Damn dude, I can't even begin to tell you just how helpful this was. Been jumping round like a mad man for the last 5 hours not knowing what the hell was going on. subbed.
Now that I think of it, I should probably clear why this is important: Sometimes, you'll save dust around you for either heals, or to lure the monster to a spot with multiple clouds, then attack. However, if a Flash pod is used (Not sure yet if a teammate's flash will effect it just yet, haven't payed attention to that), it will detonate all of them. This could be either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on where the monster, your team, and the dust clouds are located at the time. Hope this was a good enough explanation for everyone.
Other player's flashpods also detonates the dust aswell. But nothing you can do about it when you're in a party, because other people don't care about it. I only go for the sweet nitro moth so everyone can use flashpods anytime, as the dust does hurt the monster alot, and it comes really handy for other people to use flash!
Guess this makes some good sync with the flashfly cage for your Palico then, as they'll plant free flashes for you to use rather frequently to activate the dust and blind the monster.
Worth mentioning: you can use your kinsect to trigger bombs and falling boulders. With a high speed kinsect it actually travels faster than a slinger stone, meaning you have a better chance of triggering an environmental trap while the monster is still under it.
I suggest doing some rebinds on this especially with aiming the Kinsect using the C or V key, these keys are awkard to hit, so i suggest rebinding so that it's on an easier to access key. I have mine dual bound on both the original key, and MB4 which works well for me.
Favorite weapon in the series. It's so satisfying flying in the air when a wyvern won't land. Match that with a Blast Kinsect and you're fireworks incarnate.
One quick essence gathering tip: When you send your kinsect out it travels a set distance. If you're having a hard time reaching a particular buff (i.e. Orange buff from Bazel's back in this video), take some time familiarizing yourself with the distance your kinsect travels from sending it out from you. Then, once you have a general feel for how far that distance is, instead of just aiming for Bazel's back, aim *way* above it with plenty of room for clearing the monster and send it out with L2 + Triangle, then once your Kinsect is above Bazel, aim at the ground by his feet and direct your kinsect with L2 + Triangle again. Your kinsect will attempt to reach the point you're aiming at by traveling in a straight line. From directly above, you're much more likely to hit his back and get the essence you're going for, in this example. This technique takes a little longer travel time technically than just hitting to part you want first try and calling your kinsect back, but in situations where you don't have an easy line of sight always on the part you want to extract from, this technique of Kinsect directing will lessen some of your headache.
Small thing, if people still use this video as the extremely helpful guide it is: When doing the air dance hits, you never bounce of monster scales or hide. So even though you're fighting Barroth, Nergigante etc, no matter what sharpness you're at, you don't bounce off and can complete your combo.
Oh you mean your weapon doesn't bounce of during attacks XD Ive read this a few times and only finally understood you meant your attacks dont bounce of mid air not that you don't bounce into the air with the final air dance hit

