Roger Houck is a stone mason in upstate NY with 20+ years experience in the industry. With many more years of experience learning while working with his father (Bill) who is a former NYS Forest Ranger and Stone Mason himself.
Roger takes us through the process of properly flashing a chimney so you can apply cultured stone, granite veneer, or other types of stone and have a great looking result.

Roger, chiming in here as well....more great stuff from you, keep them coming. As far as aspect of masonry question: for us fearless DIY'ers, mixing mortar for different application(Crowns vs. refacing a chimney vs. Laying a patio/mix if done at different times of the year to deal with temps/mixes if living in different parts of the states (NE vs. MD vs Southern...etc). Hearing about these various scenarios would be gold to us. Thanks in advance.

Damn man your videos are awesome! You have such a high level of knowledge and your videos are straight to the point but you deliver information really well so its still fun to watch. Your channel should be massive one day if you are able to stick with posting videos! There is a channel you might like from a guy that is in the skill trades as well, RR Buildings, you could maybe emulate some of his video shooting/editing techniques - because he has gotten his channel to blow up, and I feel like with your knowledge level you could totally have a crazy popular and profitable channel.
THANK YOU for the encouragement Samuel, I will definitely check out rr as well. i am trying to grow this channel but i have had a herd time carving out the time to get it all together. i have about 12 more how to vids recorded including a crazy outdoor kitchen project pizza oven etc. but i just got to clear some time. we have another channel on fishing th-cam.com/users/RogersRigs. over there i have a vid of filleting a perch in my long john's and it got over o million views! but i haven't been able to duplicate that since. Anyway thanks for the encouragement. I'm gonna go edit a vid now!
@@TheHowToHeadquarters man I hope you can grow your channel too because so many people would benefit from your knowledge!! I've been doing tons of house remodel work the past couple years which has caused me to watch a boat load of informative construction videos on youtube, and your skills/knowledge/delivery are right up there with the best creators I've come across! I'm sure its probably a pretty big challenge to find time to edit/post the videos while also doing your construction work... Maybe you could reach out to some of the other youtube creators and see if you could do a cross promotion with them (RR buildings, Landberg Tile, Matt Risinger, Sal Diblasio, The Tile Coach ect..) I know that kind of exposure on other channels can really help grow audience.... Regardless man I'm a big fan of the work you do and the videos that I've seen so far, so hopefully you keep creating and the audience arrives!

I added my email cause I'd could honestly shoot you a pretty good sized list of masonry videos I'd like to see if that would be helpful! I'm a total noob/DIYer so I think I would have pretty common questions that people would be searching for. Hopefully that first initial comment with the ideas and my contact info did make it to you but if not just let me know!

In the 80's, we used regular 2x6's, or 2x8's in NC as a buildout.
YEP that is what we used too. but i like the adventec now because it does not want to warp and it does not rot too easily. Thanks for watching Norm!
@@TheHowToHeadquarters We used a black goo, on the wood, mixed in the gallon paint can. Every once in a while, we tore out old work, I ever saw any of it even slightly damp. I'm doubt it would ever get wet, that goo was nasty.
I bet its illegal black goo now! :-) everything that really worked is no longer made. did you use the goo as the flashing too or just to protect the wood and then metal over top of it?

Great Video! Question here: if both the chimney and the roof are new construction, how would step flashing for your shingles interact with the chimney flashing? Would you install the chimney flashing first, then install your roof shingles and slide the step flashing under the copper chimney flashing - or - do you install your roof shingles/step flashing first… and if the second option is the case, does the step flashing against the vertical chimney portion go over or under that “subfloor” buildout for the chimney flashing? Thanks!
great question! in many cases the step flashing is already installed against the bricks and i build right over it with my "subfloor builldout" years down the road when they roof it again the roofer's step flashing will be installed behind my built out metal counter flashing. (they would never be able to get back to the brick layer at that point) It is water tight either way. but usually the timing of the roofers is not the same as the masons and with this method, it does not have to be.
Why not just use existing flashing??

Similar..just a 2x6 covered in colored steel..the board ur using is definitely a notch above our cheap fir..we also get alot of snow here so battling the same elements..i also like the caulk youve chosen..good stuff
