game developers cared about their work and took pride in their designs
lol
@@1337SoTTicKWhat's so funny, chum?
Epic and ground breaking at the time. Great memories playing COD4 for the first time. Holiday 2007...💪🏼
*Modern Warfare is what made me a fan of COD*
Same
Same here.
Vince Zampella, Jason West and all of those guys were amazing, and could see the industry that NO other development team nor publisher has been able to do when it comes to FPS ever since.
The halo killer ❤
There is a new untitled game in development by steve fukuda from respawn entertainment
@@maverick4668 Did he create his own studio?
@@awkc63 jasen west and zince zampella is the founder of respawn entertainment...he also worked there...steve fukuda is the director of titanfall games..respawn entertainment is owned by EA but the dev team is basically ex-infinity ward employees
Out of all the COD missions it remains my favourite including it leading into One Shot, One Kill that mission is crazy on Veteran.
For those watching with subtitles, this level was not, in fact, made by a larva or any kind of juvenile insect.
What a legend! So inspiring to see a normal person create something so iconic. This mission inspired me to visit Pripyat and Chernobyl in 2014, a month before the Russian invasion.
Greatest mission of all time in COD
1. All ghillied up
2. The sniper mission in World at War
just so you know you mean vendetta
The atmosphere is what stays with you forever , it's just so different from the rest of the game
That mission was artistic and technological masterpiece. Whole game was indeed, all the way to promod matches but that mission was just holding your breath every second of it.
Those quiet inside moments in the abandoned building near the end of the mission are formative and iconic for me. Its so eerie and atmospheric, enemies wouldve ruined it. Crazy to learn there was supposed to be a fight there.
Finally got this for Christmas that year. Didn’t leave my room all day. The pure freshness and atmosphere of that game starting with the very first mission will never be replicated. Nostalgia is strong with this one. Not to mention the multiplayer which changed online gaming forever after halo had already established the fps genre
Back when Call of Duty was worth its price in just its single player campaign alone.
The attention to detail and the whole setup of the environment coupled with the level design in this and DFO mission is still untouchable till this day!🙌🌟
They should have made an entire Modern Warfare game based around being the sniper.
Arguably the GOAT of Call Of Duty missions
The background of this mission still gives me chills
That part with the tanks and infantry passing by you reminded me to "Behind enemy lines" movie.
Too bad this series was the top of their game. MWII got close but this was the height of story, game play and series development.
Mohammad Alavi? All thanks to u Sir!
This mission reminds me a movie quote "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" The art of Hunting..
Completing this mission on veteran is still one of the hardest things I’ve ever done
THE BEST EVER initiation to FPS games for me
In terms of highly controlled or "scripted" action experiences CoD4 might be the GOAT.
It's not necessarily what games does best... But CoD4 is probably the game that does it best.
This mission and the AC130 mission from COD 4 will always be my most memorable time in the entire franchise.
Best call of duty game ever. Everything was simply with always with action and not having half of the team camping like this new cod games.
Bring this back to make the cod missions, idk what happened in the cod mw3 this year
Before 07 and CoD4, everything was WW2 based. After CoD4, everything changed. And kit couldn't have gone better...until recently
The talented people that made the modern warfare series left to create the Respawn studio and develop TitanFall, you should check this game instead of new CoDs.
Aha the talented people left to create another great game called Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends
If you want more of this mission, go play any Splint Cell game.
Gotta say this & the DFA level are iconic!
The most iconic mission in COD and it will ever be❤
They should really remake this for the current timeline, it’s all canon so possible. Would love to see what it would look like made with mocap and the current graphics
Such a great video. Would love to see many more of these about other missions and also multiplayer maps!
Also from the military perspective, that is accurate. If your comoflage is on point a Ghillie suit is an incredible piece of equipment and you could lie completely still and enemy soldiers will walk past you and not even know you were there.
For example during Operation Barras conducted by 22nd SAS and The Parachute Regiment a two man SAS reconnaissance team crawled to within 10 meters of the enemy camp undetected and lay there for over two days and they were not in Ghillie suits. When the shooting started they left their positions and began engaging the enemy along with their comrades.
Feels like there's a retrospective on this mission every other year.
This in veteran was the worst but the best.
The Og Modern Warfare series is the most thrilling fps out there. And this mission particularly is the best one within that!
And they went from this to pink weapons, rabbit operators and ruined coop mode in mw2...they went to the top to rock bottom in 10 years
this legendary mission is the best mission in all call of duty series
The best mission in any single player FPS, ever.
All ghillied up and Black cat are the best campaign in COD.
Cool to see one of the people behind the game.
dang, what id do for more cod like this
Honestly loving these kinds of videos you guys have been doing.
Well done that man for sticking to his idea
Greatest mission in cod history!
Nice to see people using the No Clip archive
The best CoD ever. MP and SP. So sad to see what the game is now
Never thought an Iranian made one of the best gaming missions
He's american lol. Ancestry dont matter
Next best (tactical) mission was the house clearing in MW3 (obv. Everyone loves the airport no russian.)
#1) Crew Expendable
#2) Mile High Club
#3) All Ghillied Up
#4) No Russian
#5) Titanfall 2 Campaign.
This is why Splinter Cell was a hit
Playing Spec Ops mode of All Ghillied Up was the best
Halo CE: 343 guilty spark for the next art of the level episode
Or silent cartographer
Guilty spark is garbage, silet cartagrapher or assault on the control room is what we need
Ahh 😊 when cod was a war game. Now its something to do with rappers and stuff with silly outfits and pinks guns
Brought back some solid memories thank you
Need to see more videos like this
Bravo to these developers! Loved playing this as a kid
Bring this type of Call of Duty back please. 😢
ANYTHING original MW trilogy
Me: 3:53
Muhammad, você criou uma obra de arte. Marcou para sempre mimha vida. Obrigado 🙏
It wasn’t the best COD mission but it definitely was in the top 5 of all time. But GD… the hardest setting on One Shot, One Kill was practically impossible to beat.
Modern warfare remastered, now there's a game and a way of life 👍
Yeah sadly those days of design are over
It wasn’t the best COD mission ever, but it definitely was in the top 5, if not top 3, of all time. But GD… the hardest setting on One Shot, One Kill was practically impossible to beat.
This and Gulag are my two most favourite
“All Ghillied Up” CRAWLED so that “Recon By Fire” could walk.
Still remember this one to this day
Activision/ Infinity Ward really messed up lettining this dude and half his team walk. you can tell how much soul and artistry is missing from future IW cods.
11:57 and he ended up making the best mission ever
and then this year's COD completely kills the campaign
The best and the one on the ship is iconic as well!
This man needs a star on the walk of fame
You were playing as price without a mustache
Basically their technical limitations made sure they didn't over do it and kept it just right.
back when COD was at its goddamn peak
They need to remake this mission
This is how you win war zone if your team can't stay alive.
He’s my hero
My favorite mission ever made
Mw3 campaign was such a disservice to the MW legacy
the best cod
How many times does he say "like"??
Fun fact, the young Price you meet in the older games is actually John Price's grandfather.