Also didn't mention the thrust attack you can do after the circle combo finisher by pressing triangle. My bread and butter infinite combo with the glaive in MHW has always been circle + circle + triangle rather than triangle + triangle + circle.
You can also combo this into the initial triangle attack and then another backward leaping slash, which in certain situations is another helpful kind of infinite combo.
The work you guys do has certainly made my Monster Hunter skills even better, and have helped me try other weapons I wouldn't have originally even thought of. It is bittersweet that these weapon tutorials have come to an end
one piece of criticism I have for how you use the glaive is that you dont use the insect mark enough. it is insane how useful it is to mark an area for your kinsect to attack, especially if done in strategic areas. for example, if I already have the triple buff I'll usually mark the monsters tail, that way my kinsect would follow and attack the monsters tail, building up that sever damage, and it comes with the added benefit of recovering some of my health when my insect runs out of stamina and returns to me. if you have a blunt insect you could mark the monsters head and build up that stun damage, and if timed correctly the insect could return to you with a red buff as soon as your current one runs out. and even if you werent concerned with that stuff too much, you could just get a high attack power kinsect and then mark any random spot on the monster and let the insect add to your overall DPS, you could never go wrong with that. basically what Im saying is that marking an area on a monster for your insect to attack is highly under utilized and should be implemented into regular glaive play, as it not only increases your overall DPS, but it increases your dust cloud usage by a wide margin, and can grant you and your team some really good personal benefits. after getting your buffs, marking the monster should always be your very next step before going into the melee yourself.
Also worth noting that if you don't have an opening to attack and your Kinsect's stamina is starting to run low, you can spam the recall/collect actions a few times to quickly bring its stamina back up to full. Very, very useful for status builds since this means you can have clouds almost constantly generating. Stack a status across your weapon, Kinsect, and Palico, and use this any chance you get, and you'll be a status-applying monster. It's less of a hard rule and more just something to do when the stars align to give you an opening to do it, but still very much worth explaining on its own.
I'm really happy to see even after all this time, Arekkz still has the top suggested videos for learning MH weapons. I keep checking back on these videos periodically when I decide to use a different weapon. Those vertical strikes from the IG are fantastic for taking tails. But yes, being a air fighter is where the fun is at with this weapon. The general damage output for this weapon is pretty solid considering how quickly it hits. It's a better weapon than I thought it was when I first started playing MHW.
I'm not saying the game is dead. I was simply saying in relative terms, the playerbase has gone down massively. The view count for this video vs Arekkz's earlier videos (closer to when the game released) shows that the demand for MH videos isn't there anymore. Now I know Arekkz is a hardcore MH player/YTer but it should take him 4 months to release a basic weapon tutorial. Who is this helping? If you didn't know how to use the KB by now? It was my main months ago and i looked forward to Arekkz releasing a tutorial on it and I kept checking back to see if had released one but he hadn't until now? Too slow man. If you are still playing the game and enjoying it with friends then more power to you. But my comment was more aimed towards Arekkzs timing on releasing this tutorial more than anything, right now its not the time to release weapon tutorials.... that was months ago dude.
Wow..... I've been using this thing wrong throughout my 100 hours of playing this game! Look, hear me out, I'm really new to these types of games. I really didn't wanna read all the instructions and shit so, I just figured "we'll all you do in every other RPG Is just Hit Dodge Hit Dodge and repeat, so I'll just do that". I ended up picking the glaive cause it looked cool, but once I started using it, I fell in love with the jump mechanic. It was all I would use. As you probably figured by now it sucked to do that all the time. It was bad damage along with the the fact i never ate a meal, ever, and the fact I didn't go for good skill in armor I only went for looks. I ended up hating the game for my own incompetence, but now I can't stop playing. Don't be me. Please read all the instructions given to you! Thanks.
Haha so me. I have just been mashing my glaive attacks along with my kinsect but after seeing this video i was dumbfounded how things sre supposed to work haha
Everyone is talking about the backflip circle attack, but something equally useful is that the poke is an animation cancel for the heavy circle attack.
Finally someone mentions the jump limit, every tutorial Ive seen says you can stay in the air as long as you have stamina and I found out about the limit through testing (luckily not in the middle of a hunt)
I'd recomnend protective polish for any IG build if you have it. IG loses sharpness faster than any other weapon except dual blades due to rapid hits and long attack chains.
@@BorisTheGoose92 protective polish is preferable, but razor sharp also works very well, and since xeno set gives you both that and effect prolonger with plenty of gem slots to gem in attack or elemental attack, it's a really good choice to use in IG.
Just got this game and this was my first choice weapon. Watched all the little weapon intro vids and the aerial capability seemed like a must have fighting giant monsters.

I’ve been an Insect Glaive Main since I started this game at launch. It’s my favorite weapon and even so, I’m still watching this video because I love your content and tutorials!
I come back to this video from time to time because it thought me so much about my favourite weapon, that was also my first weapon main. It’s also a nice refresher to hear about what all the extracts do, since the only one I remember is red.
So I just started playing MHW and I chose this weapon because the name intrigued me. Day 1 found me not understanding a GD thing about this, then second day I learned vaulting which made me fall in love, so I looked this up and you have caused my mind to do the universe expansion explosion. Thank you, really looking forward to tearing through fights with this info.
This helps a lottt. This was the weapon I started out with and I was getting my butt kicked and I knew I was definitely using wrong. Now I know what to do and I'm starting to complete hunts.
A new tip based off other guide videos (for iceborne with new claw mechanic) is to save mount for when monster is enraged, so you want to wall smash with claw at the start for more damage. Typically you only get 2-3 mounts per monster hunt based on the mounting damage threshold.
Am I the only one weirded out Arekkz didn't include the option you have to retreat: left joystick backwards + circle? It's great for evading and repositioning Also, I find t interesting my go-to combo is so different, for any interested here it is: Circle (triangle if sheathed) -> R2 -> triangle (after R2 you get a nice extra hit) -> triangle x2 -> circle -> triangle (cancel long animation with a quick stab) -> back + circle (to reset my position should I want to)
MrIzumi224 You can use any combo you like. He just showed the best combos. It is in fact proven tri, tri, circle repeat is the most dps a Glaive can do. However most people use triangle then circle over and over. It's almost the same damage but has huge stagger/server potential. If your moving forward it would then be forward triangke, O, O. Until a Mon goes down or after a mount for big damage if sheathed it would be foward triangle, into R2, into infinite combo, or triangle circle combo. By using the back evade hit even tho it deals damage it's almost always a damage lose. All of this doesn't really matter tho. If you don't speed run it's not gonna change the time of your hunts by that much so just have fun and play how you like.
I know how to play most of the the weapons by now, but I still watch your videos because they're simply entertaining to watch, great job on these vids man. 😃😃😃😃😃

