- The Character Sheet is back with more Fantasy and TTRPG News, and today we are looking at the numbers on Beacon, the new content platform created and owned by Critical Role, and how it's impact the critter fan base on Twitch and TH-cam. Has Beacon succeeded in drawing a huge chunk of @criticalrole fans and the subs away from Twitch? Is the gamble the Critical Role cast made on their new Beacon platform already starting to pay off? We'll break down some pretty shocking numbers to show you just how much Critical Role's new Beacon service is impacting their fanbase on Twitch and TH-cam...and what that could mean for the future!

Have you dropped your Twitch sub for Beacon? Are you excited to check out the new Critical role platform? Let us know!
No, because I don't have a Twitch account to begin with. Nor will I join Beacon. I'll keep watching for free on TH-cam. I have no need for the perks. The thing I noticed was we did lose something to Beacon. The Fireside Chat.
Yup dropping my CR Twitch sub for Beacon. Costs about the same and I'd rather it all go to them
No (not yet?) I use Prime Free for their channel for now on Twitch.
Yep. Goodbye Twitch. Hello Beacon. Especially looking forward to Critical Role Cooldown! Love BTS stuff. Also curious about Re-Slayers Take. I wish it wasn't just audio though.
As soon as I heard the news I joined beacon. The full episode goes live along with Twitch. Beacon also edits the break out in the middle. I’m shocked he the backlog of the after episode cooldowns!
I'll subscribe once there's more additional content that would make sense. As a lifelong D20 fan, I'm excited to see the direction that Beacon takes for sure.
I am really hoping for more crossovers between Beacon and Dropout.
it will become the D20 version of Daggerheart
Sticking with prime subs and watching on youtube. Only reason, because I'm poor and can't add another subscription. I'd imagine alot of people are in the same position, while others who can will jump over :) especially with the store discount, that is a really good incentive ngl
This is the exact reason we are glad Critical Role is leaving those free viewing options available!
@@TheCharacterSheet 100% there, making it accessible for people and expanding to another service was the best of both worlds for sure
Eventually however they will ditch YT and make CR a Beacon Exclusive
@jamesmaclennan4525 true, which would give them full creative freedom and a better revenue stream. I don't know if they would move to full exclusivity on beacon because of the exposure on YT and twitch though. Exposure is a powerful thing, if you follow pc gaming many publishers have tried going away from steam and using their own launcher- but it's so embedded into the pc ecosystem, it's just better to deal with the revenue split on steam along side their own launcher.
@@TheCharacterSheet for now anyways, there's no guarantee that'll remain in the future.
The only thing I don’t like is that we can’t get C1 or the first 20 episodes of C2 on this new service. CR should really try to get the rights back from Legendary, or whoever owns the content.
We imagine that is also high up on their list as well!
Oh that's why it's not on there. I was wondering why campaign 1 was missing.
I dropped my paid YT sub (membership?) before I finished the State of the Role video. FWIW, I haven't signed up for the Discord yet, and I doubt it throws me in there without my info, so there may be an unknown mass of hidden subscribers as well.
I am not big on chat, as both YT & Twitch (esp Twitch) were toxic. I may try their Discord and hope for better, but I am so used to going without chat that I may still forego it entirely.
Critical Cooldown already makes the change from one paid service to another more than worth it, and I hope we get some more Actual Play campaigns from them - it'd be pretty neat to see a Daggerheart campaign, for one, and more EXU content (especially era/legacy content like Calamity) would be a wonderful add.
It does make me wonder about the future of their animated shows. Is Amazon growing bored & reluctant to continue, or could Beacon ascend to become the new one-stop shop for their animated content as well?
I'm not sure moving away from Twitch equates to abandoning Amazon as a whole, but it might be the case. IIRC, CR pays for all the shows costs and gets paid by Amazon to release on Prime, so assuming that is the arrangement, we might see a change on that sooner than later, as CR will own all the rights to the content.
I agree on all points.
I am not too surprised at the initial success of Beacon. I will still watch the main campaign on You Tube...but the extra and library of content on Beacon is helpful in the storytelling overall. Plus, the potential is endless...and it's a reasonable price compared to other entertainment options.
Yeah, the growth and potential for content it allows is pretty exciting
the the CEO of twitch did refer to these type of roleplay channels as "adult babysitting" lol.
Wow, that was nice of him... Sounds like a very foot in mouth situation.
What a way to encourage people to use the platform /s
Oh yeah f* that guy..... Anddd damn it he is right. I caught myself hitting my adult binky also known as my vape as I was going to write my comment😅😅😅
I cancelled my twitch for Beacon mostly because I am just not a fan of the interface. I do agree that free viewing should be still available for everyone and I have no doubt they will keep main campaigns free as CR seems to understand accessibility and inclusion.
