  • Archive footage from 25th October 2018 showing Krakatau volcano erupting spectacularly in Indonesia.
A larger eruption some weeks later from the same volcano caused a tsunami which has killed more than 160 people.
    Background information:
Krakatau, a small island group in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java is one of the world's most famous volcanoes. It is a mostly submerged caldera with 3 outer islands belonging to the rim and a new cone, Anak Krakatau, that has been forming a new island since 1927 and remains highly active.
Krakatau exploded spectacularly in a devastating Plinian eruption 1883 that killed more than 30,000 people (mostly by the huge tsunamis triggered by the eruption). The eruption was one of the first global news events after telegraph lines had connected the different continents.

Tambora was the worst compared to Krakatoa's eruption inn1883. Imagine Tambora's eruption spewed matter large enough to cover the entire Indian sub continent with 6 inch ash. Also it took 4 years for its effect to completely wear off. The first year without summer, global temperatures dropped by 3.5 degC, completely disrupting the global weather pattern and climate conditions. Irregular rains caused crop failure and wide spread famine

      Psalm 144
      (A Psalm of David.)
Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.
      Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

I've just read the book by Simon Winchester "Krakatoa" description of the 1893 eruption which destroyed the
original volcano. Highly recommendable book. He not only desribes the tragedy itself but all the scientific
evidence of the time. The world of scientists did not know about the tectonic plates moving, as that has been
proven only around the 1960ies. Mr. Winchester digs deep into this fascinating world of our planet.