indeed. this guy is what persuaded me that I'm not completely vulnerable in GS after all. still use the old insect glaive around new monsters, they are much too unpredictable for me to go in without a high-agility toy
just wanted to note out that the aerial back flip is a very handy/evasive move that you can pull of on the insect glaive by (i think) pressing backwards +O , which i think you may have forgotten to mention, otherwise, excellent tutorial as always. Cant wait for whats coming up on your channel.

Hey ! Small thing I discovered today, when latched onto a wall using an IG leap, you can press Forward and X (or whatever is your Dodge button) to make a jump upward, rather than leaping off the wall and back onto it like you showed. ^^
You missed that attack in which you’d do a backward leaping slash. It’s a nice attack for repositioning and getting out of harms way. I believe you can also run up to climbable vines with your weapons drawn and climb them normally without putting away the glaive.
Meta4z Not wall run. Climb. If you continue to push forward after attaching onto a climbable surface, you’ll just climb normally but with your glaive out.
Finally! This was the one I was most looking forward to since it’s the weapon I most wanted to learn when I started playing world. Also,unless I’m mistaken, I think you forgot to mention the “retreating slash” (or at least that’s what I call it) where after inputting triangle if you hold back and circle I think you perform a cartwheel backwards. I normally would use it to extend my combos before I end with the big circle attack
Finally the tutorial for the weapon I gravitated towards when I started playing the game but didn't know anything about. Luckily now I do and I'm going to have great times with this. I do have a question about Mixed Set Monday though. In MHW I'm currently running with a build that I got from another TH-camr but the set is amazing for beginners as you can make mistakes without them costing you and your team the hunt. So with this in mind can I submit the set for Mixed Set Monday but with full credit going to the TH-camr in question or is this a no go????
Quick tip: if you are mounted a monster and it moves over to a wall you can run on (like the ropes around the trees in the arena) to try to knock you off, if you knock it down while it’s next to those surfaces you can point the joystick towards the walls to initiate a run midair, which allows you to do a downward strike on the fallen monster instead of having to fall to the ground and get up and whatever. This is especially useful if the monster is flying
I know I'm late to this (I decided to start using an insect glaive today after playing hammer and longsword for 90% of the time since mhw came out on PS4) but this has been extremely helpful. I haven't checked if you've done a video on the dragon soul kinsect, though it probably isn't necessary since it seems in line with what you've shown here. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for all the info here, and I'll definitely be watching the rest of this series, even if I think I've mastered the hammer and longsword. There's always something new to learn and I know if they're as helpful as this video was, I'll pick up something useful. Thanks again, great video.
The insect glaive is one of my favorite weapons. I never did the ground attack as much. But now I will try to add it in my battle strategy. I usually try to aerial attack. Awesome video. Thanks for the tutorial.
You forgot to mention that after most moves, you can press Back+O to do a backflip slash. It doesn't deal much damage, but it's good for repositioning. Also, when jumping up walls, you only have to press Forward+X and you'll scale the wall and latch back on automatically. You'll scale the wall faster with White Extract, which also makes it faster than normally climbing. If you run out of stamina while climbing walls this way, just sit there for a sec and it'll restore.

