I'm from Petoskey and I remember my dad talking about how he would just show up to random crime scenes out of nowhere. The one story I can recollect is that he showed up to car crash and asked the officers on the scene what was the problem and got arrested on the spot. It was honestly one of the funniest things and I always wondered what happened to him afterwards. Good work as usual and thanks for the coverage of our possibly drunk crimefighter.
Most of what is said in here wasn't fact checked. I'm from Ptown and have known Mark for 25 years. I lived next door to him when all of this went down. This is very poor "journalism" at its finest.
@TheNotOverShow yeah...Mark has NEVER owned brass knuckles. As far as "dark clothing at night"...well, he's always worn black, as have I...and my wife...and a ton of other people.
As someone who lived in Seattle at the time, let me assure you that the unmasking of Phoenix Jones was not the shocking event the local news made it out to be. People figured out who he was pretty early because he was frequently spotted getting in and out of his girlfriend's car. He had a reputation for hassling drunk people and was largely regarded as a nuisance by the bartenders and doormen in my neighborhood.
There's a guy near where I grew up who actually owns a batmobile and a bat suit, and he's known for roaming the street and not only taking pictures with people, but he actually has helped people in the past. Dudes a good guy, making kids smile and actually helping people instead of being a vigilante (He wears a highly detail Dark Knight era batsuit, those wondering)
Years ago I was on a national express coach that ran overnight to london (I didn't get there till like 5 or 6 am) At one point about 3am or so another passenger got on bus a guy dressed as Dark Knight batman, I honestly thought I was hallucinating because it was so werid, and the costume was really well made. Anyway turned out guy was going to a comic convention and was a solicitor (while asking if he dealth with injury claims from batman) but was a chilled guy, even bought a bottle of water and a sandwich to a homless person sleeping nearby the coach depot..
Hold up same here, just in Canada! He always show up at different cons in costume and in the Batmobile for years. It was pretty cool and looked great! He'd also try helping people out. Doppelgänger or another Batman??
Dude Pheonix Jones was friggen hilarious. MMA fighter turned super hero knocking out drunks in Seattle. Then getting introuble for bear maxing people lol.
I was friends with his wife, and kinda with him just by default. He began treating her like her abusive ex did, and she was out of there. He spiralled pretty hard after that.
I'm glad Spider Dan decided to stop and do not do what many other risk takers do... He is absolutely right. No matter how skilled you are at something, if you do it enough times eventually you will slip, fall, and die.
Hold on, I have to rant about something unimportant real quick: The idea of batman being a loner is a huge misconception. After Robin was created in 1940, comic sales almost doubled. Ever since then Batman has never NOT had a sidekick. And after the introduction of the Justice League in 1960 he has never NOT been apart of a super team with many of the Justice Leaguers frequently visiting him in his cave. He also created a second team that fit his agenda better called The Outsiders. It doesn't stop there in terms of team ups and relationships but I think that's enough. Batman is cool and a team player if a bit emotionally challenged with some dark external conflicts. Not a dark, loner character that pisses people off for the wrong reasons. He is such a big part of our zeitgeist to the point a man in real life is willing to go to jail trying to be him. So I feel compelled to clear this up. That's all, thanks for reading.
For real. Superman and Nightwing (the two nicest, hopeful dudes in the DC Canon) are his best friends. That says a lot about what canon Batman has developed into. After Jason Todd's death in the 80's, Batman went crazy from having a lack of a partner. Which was a huge factor in the upcoming story about him getting a new sidekick lol. The "I work alone" thing that was birthed from the Nolan movies didn't even work in that Narrative. Batman had an insane amount of help in those movies.
And there's also that Bruce Wayne is a well known businessman and philanthropist, both of which involve a high level of social interaction, so the idea that he would just shut all that off like a light switch when he puts the cowl on is a bit silly really.
I know it’s probably not real, but there was a 1000 ways to die clip years ago about an irl superhero, and he went up to a granny selling oranges and was like “STOP! DO YOU HAVE A PERMIT TO BE SELLING THIS CITRUS?!” And that quote has lived in my head for years and this video has revived that memory
I like how his Phoenix’s girlfriend has a very specific, well thought out, and organized goal as a superhero and his is just running around stopping crime lmao
Trying to stop crime all the time is not how to be a hero is there’s no crime on that day you just wasted your whole night when you could of just done some community service

