The sound from the front of the horn will be different than what you hear. For smoothness and consistency in tone through the range, I thought the Elkhart was best.
I bought my 99 Eastlake 8DR from Dennis in 2008. It is definitely darker sounding than the nickel. The playability is decent, but has some oilslicks on the F side. Sometimes switch to the B side just for security. An aside, I was in Pittsburgh a couple weeks ago to see the PSO, Andy Warhol museum, and some hockey. Heinz Hall has fine acoustics and the PSO is a marvelous group. Met Mark and also Bob Lauver and Zach Smith after the show. Well worth the trip.
Thanks for a great comparison!! As a 6+ decades amateur hornplayer. I watched your videos of the Paxman 20 and Finke Europa - the sound of both seemed a bit wimpy to me which I ascribed to your recording setup. BUT... now comes your 8D comparison and the 8Ds all sound like "real" horns:) Some years back I bought a Hoyer 6801 from you and this video testifies to that being the right choice for me (very Conn 8D sound).

Thank you! Excellent presentation!
I don’t really mind the new thumb linkage although I do prefer the standard mechanical linkage on my Alex 103
The thumb linkage is a deal breaker for me. Tried one and it came undone repeatedly as I played it. When tightened it made the valve stiff.

Is there a way to decrease the thumb lever throw from 60s Elkhart 8d? Modification?
The thumb linkage is a lost opportunity. The older string linkages were a lot better.
'24- brittle and unpleasant sound
C series- resonant musical sound
older Eastlake- dull and stuffy sound
