Just for conversation about witness trees. The first deer I ever got after cleaning it I stuck my knife in the tree next to it. Because I was so excited about getting the deer I forgot about my knife. I went back to were I thought it was several times and never found it. Some ten years later my then new brother in law was hunting in the same area and found it. He came a got me to show me, talk about a fun little thrill. The tree had grown around it a couple of inches and I could not pill it out. I decided to leave it as a marker of my first deer that was1964. I never did go back after that as we had moved to Florida I often wonder if its still there. Side note I was also born in 1950.

Those sc models are nice. My dad found a regular 336 at a pawnshop years ago and the pawnshop owner gave him a sc model as a parts gun. He took both rifles to his gunsmith and had the sc fixed and reblued and the other old 336 reblued. The gunsmith said that the only thing the sc needed was a few pins and a extractor. Someone obviously didn't know what they had. Thanks for the video. Oh yeah, both rifles along with all of his other firearms are safe and sound in my gun safe.

gosh a mighty George, what a treasure you have there. I was so pleased to hear you say, "when I bought it". I was hoping it wasn't another loaner. If you remember some of our previous conversations and photos, I had a Remington Model 760 in 270 (circa 1954) that I purchased at the Conroe gun show a few months back but had to return it due to its failure to fire. Well Sunday at the same dealer's table he had another Model 760 Gamemaster (circa 1968) in 30-06 that was dang near new looking. He made me a great price (I know that's what everyone says lol) due to bad one before so I couldn't pass it up. Took to the range today and with 180gr Federal shot less than 1.5". I am pleased with it. I'll messenger you a photo later. Oh, BTW....back to that old beautiful, perfectly made Marlin you have.....now that's how you conduct a "brush gun" test. And anuther thing, a dealer had one exactly like yours for $800. I acted all serious about buying it and asked him for his bottom dollar out the door.....$800.00 lol. I had one about 10 years ago that I paid $450 for at the Fort Worth gun show but like most of my rifles, I kicked that can down the road. It's my butt that needs kicking down the road lol. For your new conversations, may I suggest for beginners a series on learning how to hold, aim, and fire a rifle starting with a good .22LR with all safety concerns thrown in too. Start at the beginning so to speak.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe when I "grow up" I can afford to buy and not borrow, but this one was a dream come true. Really. Congrats on your Gamemaster. I really wish I could have been there to share the experience. As you know, my first "deer rifle" was a 760 in 270. So yours would almost be like a walk down memory lane. I'm actually looking for one in .35 Remington, if you can imagine that. They made it in that caliber from '52-'67. Thanks for the "newbie" suggestions. I've added them to the list. Btw, have you ever been to the Tulsa gun show?

Nice shooting and it seems to hit hard . The Ballard rifling should make reloading for accuracy a better deal than the microgroove for certain bullets any way. I like the stain color on those older Marlins.

I bought my 336CS (crossbolt safety) in 1984. Two things I was advised:You can't use lead bullets in the microgroove barrel, and about 4 times is all you can reload the brass. I have proved both to be wrong. Use hard cast lead, and resize to fit your chamber. Don't full length resize, just resize enough so the lever snaps closed and the brass doesn't stretch when fired.

I'm not a newbie but I get questions from them and those questions have picked up over the last year. Main ones are: 1) What gun should I buy for home defense and personal defense? 2) Where can I find ammo? 3) Can I go shoot with you?
    1) The type and caliber of gun depends on the purpose, much like the type of vehicle you buy.
    2) Ammo is hard to find for everyone and reloading isn't even an option any more because primers are so hard to get too. Keep at it and maybe consider choosing a gun for ammo you can get or already have.
    3) I wish I could teach everyone to shoot but I can't. Go watch some people online like Target Suite and see if you can mimic the way they shoot to get better at it.

