I think the next part will be better. Many new writers struggle with balancing elements while creating a big story. I'm surprised by how little I cared about the side characters, especially considering the writer's previous movie, where despite it being a biopic you care about sub plots happening outside of the story it is based on. Hopefully, the next one improves. I rate it 7.5/10 I rated it slightly higher because they nailed the tone of mythology.
Yeah. handling big projects is hard because there's so much to handle. Film makers lose the grip on the story flow along the process. I’ll get around to it whenever I can on streaming. I haven’t seen an Indian film since January since I was kinda drained after the last 4 that I saw in one single week, so I’m kinda hoping this sparks some kind of interest in me again.

They really did amazingly with the budget and practical sets. So Sean did you watch in original Telegu or Hindi dub? I watched both and noted the subtitles in English did not translate well in the Hindi version. The telugu version flowed better and the tonal shifts and translation were perfect.
Ashwatthama, portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan in Kalki 2898 AD, was outstanding. While I am not a fan of his body of work, I was truly in awe of his performance. However, I believe the de-aged Ashwatthama could have been more effective with Abhishek Bachchan in the role instead of relying on subpar visual effects. Hopefully, this is addressed in future films.
10:11 Your frustration is justified BUT yes his fans from south India needed that stylized elevation for the lead character and yes that caused a lot of lag in first half, several other scenes could have been chopped down. However certain other reviewers were convinced that his character was being built for the surprised climax to even out.
U gave a reason why not appreciate the film, just because u have a star doesnt mean u change movie and stuff, a directors goal is supposed to make a good movie not satisfy fans, this why we cant compete with other film industries like korea/japan before Hollywood
it written in hindu puran (old history and knowledge books)that in kaliyuga people become more selfish that why emotion for pragnet lady, boy selling his sister for money that happens in film because that area is ghor kalyug...

@@dheeraj8862 not their fault. the movie was marketed as a big post apocalyptic sci fi. Even the climax felt like star wars and black panther fusion. seriously this is first time im seeing most of Hollywood people taking about this movie, its proud moment for indian cinema, started with Bahubali , RRR , Kgf and now this
Ashwathaama's stone taking off by krishna was already in the mahabharata . It is genuinely not copied. Actually make a video about avatar movie and say "Avatar name is copied from our puranas and upanishads etc." Your are saying these scence are copied . So is the speed of light in suryasidhanta 299792453 metre/second copied by the forigners?(present 299792458 metre/second ) only 5 m/s difference
So true, felt the same even as a native Indian film watcher. The film picks up only post interval. In the first half, scenes were too long drawn and the tonal changes absurd. That random song with Disha Patani in between did not help.
Am i the only one who enjoyed the first half... Yeah i get it... pacing was a bit off but man what a build up... I agree prabhas' scenes were cheesy and intro was stretched too much but other than that this movie is the best we've got (in india) this year, as it showcases our history on a grand scale and fill us up with emotions. It'll probably break tons of records...really looking forward to continuation of the Kalki universe
FYI the actor, Amitabh Bachchan, who played Ashwatthama was also cameo-ed in The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Tobey Maguire. Ps: He ate Caprio!
The western reviewers are calling it rebel moon to market it for the western people, but It's actually nothing like rebel moon, but yes It's a mix of indian mythology, to us It's our history added to some sci fi element, it connects to the ancient epic mahabharata and talks about the incarnation of lord vishnu who will again appear in future to end all sins in future, thus connectiong ancient hindu scriptures with a futuristic sci fi world of what if
My suggestion to you is studying Mahabharata entire story to know about the mythical characters involved in the movie, trust me you will enjoy it thoroughly the characters, their relations, circumstances and consequences. Have fun
Watched it today. Found it to be very flawed but at the time a huge step forward for Indian Cinema. The first half could've been 30-40 minutes easily and that time could've been put into character development. But even with all of its flaws, it is praise worthy.
Perfect review! I agree with all your points. I was so angry when they started joking in the first half with cringe jokes and dialogs. If only prabhas was skipped, this movie would be 100 times better. Everytime he came on screen i was frustrated. The first action sequence took like 15 minutes and every few punches he stood up with music in the background like he just entered. Super frustrating. But I loved the plot, deepika, Amitabh, resistance area. It was great. I felt dialogue writing could have been much better with some wise quotes from ashwathama but he barely spoke the whole movie. Still, Indian cinema is progressing in the right direction now! I stopped watching bollywood movies 8 years back as they were curated for uneducated and horny public with actresses only used as sexual objects and actors treated like Gods with logic defying action. Now I might start watching again!
I said this to my husband yesterday after watching the film. Take Prabhas out of the film and you have a pretty good film. This film has enough going for it that it didn’t need even one scene that Prabhas was in. I enjoyed the movie in every part Prabhas was not in.
Kalki 2898 is a fictional story which took the prophecy of our Lord Vishnu's 10 Avatar the film doesn't represent the actual prophecy of the Kalki Puran the book of prophecy of the future
How are foreigners understanding this movie without knowing Mahabharatha and its characters. Like what is the Kalki prophecy? What is kali yuga?Seems like that would be a shallow connection. Its like young me watching batman for first time and saying who is this clown in a suit. Now adult me will defend Batman with life, he is the "Dark Knight". Yeah you can enjoy technical aspects, try to follow the story, read the subtitle, but you wont feel the same way how Indians watch it. As an Indian this film is 9/10. If i was a forreigner if would be 6/10.

