  • Hi! I recently graduated from UX bootcamp and I created my first UX design portfolio. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I do know how overwhelming it can be to create your first UX portfolio from scratch, so I wanted to share some tips and advice for any other UX designers in the same boat.
In this video, I share some information about useful sections to include, how to structure your case studies and some general tips about the visual presentation of your first portfolio as a new UX designer. I also show you what my own portfolio is looking like so far (it's a work in progress!)
Have any questions or feedback for me? I'd really like to hear! Drop me a comment below.

Excellent start for a recent graduate! A few other tips if I may, Tanya, don't be afraid of presenting your workings. By that I mean sketches, whiteboards, paper prototypes etc. If you become more advanced and start running your own workshops or sessions with your development teams, capturing the exercises and the methodologies you use in them is great way to show your full gamut of skills.
It's always worth remembering that the UI, even though very presentable, is the least important thing on your resume. Any User Experience Designer worth their salt should be all about the process. Thats what the top companies will be looking at, your thinking and how you approach a problem, that is the asset they want.
Another thing, if you are a keen on getting into UX, you DON'T need to be good at UI Design. Its a bonus for sure but there are a few areas you can excel in on there own. You can choose to become a UX Researcher, or maybe you just want to be the designer that works on the problem in the team and whom works alongside a dedicated researcher and a dedicated UI designer. You don't have to be great at everything.
And one last tip, it may seem silly to say but this role is all about people. Not just your users, but your stakeholders, your development team, your project managers, your marketing department and your sales team. Get to know these people as well as you can so you can handle the multiple personalities and traits of each one. A UX Designer, 100% of the time is a facilitator and will use the people around them to garner insight about the products your are designing. This is powerful in managing expectations and keeping people in check so no one person dominates the conversations.

How do you land a role as a visual design specialist (dedicated UI designer as you mentioned)? I’m going through a program right now and I hate the research aspect of it.

Wow Anthony, thank you SO much for taking the time to write such thoughtful feedback on my video - I really appreciate it!
I think I'll definitely be documenting more of my design process in the future! I do actually have a ton of workings (sketches, stickies) for my largest project but I was a bit worried about overwhelming my reader haha. Might be useful to find an interesting way to present them in my case study, thank you!
And I absolutely LOVE your point about building relationships and understanding all stakeholders. I'm learning the value of this very quickly, especially coming out of a bootcamp where we're quite siloed on our own projects. It's a serious skill to build!
Thank you again for taking the time to share your insights with all of us :) it is so appreciated!!

If you don't mind me asking, does a UI designer need to be excellent at UX design as well? I'm a bit more of a visual person than the latter.

I've been doing UX for almost 15 years and for the first time I feel I need an online portfolio. With the rise in remote UX opportunities in the UK, it appears hiring mangers are raising the bar creating a competitive job market for us UXers. I think what you've done here is fantastic and thank you for helping others like myself, this is a great formula for storytelling. I would however recommend sharing some photos, sketches and prototypes. These are evidence of what you've accomplished and it proves you're not just saying you've done it. Amazing work Tanya.

I heard you mention that you usually leave teasers on the top and i will say that ive talked to a ton of diff professionals about portfolios and they prefer for the final, actual work to be on the top so they can see it right away.
BUT they do always say that they still love the process work and seeing it all. It's just if they're going through x amount of people, they dont want to waste more time scrolling and trying to find it if they could get the final prototype or whatever else it is right away.

This is a super helpful video! I'll be starting up my Associates this fall for graphic design, but I started taking one of Google's online certificate for UX design and so far, I've been really interested in that. I haven't learned anything yet about how to set up a portfolio. This is a video I'll be coming back to 😁