Thank goodness for this video. All I was doing is air attacks lol, just started playing for the first time and really love this weapon so far. So glad I took the time to learn more with this video. Can't wait to try it after work 😁
Generally, I'd say red extract comes from the parts the monster uses to attack you, white for movement like you said and orange and green depend. Now when a monster uses his legs to attack too, generally, it will be a source of white extract and the red will be applied to other areas. But I have noticed that monsters that attack with their legs but have wings will have red extract in the legs and white in the wings. Tell me if I'm wrong somewhere, but I think it's about it.^^
My loose rule of thumb: Primary physical damage = Red Primary movement = white Alternative/elemental damage = orange Then if all extract types are covered prior, tail = green I can't think of a head that wasn't red, wings/legs are mostly white, and if the tail is green, good luck finding the orange (usually stomach/back in those cases, but quite a few exceptions)
One thing to note about clinging to climbable/runnable surfaces is that if you input forward on the stick and X you can jump up and climb much faster than what was shown in the video. It is a very fast way to climb vines without much stamina use.
I can't believe I never knew about the wall grab after a vault! Also a minor detail but the L2+R2 shot where you mark the monster for your kinsect to attack is great for detonating barrels.
I made this for myself, a pc player. sorry if it doesn’t make much sense but here’s some translations, hopefully it helps someone: R2=ctrl(mb1 for me) X=jump Triangle=lmb Circle=rmb L2=C **basic combos** lmb + lmb + lmb=weaker triple thrust w+lmb=forward thrust rmb+rmb= side swept and overhead smash- buffed version, very important move w+rmb=leaping slash, covers good ground and good for getting an opening w+rmb(sheathed)= same attack s+rmb=slash backward, good for reposition after final rmb attack ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **vaulting combos** mb1+jump=vault (can go backwards) mb1+jump=vault jump slash (mounting damage) mb1+jump+jump= evasive vault mb1+jump+rmb= vaulting slash forward (if it hits, vaults up again up to 4 times or until stamina is drained) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **kinsect commands** c+lmb=fire kinsect where aiming, marks the spot, gets buff and gives cloud. according to certain kinsect, the cloud will explode with its specialty. also continues to attack until drained of stam or recalled mb1+lmb=gets buff c+rmb=recall kinsect and gives it stamina+gives you extract if you successfully hit your mark mb1= get extract close range, good when finishing combos ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **kinsect buffs** red comes from monsters head white comes from legs or wings orange comes from chest or back green comes from tail red: 90 seconds, better, more damaging combos (always want to atleast have the red buff active) white: 120 seconds, movement speed and jump height orange: 150 seconds, minor knock back resistance green: small potion-like heal red+white active: 85 seconds, improved attack animations and movement speed buffs+8% attack increase orange+white: knock back prevention and movement speed buff red+white+orange: all of the above+12% attack boost ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **buffed combos** lmb+lmb+lmb=triple slash, more hits in the combo and attacks faster w+lmb= strong forward thrust rmb+rmb=strong wide sweep into a tornado slash, and this final hit is one of your most powerful attacks lmb+lmb+rmb= good infinite combo that attacks fast ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **buffed vault combos** mb1+jump+lmb=jumping slash that hits multiple times on the way down, great for mounting mb1+jump+rmb= strong advancing slashes, final hit does mount damage ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **aerial combos** *sliding down hill* lmb+lmb=jumping advancing slash or strong version, and if it connects it vaults you up *jumping off cliff, climbing up wall and jumping* lmb= strong jumping slash if you vaulting into wall and jump, you will cling onto wall and you can use any of the moves to perform them and do a backflip ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **protips** opening fight with red and white, then when timer is about to run out, grab orange, as it resets the timer when buff starts to run out, it will flash sending and recalling kinsects regens their stam grab orange buff more easily by sending kinsect above monster then down marking kinsect on the certain parts: head, KO, tail, sever. this also gives you the buff

This gave me more confidence in using the insect glaive. I thought the air combos were priority. Its great to know the high damage is grounded attacks and air attacks are more for mounting.
new to insect glave here , I became interested after a fight with Fetalis , when a random hunter joined and used this weapon with a proficiency that he was airborne most of the time hitting the head of the monster and eventually ended up breaking and flinching it multiple times , I was in awe and thus started learning this weapon seriously
Diffrent to the other weapons so will feel fresh to play.... When I have only ever used insect glaives and dont understand other weapons lol. (I started with them and havent stoped sense)
I noticed that their is one move that you either forgot about or overlooked. If you pull back on the left stick relative to the player (if they are facing left, then pull the stick right, etc.) and hit the circle button; You do a back flip and attack at the same time. Since the triangle, triangle, circle combo does move you forward a fair bit, there comes moments where you overshoot your strikes and miss the monster's weak points like the head or the tail. So using this back flip is a great way to reset your position and it you can keep chaining the combo.
One of the best content creators on youtube man. Always precise, to the point, and generally well researched. Not only that but you also provide exact examples of things you're trying to display or emphasize. I really do appreciate all the work you put in to your content, Arekkz. Well done again!
There's something you seem to have missed, you can input back + O anywhere in between a combo to do some kind of backflip attack, useful for repositioning, and it can also chain right into the tornado slash which is very nice.
Quick tips: -Sending and recalling kinsects quickly regenerates their stamina -You can grab orange buff more easily by sending the kinsect above the monster and then send it downwards. (Ill add more tips if i can think of more)

