    In the 60’s my brother and his buddies had to stay in school or go to Vietnam. A guy in Glasgow came to dad and my 5 uncles, said if you help me buy this machine, I will stack your bales. It was 2 x 4 x 7 machine with a V4 Wisconsin motor. It could maybe do 35 on the highway. It worked great, the second year Garth had a retriever truck. The bale wagon field stacked the hay, then the truck hauled it to the stack yard. Third year Garth had 2 bale wagons. They worked from the Canadian border to the Missouri River, in three countries. Saved a lot of bad backs. Thank you whoever invented the Sperry Bale Wagon!

    Loved watching these machines cruise the fields years ago and you new what brand it was a mile away by it's color and appearance. They sure made life a lot easier for the farmer and farm worker's alike. New Holland had some of the best specialty and hay equipment in my opinion. Thx for posting!👍

    When I was 16-17 years old in 1974-1975 I had a little summer side business after our crops were all taken care of until harvest. I picked up bales (both square and round) that farmers had let drop on the ground and I hauled them to their barns and stacked them in the hay mow. I charged 15 cents per bale, and I hired a crew of teenagers from my high school. At first I paid them by the hour, but some of them were not such good workers and so I switched to paying them by the bale, just like I was getting paid by the farmer. The bad workers really hated that. LOL. But the good workers didn't mind at all. On about our best days we might get 1000 bales picked up and put away, which really wasn't as much as we should have gotten done. I worked an area about 10-15 miles around our home farm. I rented Dad's JD 4020 Diesel and rented several of the neighbor's hay racks. Didn't make a lot of money at it (probably should have charged more than 15 cents), but it was an interesting experience, and got to meet a lot of nice farmers who really appreciated what I was doing for them.

      When I first started stacking by hand in about 1990 i was getting 19 cents which is what the guys with bale wagons were charging at the time. Seeing an opportunity to make some money and save some time/ labor, dad helped me buy a 1049 bale wagon in 91 or 92 (can't remember) and when I first started that's what I was charging too when I did custom work. Gas and parts had been creeping up, so after a few years I went up to an unheardof 25 cents.

    I got to do numerous jobs working on these models in Grand Island Nebraska. I was able to balance the steer tires on this high speed loaders. Also at the same plant I was able to rush parts to the production lines for these models as well. It was awesome to see and also be a part of the production of these stackers!

With everything changing and large square bails becoming more popular, I wondered if these were still working. What a great video thank you for the great videos always love watching what you find and film.

      Here is a little tidbit. The original models were called Harobed's. My Grandfather was the first to purchase one in central Wa. St back in the the mid sixties. The Rep from New Holland explained that the inventors daughter had died at a young age due to a form of cancer, her name was Deborah hence the name of the piece of equipment just spelled backwards. My father at the age of 16 was the only one who figured out how to run it properly and they paid off the whole 8000.00 price tag in one summer at .10 a bale doing custom work. It was a self propelled unit with a Wisconsin air cooled engine. My grandfather was one of the first also to put bigger tires on it and lengthen the bed so it would stack nine high, still only four deep. I am now 48 yrs old and I still have people coming up to me and telling me about this young punk hauling ass through the field and how he never seemed to sleep (my father). This was in the days of no air conditioner and you had to climb onto second table and tie the bales by hand. We kept that model all while I was a kid. When I turned 14 Dad purchased a brand new 1068 and threw me behind the wheel and he was done for most part. We are all big bales now and own Stinger Stackers. But the Harobed was the the coolest piece of equipment to operate. We even drove them to school so as to stack afterwards. Heck I even took a girl on a date in it because I wasn't old enough to have a license. Too bad the dropped the Harobed name though.

    This is the most efficient haying system I have ever seen. At first, I wondered why those balers were dropping the bales on the ground on edge until saw the wagon pick them
    up, so that answered that question. When I first started hauling hay in the late 60's & early 70's we used the "Armstrong Hay Loading System" I do believe I could have gotten
    along very easy with this setup.

    Now that brought back memories! We had a 1069 with a gas engine,,,, if you really wanted to blow people’s minds you should have videoed when they made a “tie tier” spikes come up on the second table on the end two bales, kicks the middle bale down, then the first table only puts up tow bales until it fills three rows. If I had a nickel for every bale of hay I’ve picked up in one of these,,,, I could probably buy one of these new! Thanks for sharing!

      I tried this machine a few days ago. I couldn’t tell if I was making mistakes or a sensor was off?
      My stack would have improper patterns and I’d end up having to hand stack the pattern,more often than I expected. But I loved the challenge. Very fun

    Thanks for doing this video. Just a amazing machine. I don’t think you could get this job done if you had to rely on finding people to hand stack all that hay. Hats off to the hay truckers and hay bucks who move this hay to the end customer.

    • @karlrovey
      @karlrovey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how the bales will be used. Dairies and other places where indoor storage is used require the space efficiency of square bales. If you're selling to a place that needs hay (or straw in this case) on a regular basis, this is the way to go.

    Kudos to the makers of both baler and stacker and to the team who maintain them in good condition. In an operation of this scale, one would expect to see a few piles of hay/straw from broken bales, but everything looked squeaky-clean. In my time, lifting by hand was dirty, time-consuming and painful as very few farmers had a bale elevator.

    My uncle bought one of these new in 1973, it was a 1049, the biggest at the time. I recall the monstrous price tag of $19,000 being the talk of the community. I ran it a lot that year and for a 17 year old it was quite an experience for me. It had a Ford V8 360 cu. in. gas engine and I think a 5 speed manual. Same size as the one in the video; 160 bale capacity. A little weird to get used because the operator sat so far out in front of the front axle. Otherwise it looked very much the same as the one in the video. No a/c of course. I often wondered if NH still made them. Interesting video.