Being a kid was thinking Pheonix Jones was the coolest thing, and that he was taking matters into his own hands and inspiring others to do the same Being an adult is realizing he was just an egomaniac looking for any reason to get into a fight. What a tool
I think the Petoskey Batmans goal was not to brat up crime. But to inspire hope and make the people feel safe. Remember you don't have to beat up crime to stop crime. There are other ways to br a hero.
Your 100% correct. I'm not a cop, I'm not looking to beat up or arrest anyone. If anything, I'd label myself as a protecter. That's it. Just keeping an eye on things and making sure people are safe
Yeah I don't understand the big deal about his case. It's just a dude who loves batman who's not harming anyone. At least he's trying to help others and make a difference in this world. The authorities going after him and trying to make it seem like he was dangerous, is absurd. There's so much evil walking among us. Disgusting child molesters, robbers and rapists. Dangerous people who mostly don't ever get caught or honed in on. Yet those police saw this innocent superhero buff as a threat to the public? I watched that portion of the video waiting for the big bad scary thing that Petoskey batman was going to do. And it never came.
The Petoskey Batman is a true example of what a real life superhero should be. Goofy to be sure, but through that he became a public advocate for communities pulling together to keep themselves safe. As a sidenote, I’m kinda surprised that Spider Dan wasn’t hired by more companies to climb their own buildings. Maybe they offered on the condition that he wore safety gear and he declined?
Extreme liability and image issue if he falls to his demise, as well as bad morale for the business. Imagine still having to go to work in that same building every day and looking at the exact spot Dan was no more every time and the image of it never leaves you.
I don't agree with his message of "fighting the Mets Lab down the street", personally that sounds like a masochistic situation of self-perpetuating pain/potential death.
Fellow Batman here. 8 year vet at the thing. I can confirm, it's better to pull your community together. Movies tend to glorify vigilantism but it, isn't really that... cool or fun in reality. They overlook the paranoia and physical toll it takes on someone. Talking from experience which I cannot legally go into too much detail over. We need more Batmen like him.
Technically, if the only criteria to be a criminal is to "break rules, disagree with police and interfering with them" then even Batman would be considered one as he lives by his own rules and always at odds with the police, the only reason why he's not behind bars is because they literally can't catch or detain him so they gave up and decided to work with him instead lmao.
Any superhero operating in the U.S would be a criminal as vigilantism is illegal there. They also often use excessive force and rarely respect international borders.
Interfering with police investigation is literally a crime on the books. Batman is a textbook vigilante, he beats and injures people and faces no consequences for it.
Well, that and Batman actually solved crimes and stopped criminals. He didn't just interfere in investigations or annoy the folks conducting them. The billions of dollars didn't hurt either. Fictional characters are often more noble and effective than their real-life counterparts.
it really is a nice place. only threat i ever felt was leaving papa lue's and running into a full grown man in dark clothing carrying brass knuckles who is clearly on the spectrum.

TRUE STORY: when Unbreakable the movie came out I was a junior in high school . I was so just lost and typical teenage bullshit. But I was obsessed with (at the time) SMALLVILLE , and anything superhero. So when Unbreakable came out I bought a long black jacket, wore a black hoody , black motorcycle hard knuckle gloves, and a black mini scarf to hide my face. I made my own weapons like bo staffs with a semi sharp point . And in the dead of winter... In Chicago... Would walk around "looking for trouble ". I'm not crazy just was lonely and bored. Lol needless to say I stopped like after 2x. Oh n I'm 5'5, 120lbs so yeah... Who yah gonna call... NOT ME! The point I was also trying to make but neglected to really get to was that for some reason that movie Unbreakable at that time in my life gave me some sort of hope that maybe if I was there to just help one person who couldn't help themselves than it gave my mondaine, boring life some meaning. Much like Bruce Willi's characted David Dunn. I dunno just want to say thank you to all of you who commented and didn't make fun of me, but instead restored my faith in humanity again. Stay safe everyone...
Th size of the hero doesn't matter what matters is that instead of channeling that loneliness and boredness into negativity you were going out there to do what most law enforcement can't or flat out refuse to do you could chalk it up to just "wanting to cause trouble" but sometimes we have to do what most deem "weird" or "unnecessary" I know I might sound crazy and I just might be but there are people I love and care about in this world and I don't trust most our government or law enforcement to protect them so maybe it's up to me and others who would

