    I think your African Flower adaptation is brilliant. I made one following your tutorial and was much happier with it than the usual granny square the label calls for 😊

      That makes me so happy to hear! I’m glad it’s working out for others too since it’s sooo particular when it comes to gauge and hook size, etc!

    My mom taught me how to do a granny square in 1968, and she did chain 1 between the shells and chain 3 to turn the corners - so I think that’s a very traditional, old-fashioned way to do granny squares. All the granny square tutorials I’ve seen online don’t use any chains between shells and only chain 2 for the corners, just like your preferred method. This more modern method makes a less lacy, more compact granny square. I’d even call them neater and more “tailor” looking. The old-fashioned granny squares are definitely hole-ier!
    I think your hexagon grannies look fabulous!!
    With mind-bobbling number of variations on granny squares, it’s interesting that Red Heart came out with a specialty yarn for grannies. Trying to come up with a solution to weaving in all those flippin’ ends is a heroic undertaking!j

    • @TheCATTLadyDesigns
      @TheCATTLadyDesigns  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes! I don’t know why they focused on such a traditional style! It would have been pretty easy to roll with the less chains for the “new age” wave of crocheters. But ah well. I still like the fact I don’t have to change colors and don’t have to weave in ends. Even if I do have to fudge it! It’s a cool concept and I like that yarn companies are at least trying to things!
      I am in love with those hexis! Not in love with the fact I’ll be seaming about 80 of them together when I’m all done. 🤣

      Would the extra chains have the colors line up better or worse?

    • @TheCATTLadyDesigns
      @TheCATTLadyDesigns  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@LolaRyckin this case you have to use the extra chains to get the yarn to do its thing. If you didn’t do them then your left with extra at the end of the color

    Sounds like the pattern on the label is an old school granny square…that’s exactly how my grandma taught me to make them. The African flower is really perfect, though!! It’s going to be gorgeous! I crocheted a hippo once using that motif…maybe I need to make one for myself with this!

      @novaconetta1577 I measured the tail anywhere between 7 to 9 inches depending on skein they vary. I did magic loop and tighten the ring I only chain 2 at corners and I pull out the entire color I am working on in case I have to add a double crochet to the 3 double crochet in space. • @snarkycard
    @snarkycard 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    In the fourth row of your African violet flower, if you chain two instead of just one in between the three stitches. you would probably end up with less extra yarn and also leave a big enough space in your final round with the black so you could see it better. This is such a beautiful looking motif and I am looking forward to trying it out. I just got my Red Heart Granny Square yarn today.

    Finally! An honest review. Thank you. I have some on order. I'm 100% sure it won't work for me either. I make my squares nothing like the requirements. I turn at every round, no chain between clusters and only 2 chains on the 1st round. I'll try it their way 1st, do a vid the move on to something else with it. Thanks.

      I did hear people mentioning turning their work actually worked out for them. But if you are missing all those chain spaces…that could make it awkward. You could get lucky though!!! I tend to always NOT be lucky in these kind of scenarios. 🤣

    One comment to help, especially for newbies. I work with Red Heart yarn all the time. The more you pull it out, the more it will stretch. Your solution of sl st around to the next space if you did not use up all the color in the row, is a great one.

Didn't like the square that it made. Big, floppy and holey. Love your squares - lots of potential if theres a built- in way to get the yarn to line up, like slip stitching for a few spaces.

I also long ago learned to crochet over ends when doing color changes. That avoids sewing ends in! What I like from your video is the African voilet pattern. I agree slip stitch to where you need to be is the way to go. I will not mess with this yarn. Thank you for this. I want to do the hexagon violet.

      @TheCATTLadyDesigns  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There is definitely a love/hate mentality with red heart. Haha! It’s not my favorite but for a couch blanket that’s gonna be thrown around it’ll be perfect! It tends to wash and dry up softer than it starts and I don’t tend to be sensitive to any yarns (except for one terrible experience with my first sweater I ever made. 🤣) I usually crochet over ends too so that does make it easier in that sense! The yarn is a cool concept but I don’t think it quite hit the mark. Sure is making the crochet community a buzz though!!

