Oh gee, this is a great video to identify the source of the problem. Tiny piece of shim resolved my basement duct noise, it helped to balanced weight of duct, that stopped the duct noise. Without your tip and this video. I was on wrong direction to solve this noise problem. May Allah help you to be successful in this life and in the hereafter Ameen.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It reinforced my suspicions. It's such an odd thing to have a ticking sound in the duct work. I would love to see a macro close up video showing the movement of the metal causing the noise. If I am able to capture it, I'll post a video. Thanks again!
Thanks for your video! I just moved into a house that has the exact same problem, thank got the basement isn't finished, so I'm gonna solve this before finishing the basement. And, as a precaution, I'm thinking of using drop-off ceiling as opposed to drywall ceiling.
Thank you for the video; I had this going through my bedroom wall, and was driving be crazy. Fixed it immediately after watching your video, and slept like a baby :)
For lesson 2, another thing to keep in mind is the patch work you'll need to do to cover up the cut dry wall. On the side where you have the cables, you have plenty of dry wall to screw in small wooden blocks that will support your dry wall patch. However, on the opposite side, you cut the dry wall very close to the stud and have no room to screw in a support for your dry wall patch. For example, at 14:30 I would've cut the drywall an additional inch or two to the right of where you made your cut.
GOD BLESS YOU!! Haha but seriously this EXACT popping duct noise has been driving me crazy for the past year in our old home it used to never make those popping sounds (been living here for 4 years now) and my wife says she never hears it but it drives me crazy!! We also got our windows replaced from wallside windows about right when it started happening and I was thinking this whole time is because of their poor quality windows affecting the structure of our house or something since we never had that problem… and I FINALLY found someone who has been through the exact same problem.. I don’t think you know how much this video has peaced out my mind🤣 God Bless!!
I’ve had same issue! It was all hanger brackets holding ducts up all! I placed silver tape wedges on all 4 corners blocking the hangers from coming into contact with duct! Hangers that were to tightly wrapped around duct constantly ticked
I have unfinished basement and I can see all the ducts but unable to figure out from where the noise coming. I dont see anything shaking or any noise form ducts there. I hear noise is from inside the furnace when it is turned off. I hear some ticking or banging noise from inside the furnace and probably I am hearing the same in upstairs bedroom.
At. 8:59, I noticed you don't have screws on the s cleat. Shoot a self tapping screw in the center, and at the ends of the s cleat, you can screw the ends of the drive cleat onto the s cleat. Try using acrylic latex duct sealant. Using a 2 inch brush, push the sealant into the s cleat and drive cleat joints. Also works on supply or return boots, just push the sealant into the joints. Also try screwing on a full joint of s cleat onto the square duct, to stiffen the duct.
Thanks a lot for the comments, I didn’t realize there should be screws on s cleat. Lesson learned. The challenge for finished basement is to figure out where the issue is. This s cleat is what it was when the house was built, not sure were missed at that time.
I'm wondering the duct inside the opened drywall is return or supply? The return duct in my house is square and supply duct is round. So the noise we can hear from the duct boot can be caused from return duct?I always thought it is supply duct problem.
It would be extremely unusual to have noise occurring in a return duct. The main cause of duct noise is thermal (heat) expansion and contraction - which shouldn’t occur in return ducts since the temperature change in a return duct should be minimal. BTW, supply ducts can be rectangular as well as round.

thank you for taking the time and effort to post this video! this is immensely hopeful

Buddy, good to know that it helps a bit. You are not alone😅 My wife told me she was not hearing it at all!😓 Have a good one!

I think you have reachable hanger and unfinished basement, right?
Thank you!! I have same problem too and will try this!

That’s what I’m having at my house too! Keep me updated if possible please and thank you!

We have flex duct in our house, but we still have a very loud popping noise. Any recommendations what else could be the causing the noise?
Folks, don't use a circular saw to cut holes in your drywall. Use a drywall saw.
I would agree with you.
This video was helpful!

Mine is supply duct. As Tommy mentioned supply duct might have the most temperature change to cause noise. My return duct seems quite.
You are the man
Thank you for sharing
Just bought a house and this exact thing is happening dwn stairs in my wall when the heat stops.
Thank you so much.
Mastic, if accessible nickel thick, or aero seal your ducts, fills the gaps and seams.
Thanks for the comments. Good idea 💡
thx
Solved problem
我的公寓也有这样的问题,th-cam.com/users/shortsn6ed3IGGPdc , 能问问怎么解决吗?
No had to cut drywall down in basement
👍🏽
This dude rambles too much
I know it is a little too much. Good thing is I found a rusted hole in my duct. Bad thing is I got two drywall holes to fix up.
