The nightmare of the Acolyte season one is over. As is the destruction of Star Wars by people who neither understand nor wanted to understand it. Leslye Headland has brought to this universe her interpretation which boils down to - Jedi bad, Sith Hot.
Welcome to Star Wars according to post-modernism.

Same, I saw the original in Chicago in 1977. Lines around the block, a cultural phenomenon. Same for the two sequels in the early 80s. I remember being super-excited for the sequels.
Fast forward to 1999 and the prequels were okay though they look like high art compared to the current franchise killing movies and series. Rogue One was good but all the rest has been terrible.
And what is worse, the most recent failures look like Disney is destroying this (and other franchises) on purpose. You can't flip a coin ten times and win without cheating. By the same token, you can't flip and lose ten times without something being rigged. It is difficult to be this bad for this many movies and series and never learn or make adjustments. I can't help but think they are destroying their franchise gold on purpose. Maybe it is dogmatic adherence to the Message, maybe it's something else but Disney's current "leadership" is a plague on franchises and Ip that used to be gold.

I'm not a big Star Wars guy. But I am a writer. This show COULD'VE been so much better if besides May and Osha, we had Jecki Lon or another Jedi as a protagonist.
They did the "one sister is Sith, one is Jedi". But they didn't write any training. We did not see either's beliefs being shaped. Its all posited on the back on one bullshit flashback about who started a fire and who actually killed the parents / witches.
      Idiotic.
Instead, we watch Jecki Lon and one sister be friends and train together under Sol. And then we have the other sister and Sexy Jedi already together.
At the end, Sith girl kills Jecki and Jedi girl realises that is her twin sister whom she thought was dead. NOW there's real conflict: Jedi sister realises her mentor Sol kinda lied and stole away her childhood. On the other hand, her Sith sister just killed her best friend. Its upto Jedi girl: Either have the Rashomon effect, and have HER relate what she remembers from the day the Jedi visited the coven, and have the two sisters fight it out. OR you have Jedi sister agree with her sister's POV and both girls fight Sol and he lets them end him or he defeats them both but refuses to kill either.
Simple. I know it is LITERALLY the same story as Luke (pick your family or the greater good) and Obi Wan (you just killed my best friend, what do you expect me to do now?)

The "not about good and evil" line invites a comparison with Potentium, a philosophy that came up in Legends. Potentium can be summed up as "There is no Light or Dark, there is only the Force," essentially stating that actions should only be considered moral if they work to bring and maintain balance in the Force. It was understandably suppressed by the Jedi as its followers extensively fell to the Dark Side due to the fostering of Templar-style "for the greater good" rationalization.

You have the philosophy of the Jedi right. They strive to be Vulcan-like (to mix my series). That philosophy lacks an awareness of the power of emotion. Emotions put someone in motion. Repressing emotions is a fruitless task. But using the energy of emotions with mindful intention, channeling that energy into what will be fruitful and not destructive; that would be the integrative (balancing) way. Indeed, what motivates the Jedi to act against dark-side users? Fear of what destruction and oppression they might wreak, anger at their indifference to the suffering of those they oppress and joy in the vision of a good world that they seek to have. The downfall of the Jedi in the Prequels is what they became: soulless bureaucrats mindlessly pushing rules without heart and without intention, merely doing what has always been done rather than seeing the growing threat and acting with full-hearted mindful intention.

As a prosocial psychopath (not Hollywood version), I live with absent or muted emotions. You don't need them to function. You do need priorities and some kind of motivation.
You don't need the energy of emotions, but only to choose and act. In absence of emotion, you need a code to guide actions.
But "emotional" people do evil as easily as logic based people, they just don't think about why they do it.
It is a bit like living as a Vulcan. It's not terrible once you get past the myth that you need emotions, but emotional people push that myth hard.

Historically what differs between jedis and siths is that the first one are seeking for the balance in the force. They fondamentaly believes they are the spectators of the events and need to intervene when there is an umbalance. It is why they are trained since their earliest age it is because someone with emotions can t stay neutral so they must not have any emotional attachement. Like with Anakin the decision was really criticize to have him as an apprentice because his age was too advanced so he already developed deep relations with his mother (first reason why he shifted to the dark side when she died)
In comparison, the siths reinforce though the umbalance in the force. They firmly believe that power was given to them to use it. They endorse the use of emotion like rage and anger in order to develop theirs potentials. That s the reason why they can use power like lightning or strangulation it is because theses powers need the use of bad emotions so the jedis are totally incapable in normal circonstance to use them.
To resume, jedis are diplomats and protectors, only intervene when there is a massacre else all is regulated though diplomatic ways. Siths are dictators, killers and murderers so yes there is a good and bad in Star Wars.

Understanding one's mortality and detaching oneself from the wants of desire feels like Buddhist teachings.

considering that Lucas borrowed quite a bit from asian popculture and mythology when creating the OG Star Wars, yes the comparison is quite apt

Goddamn, this quote "The Acolyte is not just a mediocre show, mediocre is being a generous term, it's a supercilious display of the new guard basking in its take over of a once much loved franchise reveling it the effective destruction of the work of others. it's a victory lap of how evil has successfully overthrown good, and snuffed out the last remnants of the rebellion." What a well written line that is both epic and 1000% true. Incredibly well put. Kudos Baggage Claim.

    Great video!
Disney has completely forgotten the first rule of entertainment which is to entertain first.
They’re media only exists as vehicles for “the message” and entertainment has gone out the window.
I wish I could say that there’s no way The Acolyte will get a season 2 but if they cancel the show that would prove the so called “sexist” “racist” “bigots” right and they won’t allow that to happen.

I have a feeling that lots of "wood polishing" happened in that cave with Plagueis watching in the distance.

Wow , you hit it out of the ballpark with this video. A different style with different editing to go with your writing. Your writing has always been well-crafted but this time, it's executed in a slightly different genre. Definitely a great promo for Invideo AI if you used it. It just complements your original content.
really nice video and explanation of the concepts.

This is an amazing video. I feel like you have given me a glasses that allow me to see the world through the post-modern and understand why they are doing what they are doing. Everyone thinks what they are doing is right, and I try to understand those perspectives. So thank you!

Hahaha. If that wasn't meant as an innuendo...Ok, it was. I just got to the throbbing blade.

Great take! I thought it was a little too late to be bashing on that trash as all angles of that trash has been analyzed already. But I love the take on post modernism. These people are nuts!!
Deep philosophy is always good food for the thoughts 😋

Whoever the writer of the Acolyte is, wants to have the audience's sympathy for a tragic hero, has the absolute freedom and full reign of a villain protagonist, people cheering for them like an exemplary hero all while having the morality of Jack Horner while having as much grace as HBO Velma.