    Thank you so much for doing this video. I'm an experienced crocheter. I ended up going up to a size 8mm then back down (and up repeatedly including a 7mm which is not the sweet spot one would hope) and slip stitching which just irritated me. Interestingly only my Furls Odyssey 8mm got me to the almost exact color change which just highlights the subtle differences in same size hooks and the hook design impact on tension....those are discontinued so other sizes are unavailable. Fannntastic... For the last round, I had to jump down to a 6.5mm to make it work as the 8mm was too loose despite tightening and retightening my tension. I kept thinking geez..what am I doing wrong here. What a pain. I love your African violet adapted pattern, I'm going to try that. Much appreciated! Red Heart made a massive mistake with this yarn. Its almost like Wile E. Coyote designed it. Wait....did he? There it is. 😂

      Yeah the concept was awesome!!! But in reality it ends up just being so annoying. Hi, I wanted to thank you for your African flower motif pattern, I decided finally to try it out over the weekend, and am quite happy with the results, so am super grateful that you were able to create this.
    I mostly used your method but also took some ideas from another channel who spoke about you, Agitha Creates, as her round 3 for some reason worked for me in terms of getting the yarn to last the whole round, so I now have some completed. Mine sort of went into a 3D shape even though I used a 7mm hook for a few of the rounds, but when I work it into a poncho that I'm planning on making that should help to flatten it out a bit. 🤞🏻
    Was curious if you've done a sunburst flower also, I saw a tutorial for that last night that I want to make as well now, bit of variation.
    Are you excited for the new flower power yarn that came out yesterday? They're releasing a tutorial and pattern for it today. I feel like this yarn came about from them seeing people like yourself who used the original granny square yarn to create other pattern ideas, so I think you and a few others like you definitely were the inspiration, pardon the pun! 😉 Thanks 😊

      I agree that some will like it and some still won't, however I feel knowing that there have been some improvements after watching Mikey's review, as there are less colour changes that's a plus, and then knowing that they REALLY LISTENED and added more yarn to the last round is a huge incentive for me and I'm sure many others, as I know for most we were always running out of yarn in that last round, so that's great news!!

    • @TheCATTLadyDesigns
      @TheCATTLadyDesigns  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So I have not put them together yet, but I'm playing with the idea of zigzag stitching them on my sewing machine. I did a little mockup and sewed a few squares together to make a "fanny pack" - I talk about it in one of my later episodes. It worked out quite well! Still a little nervous of screwing something up but I don't know, the thought on not having to hand stitch all of those is very appealing!!! Otherwise my favorite join is a basic handsewn method where you grab the back loop of each stitch and sew them together. Looks very seamless and flat.

    I had similar issues when I did my video. I did not think of doing the extra slip stitches but did add or subtract double crochets which was fine if it was one or two but one attempt called for me loosing six, that did not work. What was super frustrating was some rows I had too much and others not enough which was not consistent to be my hook size or pattern alteration. That last Motif you made was beautiful however.

    • @TheCATTLadyDesigns
      @TheCATTLadyDesigns  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I don’t feel like it’s consistent enough. I know my tension isn’t perfect every time - but sometimes my rows will line up perfect and the next time I’ll be short or have a ton left. lol. So, my first thought for between color three and four on the mitered granny square is to turn the work, slip stitch back for half the remainder of the color three yarn, turn the work again, and slip stitch back to the corner. I think that might make that part a little too bulky though...
    Do you think it would work to pull the stitch you're on back a little ways, then slip stitch over that stitch until you reach the corner with the desired yarn color? I haven't bought any of this yarn, but I think I want to just to experiment with how to make it work!

    Actually, there’s additional way to make a granny square is to change between each cluster. But it’s OK not to change between each cluster. Do it the way you like. I generally change between clusters, but I am making a baby blanket and not change between each cluster so the holes will be smaller, and I do like the way it looks. The great thing about our craft, is that there really is no right or wrong way to do things. You have a problem solving brain. I would have either cut if it didn't make a round in one colour each time or shoved the ball in my scrap box. Thanks for showing us how to do what the yarn is supposed to do.
    For the second type have 2 chains between each cluster or even 3 chains to use up the extra yarn.
    My favorite was the last one. The African flower hexagon. Beautiful.

      I was very determined to make it work out as best as I could. It was such a cool concept for yarn!!

      I notice this with a lot the colorways…too similar of colors next to each other. Not sure why they would do that but it seems intentional!

      Glad to help! I was getting discouraged watching some of the first reviews and everyone was having a good old time getting it to work. I figured I would through a wrench in that and be real about it. Haha. It wasn’t a pretty process for me but I was determined to make this work!

    So I bought this crazy yarn yesterday and after about six hours, total of working with it, I still can’t … I did 5 mm, 5 1/2 mm 6 mm. I think I need to have a smaller fuck because I keep running out of color ahead of time. I’ve tried training two and the quarters instead of three and not doing that extra chain in between the clusters. Nothing is working for me. I wanna try this one more day and then I’ll probably just going to use it for something else because it’s not worth the stress.

      I’m so sorry for the stress!! This is supposed to be fun right?! I was determined to just use the yarn regardless. If still looks kind of cool just random too.

      I’m sure there has to be a way - I’m not entirely sure what the construction would be. This is my first time ever making hexagons!