I have massive respect for Spider-Dan, not just for his amount of times of climbing tall buildings, but also the tribute to the 9/11 victims and for his father.
Or you'll live long enough to become a middle aged neckbeard, dressed as Batman, and including your cottage cheese thighed girlfriend in your escapades.
I grew up out that way in the 90s. People hid shit back then in Seattle, now it's freaking madness in almost all big cities. Phoenix Jones would have been murdered hella fast now a days.
I feel like the Potasky Batman was genuinely doing what he did for the better of his community, its just he made some dumb choices when police got involved which does fit the Batman thing He doesnt seem like a bad dude, he seemed like he did want to help
He genuinely does. I've known him for years. Yeah, we have him shit for the suit, but he's always been big on protecting those that can't protect themselves.
tbh in early eps of the show arrow the cops did not like the green arrow and it was against the law in the show to be a vigilante at the time, so this is more realistic, there is alot of content where super heroes are seen as villains, take j jonah jameson with spider man, and walter peck with the ghost busters
I've met Phoenix Jones on two occasions. Once while working part time as a bouncer and he happened to be on patrol. The second time I met him is when he was training at the same MMA gym. He actually held the mitts for me once and I wondered how he cut weight to get to 155 Lbs. for a fight. He was a big dude. But his head was always elsewhere.
Phoenix Jones is just one (larger than life) example of why I live by (among others) the mantra "The only way not to be disappointed by your heroes is not to have any".
First, Brazil mentioned lesgooo ahem, speaking of Brazil, there was this one guy here who would pretend to be a 14 year old girl, talk to prospective pedos, meet them and beat the sh*t out of them while wearing a Spiderman costume. He was like 15 or 16 himself, too. I think he managed to do it twice before stopping (can't remember why, if police intervened or w/e).
@@domingosjunior6805 Sounds familir to a few cases in UK, it's a vicious cycle, those that do run these 'pedo hunts' want it ongoing once they form their own community and connections, and if they can't find known suspects will inciting others to becoming targets. Other times the people they target may be aware and setup someone has nothing to do with it so these hunt groups attack the wrong person and get into trouble. And it's not like this information is forwarded to police it's instead exchanged round the mob with some looking an excuse to hurt someone. On the surface they appear to be doing 'good' but are driving offenders deeper underground.
Here I sit, a 30 year old man, huge fan of super hero’s from comic books and other media alike, and I NEVER knew there were actual super hero groups out there 😮