I am so happy with this review, the movie could easily have been 30 minutes shorter with even more scenes from Mahabharat, and trust me, Sean, you would love a full feature-length trilogy on Mahabharat. although it's about a war that goes on for only 18 days, there is so much back story to it that one movie won't cut it.
I think they could have make the kali yuga the time they sre living in more accurate to the scriptures and mix with sci fi but it would get too darl and r rated. Same goes for the villian kali purusha His origin is also very dark.
If you wanted to learn more about the lore of this movie...you have to read The Mahabharata the hindu epic tale like the Greek The Iliad and The Odessey but it is so much more than that...like all Indians we have grew up on the tales of Mahabharat and unlike other religious texts and stories Mahabharat stands out because its not a good vs evil story..its story about deeply flawed human beings...the heroes of the tale make terrible decisions sometimes and the villains make noblest of decisions sometimes...and the entire story spans six generations of kings and their dynasty resulting game of thrones level treachery and deciet along with divine magical elements and ending in an epic battle between kin between brothers, between grandfathers, fathers and sons between friends and rivals...its a bloodbath and bcoz you love characters from both the heroes side and villains side, you dont know who to root for..and you got just the taste of that Mahabharat battle in flashback sequence where Ashwathama (the old guy) in the movie was telling about fiercest warrior he faced Arjuna (from the heroes side) who was his father's greatest student and his rival...fighting Karna(who was revealed to be Bhairava) who is actually Arjuna's blood brother who was given away by their mother and got adopted and raised by other family but in the battle they have to battle it out..and in the movie it looked glorious

Dude, you missed the epic characters Amarendra Baahubali and Mahendra Baabubali portrayed by Prabhas in Baahubali 1 and 2 movies. I highly recommend you watch these movies on line to truly appreciate Prabhas as an actor and action hero.
First half was really boring ...that's true prabhas character intro was to long disha patani comes n goes for a song but she coming for that scene was a giving some room to breath or else it was just prabhas and that robot his never ending dream of going into complex
People are saying the first half was too long, but i think that in order to explain the characters and setting up the world building and motivations behind the actions of every character, the long first half was necessary. This was exactly the difference between joss whedon and Zack snyder versions of Justice League, we obviously know which one was better.
It was long because of the long intro scene of bhairava and the random songs they added in the Complex scene, could have instead used some of that time to explore the world more