I watched this video here some time ago , and it inspired me to look far a rifle like this . Well … guess what !? I found one identical to yours today at a local gun show here in Northern Michigan.
It’s the Marlin 336SC in .35 Remington , has an H preceding the serial number ( which indicates it was made in 1951) it is in EXCELLENT Condition, no pitting or rust , only slight wear on the blueing right under the receiver where it was carried while in the field . Light scratches on the stock some small very minute dings , common wear on a rifle from that era . It has a plug on the barrel where the rear semi buckhorns would have been used, with a proper period correct Williams peep sight on the ‘ waffle top ‘ receiver , original front post sight … with exceptional beautiful wood grain on the stock and fore end. Looking inside the barrel with a bore light , it looks like new , perfect condition no pitting or rust , shiny new , just a beautiful piece !
I’m so stoked about this rifle I had to come back here and tell you about it.
The guy was an old Korean War veteran ( which my father also served in the Korean War) and he had it on a table for $925 , after talking with him for a little while, he learned I am also a veteran ( Desert Storm Vet) and so he offered to sell me the rifle for $825 and threw in a free box of ammo and a gun sock to go with it . I was speechless and very grateful and thankful for his offering to sell me such a classic old rifle at a bargain price .
Can’t wait to shoot it this week .

Hi George, what a awesome find in that 336! The 35 cal is a great brush gun as you proved going through that iron wood not once but twice!!
On your new content this Friday are you going to include handguns also? With all the new shooters and new gun owners cleaning care and simple maintenance would be helpful. Maybe how to use different kinds of sights like buckhorn, peep, ghost ring, marble arms bulls eye. Love that sight or I should say my eyes LoL. The bead on a shot gun also comes to mind. And don't forget to emphasize gun safety. Zero in a rifle or handgun if it has adjustable sights on it. Eye protection and ear protection. I would think a lot of newbies run out and got AR'S. Mine for example is a AR9 so my ammo matches my carry gun Beretta FS compact in 9mm.

Great video. Buffalo recommended your channel so here I am. I've had a 35 Remington Marlin 336 for somewhere around 10, maybe 12 years now. I really like the cartridge and after several boxes of factory ammo my plan was to handload for it (here in PA you can buy the ammo but it seems to be seasonal and it is expensive). I was low on funds so I bought the Lee Hand Press and...it did not go very well. So, with the price of ammo, I just never shot it anymore. Sometime after that I bought a proper press (a Lee single stage) but did not follow through. Now with the ammo shortage I have finally taken up the hobby properly (although I had to buy primers at 15 cents ea.) and have had a great time making 38 sp and 357 magnum rounds or my GP100 and Rossi 92. I think the 38 special has to be the best cartridge to learn handloading with. Soon I will try my hand at loading for the 35 Remington again. I say all this to say that I share your enthusiasm for the 35 Remington and lever guns and am hoping to get mine out regularly soon, so I am quite happy to find your channel.

But the rifle is in such good condition I decided what the heck I use it for hunting and maybe the occasional range session. As far as I was concerned it would put down a deer and it was just perfect. So I did the deal well later on after buying it I started to do some research on the cartridge. Come to find out it is indeed a loved round by the guys and girls who own them. It’s a Joy to reload for and as far as deer are concerned will just put them on the grill because it’s not only accurate it’s considered a thumper. Well George I would like to put in my two cents when it comes to newbies. I have taught a lot of kids how to shoot in my days. I know from how you handle a weapon that whoever taught you must have taught you one of the most important lessons of all and I am pretty sure you will do your best. My one and only pet peeve about teaching kids and anyone else how to handle a gun is first; the importance of the safety on a weapon and secondly as important is muzzle etiquette. If anyone learning about firearms learns these two most important lessons everything else will fall into place. These to me are the most critical things anyone handling a gun must learn first. I look forward to seeing how you teach these things, I know you will be a great teacher from the videos that I have watched so far. You shoot that old 35 pretty well. I bet your shoulder got a little sore. 50 years (70) old is no spring chicken.