Yep, twitch sucks. I jumped to beacon the instant I could.
I joined Beacon and never subbed on Twitch. Cost worth it just for Cool Down at this point and I expect more to come. The app still needs a bunch of work to make watching outside of YT feasible since I watch each episode in chunks across the entire week while doing chores.
I think Beacon's growth won't be similar to Dropout because the original College Humor sub base was a very broad audience that will just find comedy content elsewhere. CR pool of subs is more narrowly focused and already had community connections built up overtime.
That would be a good thing of their fans leave Twitch. Twitch is owned by Amazon, & Billionaires are IRL dragons.
Yup, and Critical Role doesn't have to give almost half of every one of their subs to that company instead of to themselves
You do know Amazon puts out The Legend of Vox Machina. They're definitely tied to Amazon.
@theshadowfax239 But that's another type of contract. Where CR benefits in a much better way because they're licensing their content vs. Self-posting the content on a platform.
@@theshadowfax239 Hopefully this is the 1st step to breaking that connection.
@@SteveFromTheOtherSide If you break that connection product quality goes out the window.. I doubt you're going to get CR themselves to foot out the multiple millions it takes to put out that show in the expected quality compared to the previous seasons. Let alone M9
Just hope CR doesn't end up locking Campaigns , One Shots , Candela Obscura , and even Abridged behind Beacon if it remains sucessful. Sadly can't support them with a paid membership and i like to watch what i just mentioned. Abridged if all episodes are released in here , it will make me catch up with C3
They said they won't so they probably won't. They don't tend to go back on their promises. I think the only locked thing is the short 5-10 min stuff after episodes end where they're talking to each other about the episode that just happened.
It doesn't seem like that will be the case, although some Beacon only one shots could become a reality, but the main campaign seems safe fo rnow
I’m also stuck behind the inability to afford anything beyond my bills and food, so I hope to still get access to content while I wait for new episodes.
@@marissameeks6645 I was told if you buy some boot straps you can pull yourself up by them. Unfortunately bootstraps cost about $20k a pair. Capitalism.
I would not be worried about that. They saw what happened when Watcher tried to do that recently. It didnt go over well for them.
In the add space of episode 94 they explained it pretty well why they did it, and to be honest it makes sense to me.
Dropped my Twitch sub IMMEDIATELY when they announced Beacon. Switched my Dropout sub to a yearly one directly through them as well when they did that campaign push last year. They all make so much great content, I'm more than happy to support them more directly so that EVERYONE gets to enjoy it.
I only subscribed to Twitch due to the free Prime membership and to participate in the chat. Now that Prime video has commercials and I don’t order enough to care about free shipping, I’ll drop it and stick with Beacon and the Discord chat. Was pleasantly surprised that they’ve posted some videos, like the after-show content, that they’ve been recording for weeks now so there’s more new content than I expected.
Happy to support them directly on Beacon! I know how big a cut the popular platforms (this one, Twitch, etc) take from creators, so more money going to creators is great. And supporting alternatives will open up more opportunities for content distribution.
I dropped twitch for beacon. I haven't joined beacon yet, but will once the twitch sub expires.
I'm a huge fan of DND, been playing since 1982, and of Critical role's cast, crew, critters and their company. I've been with CR since camp 2 and have watched all their content. CR is awesome...! They are so dam smart and I enjoy backing them. Talk about bucking the system and doing whats enjoyable for all interested parties involved, so far they got my vote. What the hell... CR for President! lol. I haven't dropped twitch or youtube at this time cause I want to give CR the most I can on all their avenues, support them the best I can. In time, I'll watch and change things accordingly. Yes, I'm already on Beacon and think it's great.
Here's the issue, possibly. Does beacon have app support anywhere? Can I play it on my roku? or PS4? If not, I'm not really interested. It's like Corridor crew that does all the special effects and stunt men reacts stuff. They have a streaming service that they keep promising to have support for roku soon, but don't. I'm not going to pay for a service that I can only watch on my phone.
It was smart of them to charges the same as a twitch sub. It was a no brainer for me to switch where I was spending that money from Twitch to Beacon.
It is still taped episdoes right?
I have a membership,my family loves critical role and we are happy to have a way to directly support them
tens of thousands of Prime memberships up for grabs now
I don't watch Twitch, so I have been a YT audience of CR for years, but now I am hyped to becoming a Beacon member. The fact that how good the Beacon content is (even at this stage) and their decision to not abandon YT and Twitch just (unintentionally) threw the watcher under a bullet-train track lol (not that I am against it).
