Saskatchewan's Most Notorious City | Prohibition Tunnels, Temple Gardens Spa + A Really Big Moose

  • Moose Jaw is the 4th largest city in Saskatchewan and has definitely seem some action in the early 1900's! It is most famous for its underground tunnels that go all throughout downtown that were initially used by Chinese immigrants and later taken over by the bootlegger criminals (allegedly led by the notorious criminal Al Capone) during prohibition. It is definitely one of the top places to visit in Saskatchewan, very tourist friendly and is a very charming small city. Hope you check it out!

I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

My family and I have been to Moose Jaw. The last time my Dad and I were only there. We wanted some place to eat so we asked the people in the car besides us. Really friendly people. They recommended a restaurant on the main street. Looked like a small place outside but it was pretty big on the inside. Sadly I don't remember the name. Also I heard there are public mineral pools. There are tours from other cities that go to Moose Jaw.

I just returned from a visit to Moose Jaw. I grew up there from 1949 to 1961 and wanted to trigger my happy childhood memories. I fell in love, again, with Cresent Park, Wakamow Valley, the historic buildings and the friendly people
We were not allowed to walk down River Street as a child, so I was fascinated to learn why when I did the Al Capone underground tour. Your video captures the essence of this fine little city, thank you !

It's unbelievable where everyone is busy with themselves, everyone is busy pampering their GF, BF, wife-husband, no one has time (I think they don't want) to give to those old parents who give us their all, our parents sacrificed a lot to qualify us, but sadly their contribution is forgotten after we qualify.
Salute to you, for taking care of your father and giving him such a wonderful time, many blessings and best wishes for you and your father.

Awesome! I'd like to know the name of the Bootlegger song you used in this video. Capone had quite a network. He ran rum from the Caribbean here to South Mississippi on Schooners, they hid from the Revenue Cutter Service in the bayous to unload the booze, then it was sent up the Mississippi River to Chicago. The Mob had tunnels they used there too!
Years ago, I found a recipe for the Canadian version of Shepard's Pie. It was ground hamburger, cheese, and mashed potatoes baked into a pie crust. That is what the railroads fed their construction workers from China and Quebec when they were building railways across Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 👍🇺🇸🇨🇦😊

Having lived in the "Provence" to the south of you (North Dakota), I spent a lot of time in Estevan and Weyburn,. I'm sure there was probably more bootlegging out of those two towns then Moose Jaw, but to each his own. I'm very positive you didn't head down that way. To bad, would of made a very good vlog. Next time I head up that way, I'll stop in for a Molson or a Moosehead, Ya know.......

In the 30's Weyburn and Estevan had populations of around 5 thousand, Moose jaw however had a population of 22 thousand, chances are it or Regina with 53 thousand saw more action.

Moose Jaw looks to be a city with lots of history and that tunnel attraction you went to definitely sounds educational. It's sad that the Chinese immigrants had to live under such horrible conditions but it's also interesting in its own way. The cafè you went to looks super nice and chill as well and the food you had looks yummy too! And the moose statue is about the most Canadian thing ever haha! And true, here in Norway there is a huge moose statue here in Norway, The Big Elk, and I read there was a battle between Canada and Norway about who had the bigger moose (A friendly battle, quite a hilarious one haha) but I think both statues look cool, no matter which one is the biggest. These videos travelling around with your dad are so wholesome, it's so cool to get to see different parts of Canada this way! :)

it's all a facade the tunnels were used for transporting coal to and from all the buildings during winter time and only one small block was used for Chinese inhabitation . Al Capone spent two years here Topps hiding from the cops with a friend who used the city for smuggling booze lol

Started watching the video and at 1:42 I saw this flag that seemed like the brazilian flag to me, but I looked closer and it wasn’t, but funny, wonder if they were inspired by it. Another cozy ride with the awesome company of your dad.

@@AlinaMcleod just read it here in wikipedia, it’s funny because it states that the green represents the northern forests of the province and gold the southern grain fields. Many people, even in Brazil, believe that green in our flag represents the forests and yellow the gold, but in reality green represented the portuguese royal family and gold the Habsburghs, because in the 19th century Brazil was a monarchy and the Emperor Pedro I, who proclaimed our Independence, got married with an austrian woman named Maria Leopoldina, and she was a member o the Habsburgh family. After the proclamation of the Republic, in the end of 19th century, the flag was changed a bit, but the green and yellow were preserved.

It was interesting to see a connection, with Al Capone. I'm originally from the Chicago area, so have heard so much about him. And I'm really impressed with your Dad, and his healthy eating habits. I tried for many years, to get my Dad to eat like that, before he finally passed away. It was not possible, and I couldn't get my siblings to insist he eat better. I came to the conclusion, people can't change their eating habits, at an old age. I saw in a previous video, how he would be drinking carrot juice, 2 or 3 times per day. Also like him, I first went to Ukraine, to meet and marry a Ukrainian girl, though things never materialized for me and her. Also, Coincidental, , my Mom was an only child, and raised by my step Grandfather.

Sorry to hear that. It is true that it's usually much harder to change habits the older you get. I guess that's why we all have to try and start as early as possible.

Thanks so much, Alina! You really covered a lot of history so far, I think we have learned 3 times more just by following you on this road trip. You are really taking advantage of having your Dad with you during this road trip. Listen to him, Alina...He has more knowledge than a lot of us thought he did. He cherishes his daughter, you are always going to be his little girl to him. Enjoyed this a great deal, the tunnels sound very interesting and creates a feeling actually being their to experience. Definitely a must for anyone who visits the area, you have opened up the real knowledge about Saskatchewan that I never realized. Stay safe, and keep smiling....I"m jealous of you now for actually doing this!!! Cheers!!! ❤😎