I just got Monster Hunter for PC, and so many of the guides I've seen seem to cover longsword, dual blades, hammer or great sword in decent depth, but barely touch insect glave. I really have to thank you for this guide. I just have to figure out how the combos translate to PC controls.
Just something I saw from another IG video, but while the individual attacks in midair are less potent, from what I've heard, the dps is almost identical, something like 53 vs 56, meaning that flying glaive is a legitimate damage strategy. Granted, you'll be mounting a bit, so damage kinda stops for that, but nonetheless, I was really excited to hear that, because it's so much fun to do
You forgot to mention the Circle+Back move that lets you reposition yourself if your attack sends you ahead of the monster. Also a a very noteworthy mention is that while airborne, your attacks have natural Mind's Eye, so your attacks won't bounce off.
Nice overview for a glaive main. Speed kinsects also have a long range and return so good if you have a monster running. Also ariel attack combo i like to spam is circle, circle, circle , circle triangle for a finisher on the head. And airborne again.
I _almost_ really like this weapon, but it's so annoying to get all buffs active on smaller, more agile monsters like the tobi kadachi. it's just not fun spending the first 30-60 seconds of an encounter trying to hit the monster's head with the kinsect.
That's why you extract the most difficult essence as a surprise attack so you can aim f or it better (usually the white one), then get higher and get the brown one and then in front of it for the red one.
It would be really cool if after you scouted/found all the campsites in a certain area you could gain access to a pre-planning phase similar to Payday where you could spend resources to pre-set traps, track monster routes, or automatically know where the monster is.
I’m 300 hours into this game and main IG and just now I realized all of this about the insect Glaive. I’m such and idiot. I was wondering why the IG was so weak and didn’t know what those buffs meant.
Ok hear me out: ground combos might be where the damage is at, but mid-air combos are where the fun is at.

Guess this makes some good sync with the flashfly cage for your Palico then, as they'll plant free flashes for you to use rather frequently to activate the dust and blind the monster.
Worth mentioning: you can use your kinsect to trigger bombs and falling boulders. With a high speed kinsect it actually travels faster than a slinger stone, meaning you have a better chance of triggering an environmental trap while the monster is still under it.

I suggest doing some rebinds on this especially with aiming the Kinsect using the C or V key, these keys are awkard to hit, so i suggest rebinding so that it's on an easier to access key. I have mine dual bound on both the original key, and MB4 which works well for me.

One quick essence gathering tip: When you send your kinsect out it travels a set distance. If you're having a hard time reaching a particular buff (i.e. Orange buff from Bazel's back in this video), take some time familiarizing yourself with the distance your kinsect travels from sending it out from you. Then, once you have a general feel for how far that distance is, instead of just aiming for Bazel's back, aim *way* above it with plenty of room for clearing the monster and send it out with L2 + Triangle, then once your Kinsect is above Bazel, aim at the ground by his feet and direct your kinsect with L2 + Triangle again. Your kinsect will attempt to reach the point you're aiming at by traveling in a straight line. From directly above, you're much more likely to hit his back and get the essence you're going for, in this example. This technique takes a little longer travel time technically than just hitting to part you want first try and calling your kinsect back, but in situations where you don't have an easy line of sight always on the part you want to extract from, this technique of Kinsect directing will lessen some of your headache.

Small thing, if people still use this video as the extremely helpful guide it is: When doing the air dance hits, you never bounce of monster scales or hide. So even though you're fighting Barroth, Nergigante etc, no matter what sharpness you're at, you don't bounce off and can complete your combo.

