This is how I make a lava lamp:
Add food coloring to a glass of water
Add some oil to the glass
Then pour a bunch of salt in the glass.
It looks SO COOL the salt and oil make it so the little bubble things sink to the bottom then float back up over and over again.
And you can reuse it over and over again by pouring in more salt.

  • @adriennecloeter7394

Some science: The "lava lamp" (and the milk one to some extent) is all about polar and non-polar molecules. Water is polar so it is good at breaking apart other things that are polar. Things that are nonpolar dissolve other nonpolar things. Grease, fats, and oils are all nonpolar, which is why they don't mix with water. Dish soap has parts that are polar (so it can mix with water) and parts that are non-polar (so that it can clean the grease off). As for why the lava lamp didn't work out well, the other channel must have been using tablets that fizz on their own. The reason the carbonated water worked to some extent is because there is some carbonic acid in it. The carbonic acid reacted with the anti-acid (i.e. basic) tablet and produced CO2. You basically did the lemon experiment under a layer of oil. My theory is that only small amounts of carbonic acid were able to come into contact with/react with the tablet at a time so it produced a lot of small bubbles instead of bigger ones. True lava lamps work via heat, but employ the same principle of polar and nonpolar molecules.

For the lava lamps it does work with just ordinary tap water you just have to break the tablet into smaller pieces first then drop them in. More surface area means more fizz.

better lava lamp: in a mason jar:
    -1/3 cup of baking soda
-fill nearly to top with oil
-1-1/2 tsp vinegar (colored with food coloring)
the colored vinegear will sink to the bottom in small bubbles and as they come into cantact with the soda, the Co2 will create bubbles which float up to come back down.

My son makes that newtonian fluid all the time. Quick clean up method is to leave it out overnight as it completely hardens and then you can just pop it in the trash can. I learned that be accident one day and although I hate not cleaning it up right away, I don't have to worry about liquid messes in the trash can.

We made this once in my chemistry club (the first) and put in food coloring too. Our teachers said that it would dye our hands blue but we didn't care. After that our hands were super dyed. Well... Two of us had the first meeting for the Christmas play later that day. So our teacher gave us special soap to get it off 😅😂

The lemon/soda experiment may be more impressive if you squeeze the juice onto a smaller plate or into a cereal bowl. More juice would be "used" by the soda. I know it bubbles like crazy when I’m making tomato soup from scratch. The baking soda is added to the tomatoes in the pan before other ingredients or it will overflow.
