When he heard me say, “You’re a positive motivating force within my life,” he got this quizzical smile on his face, like how? The syllables and the notes - he goes, say that again? Then he sort of nodded his head like, yeah, that’s pretty good.
having listened to frank version probably 100 times, this is my first time listening to the original. it's like a breath of cool fresh air. his voice is so smooth and the instrumentation is so calming, the e-piano is so nice. I love hearing "let me know"
In Aaliyah version the instrumentals are much better and more refined she took a good song and made it better and l myself could do it even better and one day l will.

Am I a horrible person if I actually think Aaliyah did a better version of this song? I mean I love both but Aaliyah's voice just sounds so ethereal and other worldly... It makes you feel like what I imagine being high on ecstasy feels like. She has the same chill, relaxed, ethereal vibe on "Rock the Boat" too.
Everyone has a preference so you're not horrible to think that. I prefer this version because the instrumentation is just beautiful. From the acoustic guitar guiding the melody the whole way, the soft electric riffs just fluttering like butterflies over the chorus, Ronald Isley's iconic one and falsetto and then remembering this song was written with their mother in mind - its just so beautiful from top to bottom. In saying that, "ethereal" is so perfect to describe Aaliyah's version. One of the greatest covers I've ever heard.

Am I a horrible person if I actually think Aaliyah did a better version of this song? I mean I love both but Aaliyah's voice just sounds so ethereal and other worldly... It makes you feel like what I imagine being high on ecstasy feels like. She has the same chill, relaxed, ethereal vibe on "Rock the Boat" too.
Everyone has a preference so you're not horrible to think that. I prefer this version because the instrumentation is just beautiful. From the acoustic guitar guiding the melody the whole way, the soft electric riffs just fluttering like butterflies over the chorus, Ronald Isley's iconic one and falsetto and then remembering this song was written with their mother in mind - its just so beautiful from top to bottom. In saying that, "ethereal" is so perfect to describe Aaliyah's version. One of the greatest covers I've ever heard.

This is magical! Ironically, I first heard Aliyah's (RIP) cover of this song in the 90s, and it blew me away. I love the Isley brothers.