You forgot an attack, which if you go back + circle, you will do the leaping slash backward, allowing for repositionin after the final circle hit.
Also didn't mention the thrust attack you can do after the circle combo finisher by pressing triangle. My bread and butter infinite combo with the glaive in MHW has always been circle + circle + triangle rather than triangle + triangle + circle.
You can also combo this into the initial triangle attack and then another backward leaping slash, which in certain situations is another helpful kind of infinite combo.
I don't think you can do the back circle after the final circle hit can you? I thought it's only available *before* that final hit

one piece of criticism I have for how you use the glaive is that you dont use the insect mark enough. it is insane how useful it is to mark an area for your kinsect to attack, especially if done in strategic areas.
for example, if I already have the triple buff I'll usually mark the monsters tail, that way my kinsect would follow and attack the monsters tail, building up that sever damage, and it comes with the added benefit of recovering some of my health when my insect runs out of stamina and returns to me. if you have a blunt insect you could mark the monsters head and build up that stun damage, and if timed correctly the insect could return to you with a red buff as soon as your current one runs out.
and even if you werent concerned with that stuff too much, you could just get a high attack power kinsect and then mark any random spot on the monster and let the insect add to your overall DPS, you could never go wrong with that.
basically what Im saying is that marking an area on a monster for your insect to attack is highly under utilized and should be implemented into regular glaive play, as it not only increases your overall DPS, but it increases your dust cloud usage by a wide margin, and can grant you and your team some really good personal benefits. after getting your buffs, marking the monster should always be your very next step before going into the melee yourself.

Also worth noting that if you don't have an opening to attack and your Kinsect's stamina is starting to run low, you can spam the recall/collect actions a few times to quickly bring its stamina back up to full. Very, very useful for status builds since this means you can have clouds almost constantly generating. Stack a status across your weapon, Kinsect, and Palico, and use this any chance you get, and you'll be a status-applying monster.
It's less of a hard rule and more just something to do when the stars align to give you an opening to do it, but still very much worth explaining on its own.
Master Dog very good point, The combo he shows for repositioning should actually only be used if the kinsect runs out of stamina.
I've cut a lot of tails off w my Kinect... Plus spamming damage and ko monster w a kinsect is funny.
I'm really happy to see even after all this time, Arekkz still has the top suggested videos for learning MH weapons. I keep checking back on these videos periodically when I decide to use a different weapon.
Those vertical strikes from the IG are fantastic for taking tails. But yes, being a air fighter is where the fun is at with this weapon. The general damage output for this weapon is pretty solid considering how quickly it hits. It's a better weapon than I thought it was when I first started playing MHW.

I'm not saying the game is dead. I was simply saying in relative terms, the playerbase has gone down massively. The view count for this video vs Arekkz's earlier videos (closer to when the game released) shows that the demand for MH videos isn't there anymore. Now I know Arekkz is a hardcore MH player/YTer but it should take him 4 months to release a basic weapon tutorial. Who is this helping? If you didn't know how to use the KB by now? It was my main months ago and i looked forward to Arekkz releasing a tutorial on it and I kept checking back to see if had released one but he hadn't until now? Too slow man. If you are still playing the game and enjoying it with friends then more power to you. Look, hear me out, I'm really new to these types of games. I really didn't wanna read all the instructions and shit so, I just figured "we'll all you do in every other RPG Is just Hit Dodge Hit Dodge and repeat, so I'll just do that". I ended up picking the glaive cause it looked cool, but once I started using it, I fell in love with the jump mechanic. It was all I would use. As you probably figured by now it sucked to do that all the time. It was bad damage along with the the fact i never ate a meal, ever, and the fact I didn't go for good skill in armor I only went for looks. I ended up hating the game for my own incompetence, but now I can't stop playing. Don't be me. Please read all the instructions given to you! Thanks.

Everyone is talking about the backflip circle attack, but something equally useful is that the poke is an animation cancel for the heavy circle attack.
Finally someone mentions the jump limit, every tutorial Ive seen says you can stay in the air as long as you have stamina and I found out about the limit through testing (luckily not in the middle of a hunt)
It'd be very op if you could manage to stay in the air at all times and replenish enough stamina to continue jumping

I'd recomnend protective polish for any IG build if you have it. IG loses sharpness faster than any other weapon except dual blades due to rapid hits and long attack chains.
Adu767 I believe Gunlance loses it quicker with the full burst based combo.
But I agree protective polish on IG is hella useful.
@@BorisTheGoose92 protective polish is preferable, but razor sharp also works very well, and since xeno set gives you both that and effect prolonger with plenty of gem slots to gem in attack or elemental attack, it's a really good choice to use in IG.

