The clan tried block off his escape routes and were spread out over many acres and didn't have to fight all of them all at once. It was also at night and he surprised the first group protecting the head of clan, who at that time was only 12. Once he cut down their best swordsmen, he battled small groups of men in the darkness. Musashi was also almost 6 feet tall when the average Japanese male was barely over 5 feet so he was much larger and stronger.

That is probably a very Western appreciation of Zen. Japanese Zen is very practical. if they didn't care about living, they'd have just died out. When they must die, to save honor, for instance, they definitely do. Otherwise, they'll cling to life like anyone else.