Hindu Mythology? Why the f**k everyone always keeps saying Hindu/Indian Mythology. I have never heard anyone ever call Abrahmic books (Bible/Koran) being called Middle Eastern Mythology or Middle Easter/European history books being called Middle Easten/European Mythologies. Why this difference?
The idea this movie was written about is based on Indian historical text called Mahabharata, our historical text and Kalki Puran, which prophesied the last coming of savior of humanity. This was written way before Judeo-Christian texts and not comparable to Hollywood which is pure fiction.
More epic than Dune and 10 times more fun. Can't wait til US audiences, especially Black audiences, finally discover and start to appreciate this genre.
Fight scenes were dragged on to long. And the whole cool badass guy who likes to sleep and is lazy and selfish seemed a bit exhaustive, trying to hard to come off as masculine but actually came out as annoying. It’s a trend with certain Indian films where the main male character try to overcompensate masculineness with being a do****bag. Also Indian languages are so beautiful, it’s a huge turn off when they speak mixture of English, again trying to overcompensate and seem cool and modern. Women’s characters seemed a bit dull, the whole mother figure/ damsel in distress trope is a bit dull to me but I understand this film is largely catered to young Indian men who are drawn to such female characters. But the Mahabharata scenes were incredibly beautiful and I love learning about Indian folklore and religious stories. They’re quite fascinating. The scenes of Ashwathama were great. There are some beautiful, moving scenes in the movie, but could not enjoy it completely because of some of the excessive scenes of Phraba’s character. He is fun though. I do love the world building and love forward to more of it in the sequels…
You have to understand Induan Cinema, After Story, it is entirely run on Actors and Actresses, in a mass cinema, we want to see our favourite celebs do their iconic scenes in every movie, so to keep the audience happy in a mass cinema, the director has to give those masala scenes in the movie which was the first part of Kalki 2898 AD, and in the second half, director was like "Had your fun? Now listen to the story!" Also about the story plot or storyline, yeah there is an evil entity and organisations exploiting the world and rebels forming up against them, then the messiah etc, these are worldwide phenomenon as you pointed out, and this was all written into our scriptures 1000's of years ago, this is Kali Yug (Era of Kali), whatever bad, evil, stanic is happening in our world is supposed to happen, hunanity is supposed to turn corrupt and destructive, because this is the time that God will vanish from our beliefs and culture, which is when he will have to fall again from heaven to earth, to re-establish Dharma, Indian history and culture connects and spans across millennia and shows our history, future and the science behind everything. Check it out.
The funny guy was also in bahubali, i hope u have watched that movie. If not u are way back from other foreigner reaction channel. Hard recommendation...

The movie in the first half is actually showing what it will be in the future.. that people will be extremely selfish in the future.. so ofcourse, The common people dont care about kids or women who are pregnant and dont care if they are being killed.. and yes, they would still crack jokes after that.. because they only care about their life.. This is happening even now in many places.. Like there are so many accidents happening around the world but For exmaple, people on youtube just make reaction videos of movies.. and only talk about it rather than actively doign anything about it... Isnt this selfishness? About the egg scene, It is a depiction that even a small egg needs to be earned and it is very exclusive.. All of this is written and told by lord srikrishna in bhagavadgeetha that kali yuga.. or the future will be like this.. even though, the fight scene in the begining is dragging, all other part make sense.. unlike hollywood movies.
1st half was slow, had unwanted scenes and long. The world building went with the dialogues and we had a chunk of scenes can be removed. But, since it's starting off a cinematic universe, might make sense in future
A lot of people a saying its not mythology. Ofc, religious people will think its not. I love Mahabharat, but it is mythology for me as a Hindu. Its a great lore, with stories and morals which are evergreen and explain the human condition till date. So yeah, you don't have to get caught up in it.
10:53 Ur point is right. That romance scenes were trash. And about that comedy part telegu people enjoyed them cause it was very enjoyable in their language while it ruined when the language turned into hindi or English. So far, this is the best & most articulate review I've seen from outside India.
Agreed with nost of your points. I too felt that the movie took too long to get on track. But hey, im not complainjng after watching rebel moon😂
@@Fsinthechat10 🤣
Way better than Rebel moon
a low bar to achieve..this movie was mid but rebel moon was hot garbage
@josephbasha1926 it wasn't mid but 1st half was torcher.
@@divineflu34567 ya a movie should be treated as a whole..the first half tested my patience so much and the episode with annaben and her lover...these things should have been cut and interesting(those that are connected with our mythology)characters such as Kali, ashwathama should've been fleshed out..
I didn't even care 2 fucks for sum80..she was just there in the second half and acted like every other stupid damsel in distress archetype...and I couldn't accept prabAss as my 🐐 karna...they didn't revive him from the death to be bhairava such an ass character and he doesn't look the part.
I agree here @@josephbasha1926
I think the next part will be better. Many new writers struggle with balancing elements while creating a big story. I'm surprised by how little I cared about the side characters, especially considering the writer's previous movie, where despite it being a biopic you care about sub plots happening outside of the story it is based on. Hopefully, the next one improves.
I rate it 7.5/10
I rated it slightly higher because they nailed the tone of mythology.
Yeah. handling big projects is hard because there's so much to handle. Film makers lose the grip on the story flow along the process. Nag Aswin is an amazing director, he definitely will improve in the next movies. I am quite surprised a guy made this movie who only has 2 movies experience.
Also, don't forget he is shooting a fight scene for the first time
7.5/10 is a fair rating
I’ll get around to it whenever I can on streaming. I haven’t seen an Indian film since January since I was kinda drained after the last 4 that I saw in one single week, so I’m kinda hoping this sparks some kind of interest in me again.