Will the loss of twitch subs hurt CR relationship with Amazon in greenlighting future animated seasons?
I don't understand the "doom and gloom" for the potential that they go full paywall years from now. I get why that would be bad then, but why does that affect the positives that are happening right now? And people are pointing out that its a bad business decision because they'll lose possible new viewers, but then fully believe they'll do it?
This is a good place to be right now, and they'll do this for quite some time. My only concern is if they leave twitch, will that hurt LofVM? Could Amazon be that petty that they hurt one revenue stream as punishment for another decision?
But they're not really leaving twitch. They still stream everything on twitch, they're just incentivising people to support them on beacon instead of subscribing to twitch. It's like them having a patrion. I don't think we need to worry about LoVM or MN
@rebekahhiggins9002 I agree, but I'm reading comments and people are already ready to jump ship because of a perceived future where they abandon YT and Twitch. That's my point
Well, the good thing is you won't have censor Nazis telling you that you can't talk about certain topics or using certain colorful language choices.
Beacon is the Critical Role version of G&S's Alpha!
Here's hoping it lasts longer!! 🤣🤣🤣
@@Waterflame The only thing that killed Alpha and G&S was Critical Role leaving! : (
@@shallendor Very true. I just really miss VAST!
I do wish they would just be honest and say they no longer want to split their profits with their host sites as they could easily just add this content to their youtube channel if that was all they wanted to do was not be beholden to algorithms as it takes no more effort to check a youtube page manually then to check another website for new content manually as noone is going to find it organically, if they had to monetize it they could lock new content like bts videos behind channel memberships like they do for instant vods. At the end of the day though they still need twitch and youtube to grow their audience as if they ever go off platform it will slowly but surely loose their current fans without the ability to draw in new fans.
Um... not true. Critical Role can grow their fanbase by doing a lot of things. They need to expand the cartoons, and license movie rights to Critical Role the Movie make a Beacon Tesla App.
I don't care one way or the other, but if successful, it could mean a significant chunk of change directly into CR's pocket. Not a bad for, to be sure.
I would love to see if CR hosts other ttrpg content that would give creators a greater cut. But probably not.
I imagine they will do similar things to what they’ve done with Midst once that show’s last season wraps up.
Ngl I don't think this is a bad idea. It sounds like CR is taking a page from Sam Reich/CH by doing something like Dropout. I will however have to wait for more content to be added.
If Beacon and Dropout merge then I’m in.
The only reason i was subbed to Twitch was due to CR. Now I can instead just sub to them :)
think itll do great in the short term but think it will slow way down and have a huge decline in the long run. Not enough to kill it but enough to where they probably wont be doing much with it
Switching to Beacon soon.
i look at Beacon like dropout. Im happy to support them. But they need to seriously improve the UI. I use twitch for more than just CR, so im not going to drop it just yet.
If and when Becon gets better I will absolutely switch. But im not going to switch just for them. Sorry but they're a company like any other. A small company to be sure, but they still have to earn it.
I'll use beacon if I can pay the same I pay for dropout. since that's not possible, at least for now, I'll keep twitch and TH-cam
I dropped my TH-cam Premier Sub, along with my sub to the CR TH-cam channel. 22.99/mo. Vs. 5.99/mo. with Beacon. 18.00/month is a lot of money back in the pocket per year.
I dont watch them on twitch and becon and wont for the same reason: now downloads for offline viewing
I mean... I sure did!
Tbh, I use my Prime Sub for CR, so in a sense, my subscription isn’t going to CR already. So for me, I’m more than happy to pay up for Beacon.
If I had the money I'd be there. In a heartbeat I'd rather them get the money then some other company taking some first
Dropout sustains a pretty good business with this private model, and they don't even have Twitch and YT to draw subscribers from. I think they will be fine.
Dropout does put really old episodes of stuff on TH-cam but dunno how much that attributes to getting a subscription and if dropout cares for that
~yeah but DropOut has soooo much more content and only for 6bucks a month. I just I dunno to each their own, but for me bang for buck is not there :/
If CR drops 6 or 7 shows like how dropout has maybe~ but from what has been said its nowhere near to that and in a world where more and more ppl want their own platform to follow dropout the more stretched consumers will become and some are already too stretched financially.
@@houndgirl7365 I think the target audience for Beacon right now is people who were already subed on twitch or members on youtube. These are people that have already decided that what critical role offers right now is worth the 5$ or 6$ a month to them. They're already paying it, it's just a matter of moving that subricption to a new platform where CR has more control. I think eventually there will be more content and they will be able to draw more people in, but for now, I think the plan is just to transition the current subscribers over to the new platform.