That was a really fun video. Glad you watch WTW. Him and Paul both seem like really good down to earth guys. I was actually looking for videos on the 35 Remington when I found you. I have a 36C that is 1982 vintage, that I came across maybe 14 years ago. it had sat there a good while in my local gun shop. People had passed it by, because it wasn't calibered in 30-30, and most hunters in my area weren't familiar with a 35. I did some research on it, and next time I was by there, it was still sitting in the same spot. I told him I was interested, and he said, I will make you a deal you cant refuse, if you will buy it today. It's been here too long. So, he did, and I took it home. Never regretted that decision. My "JM' Marlin 336SC "Waffle Top" is in .30-30 and has Microgroove rifling. And just to share my "Marlin Gives Me A Headache Sometimes" virus with you, I've seen several Kmart brand (Kmart stamped into the barrel) 336s over the last ten or so years that were chambered in .30-30 and .35 that were ALSO in the Short Carbine/Sporting Carbine configuration ( with SC stamped into their barrels along with the "JM" marking). It also appears that those Kmart carbines varied, depending on the round they were chambered in, with .30-30s having Microgroove rifling while the .35s had Ballard rifling. Supposedly there is one VERY rare 336SC chambering out there, though I have never owned, seen, nor handled one myself, in .32 Winchester Special which, if they actually exist, came with Ballard rifling. I don't know about anyone else, but I do get a chuckle out folks who have never even heard of a "Waffle Top" in any caliber or name brand who ask how I managed to find AND afford such a rare Marlin that made it out of the factory without being drilled and tapped for a scope. Five years ago I paid the original purchaser $300.00 for my SC and have enjoyed hunting deer with it here in our home state of South Carolina. And by the way, I have several good friends who make no secret that they want my 336SC....They want it a lot....Now all I have to do is decide which one of them will get it in my will....Assuming I'm not buried with it.

Don't know how much detail you wanna go into for the newbies. But you may have to get real basic i.e. which way cartridges are pointed in a mag and stuff like that. It may sound insulting or condescending to people who know. But some just don't have a clue. When I was going through basic in '77 we had a guy in our platoon who managed to load 3 rounds backwards into an M16 mag. He also had a malfunction of some sort and looked down the barrel from the muzzle end. He had a very bad couple of days. I witnessed both.

Great thoughts. I do plan for this to be basic stuff, at least at first, just for the brand new shooter or gun owner wanna bee.

Thanks for the vids. Marlin fan here, and nice to see on YT. I have a 336CS in 30-30 with micro groove. Are you saying regular rifling is better? Is that because it is deeper?
As for 'newbies', I think realities and legalities would be real good to cover, along with shooting basics. So much misinformation out there on ballistics, etc., and WAY too much assumed knowledge about legal issues.

Hi Nathan. The "standard" vs Micro-Groove argument only comes into play when you are shooting cast bullets. With MG rifling you need to carefully select cast bullets that are .001"-.002" larger in diameter than the actual measured groove diameter of your rifle. Otherwise MG is great. I will post a vid in the next few week comparing two vintage Marlins. This one with Ballard style rifling and a 1958 version with MG rifling. Stay tuned for that.

@@TargetSuite Thank you. Look forward to it. My 336 has always shot great with 170 grain jacketed softpoints. At least for hunting purposes. A pie plate at 100 yds is no problem, even offhand. Info on MG vs ballard is interesting.

Waffle tops were designed to displace bright light from the shooters eye before scopes became common. I bet this rifle is not tapped for scope bases. If you want to put this caliber on steroids use LeverEvolution .45 grains. Any 200 grain round nose will do. Do not use flex tip Hornady, the body is elongated and take up to much space in the case. 35 cal. Is great for cast. I’m as old as you. Born in same year. 35 caliber are great performers. Thanx

I've tried that very load. It came from Loadata.com. Velocity was impressive, but I didn't shoot for groups. I've tried the FTX bullets in several cartridges. Always got a downrange velocity boost, but overall it always came in "second".