You should have seen bahubali by prabhas you will definitely become his fan .

Bro if you have to explore Mahabharat an Indian epic to know more about this world. It's a continuation of that epic
Apprecaite it
How will he do that there very few ways to do that we need a dedicated movie on Mahabharata

Prabhas's introductory fight could have been shorter, no need of disha patani scenes
@@vikashpal4875they need the hot girl to keep the watchers in
Am i the only one who enjoyed the first half...
I loved those Mahabharat sequences and the cameo of my favourite actor and actress 😁♥️.

@@SeanChandlerTalksAboutyou don't have to study them all just hear the explanation from TH-cam. But it's on you if you have so much time🫠
Watched it today.
Egg is not a silly thing in this world... It is a luxury though it may be funny for audience that is watching movie in 2024
How are foreigners understanding this movie without knowing Mahabharatha and its characters.
Although Hollywood used the concept 1st in the movies but it is already existed in Hinduism even before judaism started the concept of it.

Same goes for the villian kali purusha
His origin is also very dark.

Its not from Judao Christian but it took the reference of Hindu history which goes way back to 4000 years. No other religion exist back then on this planet though.
Kalki 2898 AD is the best Indian movie of all time. As an Indian i am proud of this movie. The level of visuals in this movie is absolutely just crazy and seriously awesome.
I think it's a consensus that the first half was weaker compared to the second half. Indian reviewers have the same opinion.
Dude, you missed the epic characters Amarendra Baahubali and Mahendra Baabubali portrayed by Prabhas in Baahubali 1 and 2 movies. I highly recommend you watch these movies on line to truly appreciate Prabhas as an actor and action hero.
Though its costliest Indian movie , it’s fraction of budget when compared to Hollywood counterparts.
12:10 idk if this is an editing problem or what
Yep...whoops!

What a movie, I got goosebumps 🔥
Ashwatthama has been played by Amitabh Bachchan who had appeared in The Great Gatsby starring Leo and Tobey.
Now listen to the story!"
Also about the story plot or storyline, yeah there is an evil entity and organisations exploiting the world and rebels forming up against them, then the messiah etc, these are worldwide phenomenon as you pointed out, and this was all written into our scriptures 1000's of years ago, this is Kali Yug (Era of Kali), whatever bad, evil, stanic is happening in our world is supposed to happen, hunanity is supposed to turn corrupt and destructive, because this is the time that God will vanish from our beliefs and culture, which is when he will have to fall again from heaven to earth, to re-establish Dharma, Indian history and culture connects and spans across millennia and shows our history, future and the science behind everything. Check it out.

plz dont it mythology ,kalki is inspired from mahabharat which is our religion ,its just that India is last living pagan country older than norse pagan vikings so we have many gods but cant call it mythology coz we have many gods ,how would u feel if we called Christianity or jeasus christ as mythology?
The whole Hollywood superheroes things have been copied from Indian history and mythology.
You should watch the movie Maharaja. It's really good. It's coming out in a film festival.
And people r talking bout prabhass's dumbass behavior then i would say that this was needed because when it was revealed that he is descendants of karna then it was full of goosebumps. That's why.

The Creator's pro-AI message was disgusting
Well we don't expect the foreign audiance to be able to connect with its story as much as we Indians do, and that's okay because you aren't familiar with me epic Mahabharata, maybe just heard about it somewhere..or not, but epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata are engrained in us ... We remember it's every moment by heart... So this movie, which is a based on Mahabharat's characters, just don't need an introduction, for us