Haven't dropped only because of prime sub. I know they get very little of that money so throwing them an extra 6ish bucks a month isn't going to hurt.
Id be interested in beacon if they proivde more payment options. Not everyone owns a credit card
they arent interested in customers who dont have a credit card my dude.
Well I never actually used twitch, instead used TH-cam since I am always at work when they’re live. But I am cancelling my TH-cam subscription for beacon. It’s like the same amount but for FAR more content.
D&D has a subscription service and now does CR. Interesting.
I love that everyone bitched at Watcher and then like half a dozen channels also dropped their own exclusive streaming service or websites and everyone is just fine with that. Like mfers you weren't even in Watcher fanbase and you bitched, but your community does the same thing and its fine?
In fairness, people rightfully bitched about Watcher because they intended to fully abandon TH-cam and lock all their content behind a paywall. Beacon hosts some exclusive content and other perks to entice you to subscribe via Beacon rather than Twitch subs or TH-cam memberships, but CR have been pretty clear that most of their content will still be available for TH-cam and Twitch viewers. In fact, they probably emphasized this so much **because** of the Watcher backlash.
@@subzer0381 My point was it was people entirely outside of the watcher community of fans that had their little shit fit. People who had never watched the shows or even knew about them. But when it was THEIR people doing it, thats all well and good. Its the hypocracy i'm calling out.
Can you really not discern the difference between Watchers model and this one?
I don't even use Twitch anymore, considering how many buttheads are there.
really? this is like kick...we are still waiting to find out about kick. good luck...
Unlike Kick, the creator controls this plaftorm, and also it isn't owned by offsite gambling companies lol
@@TheCharacterSheeti disagree with who owns it but they are going up against the elephant in the room. i hope they make it but we shall see
I think Dropout is a better comparison. Or even Patrion. I don't think they're trying to replace Twitch.
am I abandoning Twitch for Beacon ? Yes . As soon as Beacon dropped.
It's good that critical role has something where they get more of a profit, but I don't see one goddamn reason to go over to beacon. I'm still on like episode 15 from season 3. I don't need access to stuff two years in advance considering the piece I'm going through the episodes. Lost a lot of interest in watching it with so much damn roleplay and very little comment but that's what everybody watches
Don’t need to pay for yet another subscription service. I’ll continue to watch with ads on TH-cam for free until CR leaves TH-cam as well then they will have one less viewer.
I'm surprised Twitch didn't get impacted more. 20% leaving seems like a very low percent to me
I'm sure that there are some people (like me) who haven't cancelled their Twitch sub because, even though Amazon takes a portion of that money, CR still gets just a little extra with that sub still intact.
Its only a matter of time before they paywall every aspect of their content with Beacon, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide at the end of the current campaign and completely absorb it starting the next new campaign. If they do that though they close the doors to new possible subscribers that maybe wonder in through checking it out through youtube though, Beacon may sustain original subscribers but makes it harder for new people to discover it naturally, unless by word of mouth. Ideally I would love for current and new campaigns to remain free to watch as it always has been.
For now, at least, they are saying that the status quo as it relates to the primary campaign C2, C3, and presumably C4 a year from now, will be maintained. Moving that stuff behind a paywall would absolutely limit new viewership, which would hurt them as well. I would expect we will likely see more ads in free content (they are already doing more) but it will stay outside, but that's just my bet.
I doubt that future campaigns would lock out new viewers. Just look at Dimension 20's history for evidence. Their flagship campaign "Fantasy High" was released on TH-cam. Then campaign 2 "Sophomore Year" was live streamed on Twitch and then uploaded to TH-cam. A few episodes in, the rest of that season was locked behind the subscription service Dropout and all future campaigns have exclusively been released there ever since. In that time Dimension 20's popularity has only grown, placing them firmly as the Number 2 actual play brand that has had multiple crossovers and partnerships with CR.
So long as CR remains business savvy and releases content of comparable quality that they have been known for thus far, if they make the transition to lock future content behind Beacon, they are most likely not to suffer any notable loss and in fact gain substantially more.
I have dropped twitch for beacon.
Twitch has honestly been awful and flaky...I'm subscribed to Beacon.
Critical role is trying to find ways to make more money ( the actual reason ) and have more control ( minor reason ).
This is because Critical role viewership is falling ( due to many reasons ).
Beacon will also fail.
Did it day one. I don't like twitch.
This is literally what the world destroyed the Watcher channel for lol
Stopped subscribing to CR sometime around the beginning of C2. C2 and C3 just didn't catch my interest so I won't subscribe to Beacon either.