A lot more of a “Super” vibe than “Kick Ass,” definitely. Although the dudes involved in this nonsense wanted to see themselves more as Kick Ass I’m sure.
@@jackcero44sorry but nope, not at all. The comic book premiered in '08, the film adaptation in '10, Phoenix and the RCSM were not a thing till '11. Trust me I vividly remember living through this because I loved the movie when it came out and just enjoyed the premise of literal nobodies just dressing up to fight crime. Next thing you know, all these "real life superheros" and groups started popping up and I had legitimately thought about dressing when I was a teenager and doing the less violent community outreach stuff, never did but sometimes the thought still crosses my mind. All of these people across the US that popped up around the same time were definitely inspired by the movie, not the other way around. TL,DR: you've got it backwards, Kickass inspired specifically these people around that time lol. Look it up, you'll see very quickly its true .
@@donovanfaust3227 that's all based on you assuming I was talking about Jones' group. Several other groups and solo rlsh existed long before him. I know because I remember when Mark Millar came to our community to gather info on it. ;)
No it's not. He's interested in being perceived as a hero, not in actually helping people. This is just him trying to justify that. He's nothing more than a larper.
Say what you want about the Batman guy, but his costume looks pretty good and I actually like the message he's trying to send Edit: the first Batman not the Brazillian one lmao
Anyone dressing up as Batman to stop actual crime is missing one key thing that works for Batman and why he works stopping the criminal underworld... He is literally a Ninja and rarely caught on camera to the point most people don't even believe he exists or is an urban legend. Many even believe he is a made up by the Gotham City Police to keep criminals in check. Hard to be a urban legend and successful vigilante when your posing for the cameras and have the fighting skills of a trick-or-treater. TDK even pointed this out when the Joker kidnapped and tortured one fat Batman wannabe and later left his corpse hanging on a building. Unless you have actual Superpowers and fancy gadgets, your just a moving target.
To add some context to Phoenix Jones, from someone who lived in his area. As a trained mma fighter he was seen outside pubs/restaurants waiting for problems, he'd assault drunk people with what by all means are legally considered a deadly weapon. Not only that, his later escapades were against drug dealers, and his group were implied to be pushing other dealers out of the area so they could have all the profit once the costumes were off. I know a few of them were dealing personally that were also donning costumes.
He himself was once caught selling drugs thanks to police set-up, so yeah guy tried to play superhero to be able to assault others and later himself became de facto leader of drug dealing gang.
I know he played a superhero on TV and not in real life but I was half expecting the case of the Red Ranger who went from Wild Force to attacking someone with a sword.
There used to be a neck-beard dude that walked around in a fedora and trenchcoat. He had a sword cane. This was back in the late 90's before it could be ironic. He called himself the "night-walker" and said he was protecting the innocent. He got caught peeking in old lady's windows and got on the sex offender list after looking up porn on the library computer and touching himself.
This has inspired me to move up to Petoskey and, as The Spring Arbor Joker, establish The Petoskey Legion of Doom! Any aspiring local level super-villains are encouraged to apply! The fuzz up there sound hella bored. "Wait til they get a load of me!"
So i am Petoskey Batman and i just want to say thayb i really enjoyed this guys video as he didnt really seem to give any unfair slants to the stories. That said, i do have a coupel small things to elaborate on: 1- athe Crow thing... that wasnt any attempt at being a superhero or vigilante or whatever. I was a huge Brandon Lee fan and it was tragic what happened to him on thatbmovie set. I was 14 when i watched it. By this time, i was already planning on doing the Batman thing, but the crow is a beautiful story that i connected with and i was a bit of an outcast as a kid... so i wore all black and i would wear the make up as a tribute to Lee and it just kind of became how people knew me. And throufh that, i found my family. 3 of the best friends i could ehave ever hoped for that even after all of these years, are still right there by my side. 2- the incident in 2012.. what i did not say in the interview was thatbthe cop completely lied about me. Everything the guy in the video said about me seeing it, checking itbout, and calling 911 is all true. While i was on with 911, they informed me that the police ask that i leave the area and i immediately agreed and even stayed on with 911 as i was exciting the slightly wooded area and got to a drive of a subdivision. When i got there i told them i was heading to the road to leave and hung up. As i was aproaching the road, the state trooper pulled up. I described what happened, showed the exact path i took and THAT is when he told me to turn around and put cuffs on me. N3ver said why i was arrested, just berated me for being out there, told me how much h3 bassically disliked my beingbout in the suit, which is NOT iliegal, and everything BUT why i was arrested. After being locked up for about an hour, i was told i was being charged for interfering with an investigation and failure to follow a lawrful order. After 2 weeks, i was told they were dropping everything but charging me with tresspassing because the property i was on jad no tresspasing signs up....bim assumimng because they listened to the 911 tapes and realized how full of shit that cop was. Ive been in trouble before and if i was guilty i always took my punishment... out of all those times, i never got mad at the cops for doing theor job and the majority were really cool... this cop was lying through his teeth and severely abused his power. I havnt seen him around so im assuming he was transfered.
@@DMJoeBing yeah, unfortunately that one is back.... every time he sees me, he will follow me. Last summer I was delivering to a place up by the college. I came to a stop at the corner of Sheridan and emmet, there were a couple.kf cars ahead of me,and he was turning onto Sheridan off emmet.. as soon as he saw it was me, he turned around. Followed me all the way up that road that runs right next to the college and heads up toward the back side.... then, about 2 months later he did the same thing at the light by the old LA Seniorita... I was just turning off M-119, he was heading toward alanson.. whipped around and followed me all the way to the top of Division hill. Then just recently, Bri and I were on our way back from getting her van and we were just comming into Charlevoix from TC... It was a state trooper, as soon as he passed he hit the brakes and just sat there in the middle of the road. By the time I got to the road by the old Glens, he was already on me and followed me all the way to the bridge... that one I can't say for sure was him, but it sure seemed like it. Long-time viewer, stalker, fan (probably since 2021) but recent subscriber (you know how it works lol) and I actually came into this video with relatively low expectations. BUT your BRAND is solid, and I knew that a "bad" video from Wavywebsurf is still a high bar relative to other youtubers and that AT THE LEAST the video would be mildly entertaining and pass the time for 50 minutes. This was a good video though, and I just want to say that you are perhaps the most consistent or one of the most consistent 'true crime' youtubers in terms of quality and substance; you always deliver an entertaining topic in an entertaining way, unlike WAY TOO MANY true crime shows heavily relying on humor to fill space and get attention (LPOTL as a prime example on the top of mind). Your shows are primarily driven by delivering a compelling story, and you have just the right amount of humor in the course of that. So I say all of that to say, keep doing what you do, in my eyes you "have a trusted brand, and we know what you are going to deliver" not in a boring and predictable way. When you order a Mcdouble at McDonald's anywhere in the USA you know what are getting, and 99 out of`100 tmes you are happy. When a wavywebsurf video comes out 299 times, you damn know that 296 are of great or at least good quality!!! WOOO. Consistency, a super underrated attribute.