I come back to this video from time to time because it thought me so much about my favourite weapon, that was also my first weapon main. It’s also a nice refresher to hear about what all the extracts do, since the only one I remember is red.

So I just started playing MHW and I chose this weapon because the name intrigued me. Day 1 found me not understanding a GD thing about this, then second day I learned vaulting which made me fall in love, so I looked this up and you have caused my mind to do the universe expansion explosion. Thank you, really looking forward to tearing through fights with this info.
This helps a lottt. This was the weapon I started out with and I was getting my butt kicked and I knew I was definitely using wrong. Now I know what to do and I'm starting to complete hunts.
A new tip based off other guide videos (for iceborne with new claw mechanic) is to save mount for when monster is enraged, so you want to wall smash with claw at the start for more damage. Typically you only get 2-3 mounts per monster hunt based on the mounting damage threshold.
Am I the only one weirded out Arekkz didn't include the option you have to retreat: left joystick backwards + circle? It's great for evading and repositioning
Also, I find t interesting my go-to combo is so different, for any interested here it is:
Circle (triangle if sheathed) -> R2 -> triangle (after R2 you get a nice extra hit) -> triangle x2 -> circle -> triangle (cancel long animation with a quick stab) -> back + circle (to reset my position should I want to)
MrIzumi224 You can use any combo you like. He just showed the best combos. It is in fact proven tri, tri, circle repeat is the most dps a Glaive can do. However most people use triangle then circle over and over. It's almost the same damage but has huge stagger/server potential. If your moving forward it would then be forward triangke, O, O. Until a Mon goes down or after a mount for big damage if sheathed it would be foward triangle, into R2, into infinite combo, or triangle circle combo. By using the back evade hit even tho it deals damage it's almost always a damage lose. All of this doesn't really matter tho. If you don't speed run it's not gonna change the time of your hunts by that much so just have fun and play how you like.
I know how to play most of the the weapons by now, but I still watch your videos because they're simply entertaining to watch, great job on these vids man. 😃😃😃😃😃

indeed. this guy is what persuaded me that I'm not completely vulnerable in GS after all. still use the old insect glaive around new monsters, they are much too unpredictable for me to go in without a high-agility toy

just wanted to note out that the aerial back flip is a very handy/evasive move that you can pull of on the insect glaive by (i think) pressing backwards +O , which i think you may have forgotten to mention, otherwise, excellent tutorial as always. Cant wait for whats coming up on your channel.

Hey ! Small thing I discovered today, when latched onto a wall using an IG leap, you can press Forward and X (or whatever is your Dodge button) to make a jump upward, rather than leaping off the wall and back onto it like you showed. ^^

You missed that attack in which you’d do a backward leaping slash. It’s a nice attack for repositioning and getting out of harms way.
I believe you can also run up to climbable vines with your weapons drawn and climb them normally without putting away the glaive.

I don't think you can perform a wall run with glaive unsheathed, tried a few times and I just look like I'm trying to clip through the world

Finally! This was the one I was most looking forward to since it’s the weapon I most wanted to learn when I started playing world. Also,unless I’m mistaken, I think you forgot to mention the “retreating slash” (or at least that’s what I call it) where after inputting triangle if you hold back and circle I think you perform a cartwheel backwards. I normally would use it to extend my combos before I end with the big circle attack
Finally the tutorial for the weapon I gravitated towards when I started playing the game but didn't know anything about. Luckily now I do and I'm going to have great times with this.
I do have a question about Mixed Set Monday though. In MHW I'm currently running with a build that I got from another TH-camr but the set is amazing for beginners as you can make mistakes without them costing you and your team the hunt. So with this in mind can I submit the set for Mixed Set Monday but with full credit going to the TH-camr in question or is this a no go????

thanks for the guide. I've had this game day one, but ended up neglecting it. Now I've found my fave weapon, I'm way more into it.
Quick tip: if you are mounted a monster and it moves over to a wall you can run on (like the ropes around the trees in the arena) to try to knock you off, if you knock it down while it’s next to those surfaces you can point the joystick towards the walls to initiate a run midair, which allows you to do a downward strike on the fallen monster instead of having to fall to the ground and get up and whatever. This is especially useful if the monster is flying