I was quite relieved his story didn't end with him falling.
Hold on, I have to rant about something unimportant real quick:
The idea of batman being a loner is a huge misconception.
Yeah, at the minimum Batman has Alfred and Commissioner Gordon, two people he really respects

As concerning as Dan Goodwin’s climbs must have been, it’s pretty screwed up that the fire chief attempted to spray the windows of which he climbed.

I love Batman, but I don't believe in violence, even if he resortes to it for a good reason.
Imagine if he fell, it's not that surprising.
@@InVinoVeratas Yeah that was the one point I disagreed with lol
Yes we've all seen the movies!
Well, that and Batman actually solved crimes and stopped criminals. He didn't just interfere in investigations or annoy the folks conducting them. The billions of dollars didn't hurt either. Fictional characters are often more noble and effective than their real-life counterparts.

Yeah it sucks... Hopefully there is one hero who is doable and decent in this timeline xD.
Nice Proto Mother 3 profile btw.
Yeah it's sad in a way
tbh in early eps of the show arrow the cops did not like the green arrow and it was against the law in the show to be a vigilante at the time,
so this is more realistic,
there is alot of content where super heroes are seen as villains,
take j jonah jameson with spider man,
and walter peck with the ghost busters
How is it ironic? The whole reason heroes have secret identities is so that they can work outside the confines of the law. It's literally the point.
That's not ironic at all, that's what heroes do
I've met Phoenix Jones on two occasions. Once while working part time as a bouncer and he happened to be on patrol. The second time I met him is when he was training at the same MMA gym.

@@jackcero44sorry but nope, not at all. The comic book premiered in '08, the film adaptation in '10, Phoenix and the RCSM were not a thing till '11.

The words “A hero can be anyone” from The Dark Knight Rises is a great example of the Petoskey Batman.
I know he played a superhero on TV and not in real life but I was half expecting the case of the Red Ranger who went from Wild Force to attacking someone with a sword.
I first thought of a Japanese power rangers stunt man who used his acrobatics to commit burgalaries at 70!
Not surprised. Its odd how everyone forgets these are grown men doing this....red flag city.

WWS, you always cover the coolest topics and your voice is news anchor worthy. Mornings are always the best when I have a new WWS vid to watch and listen to. Keep up the great work brother! 🤘
I needed something to watch at this came at the perfect time
The duality between Phoenix and the Petoskey Batman was interesting. One understood the risks but wanted to help people anyway and the other was an egomaniac who knew about the risks but didn't care about them.
Holy shit, our boy looking fresh
"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain.."
Oh man the personal stories I could tell you about Phoenix Jones....
Phoneix Jones really thought he was him. Bro revealed his identity like he was Iron-Man or something 💀
I can't believe the Fire🚒Department sprayed water on Spider-Dan like that...unreal...😒👎🏼💯✔️

Batman with a TH-cam channel
Modern DC writers: "QUICK! WRITE THAT DOWN!"
growing up in Harbor Springs it’s wild getting to see him mentioned in a TH-cam video. Something not mentioned in the video is that Batman wasn’t his first anti-hero impersonation. He painted/drew a giant Crow symbol by his home.
Yeah, Mark didn't fight crime in that though. That was when there was actually a goth scene up there, or rather, what little of any "scene" you could get up there. Mark wasn't the only one dressed as the Crow either.
Anyone who tries this hard to be recognized as a hero, is not a hero.
Phoenix Jones is a demonstration that Watchmen is the most accurate superhero depiction. Guy seems like a massive narcissist who created more problems than he solved.
🤣 The Avengers sledging-down a drug den door and shuffling in.
I remember growing up watching CTV seeing Dan climb the CN Tower. I'm glad he was able to retire on his own terms and is still healthy and hale!