I know I'm late to this (I decided to start using an insect glaive today after playing hammer and longsword for 90% of the time since mhw came out on PS4) but this has been extremely helpful. I haven't checked if you've done a video on the dragon soul kinsect, though it probably isn't necessary since it seems in line with what you've shown here. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for all the info here, and I'll definitely be watching the rest of this series, even if I think I've mastered the hammer and longsword. The insect glaive is one of my favorite weapons. I never did the ground attack as much. But now I will try to add it in my battle strategy. I usually try to aerial attack. Awesome video. Thanks for the tutorial.
You forgot to mention that after most moves, you can press Back+O to do a backflip slash. It doesn't deal much damage, but it's good for repositioning. Also, when jumping up walls, you only have to press Forward+X and you'll scale the wall and latch back on automatically. You'll scale the wall faster with White Extract, which also makes it faster than normally climbing. If you run out of stamina while climbing walls this way, just sit there for a sec and it'll restore.

Generally, I'd say red extract comes from the parts the monster uses to attack you, white for movement like you said and orange and green depend. Now when a monster uses his legs to attack too, generally, it will be a source of white extract and the red will be applied to other areas. But I have noticed that monsters that attack with their legs but have wings will have red extract in the legs and white in the wings.
Tell me if I'm wrong somewhere, but I think it's about it.^^
My loose rule of thumb:
Primary physical damage = Red
Primary movement = white
Alternative/elemental damage = orange
Then if all extract types are covered prior, tail = green
I can't think of a head that wasn't red, wings/legs are mostly white, and if the tail is green, good luck finding the orange (usually stomach/back in those cases, but quite a few exceptions)

I switched from the Dual Swords and I LOVE this weapon... It feels like a true hunter melee weapon with its plethora of utility options. Fun fun fun.
One thing to note about clinging to climbable/runnable surfaces is that if you input forward on the stick and X you can jump up and climb much faster than what was shown in the video. It is a very fast way to climb vines without much stamina use.
I can't believe I never knew about the wall grab after a vault! Also a minor detail but the L2+R2 shot where you mark the monster for your kinsect to attack is great for detonating barrels.

This gave me more confidence in using the insect glaive. I thought the air combos were priority. Its great to know the high damage is grounded attacks and air attacks are more for mounting.

new to insect glave here , I became interested after a fight with Fetalis , when a random hunter joined and used this weapon with a proficiency that he was airborne most of the time hitting the head of the monster and eventually ended up breaking and flinching it multiple times , I was in awe and thus started learning this weapon seriously

Same, tried charge blade and bow but I hated it. The only weapon that has come close for me is Sword and Shield.
I noticed that their is one move that you either forgot about or overlooked. If you pull back on the left stick relative to the player (if they are facing left, then pull the stick right, etc.) and hit the circle button; You do a back flip and attack at the same time. Since the triangle, triangle, circle combo does move you forward a fair bit, there comes moments where you overshoot your strikes and miss the monster's weak points like the head or the tail. So using this back flip is a great way to reset your position and it you can keep chaining the combo.

There's something you seem to have missed, you can input back + O anywhere in between a combo to do some kind of backflip attack, useful for repositioning, and it can also chain right into the tornado slash which is very nice.
Quick tips:
-Sending and recalling kinsects quickly regenerates their stamina
-You can grab orange buff more easily by sending the kinsect above the monster and then send it downwards.
(Ill add more tips if i can think of more)

I just got Monster Hunter for PC, and so many of the guides I've seen seem to cover longsword, dual blades, hammer or great sword in decent depth, but barely touch insect glave. I really have to thank you for this guide. I just have to figure out how the combos translate to PC controls.

Just something I saw from another IG video, but while the individual attacks in midair are less potent, from what I've heard, the dps is almost identical, something like 53 vs 56, meaning that flying glaive is a legitimate damage strategy. Granted, you'll be mounting a bit, so damage kinda stops for that, but nonetheless, I was really excited to hear that, because it's so much fun to do

You forgot to mention the Circle+Back move that lets you reposition yourself if your attack sends you ahead of the monster.
Also a a very noteworthy mention is that while airborne, your attacks have natural Mind's Eye, so your attacks won't bounce off.
I love how every weapon is one of his personal favorites.

you forgot the backleap slash, when you press circle with the analog stick back while in combo. very useful when you want to dodge while attacking.
I mained Insect glaive in my first Monster Hunter game, MH4U. Now that I've reached the Guiding Lands, I think it's time to return to my roots.

Nice overview for a glaive main. Speed kinsects also have a long range and return so good if you have a monster running.
Also ariel attack combo i like to spam is circle, circle, circle , circle triangle for a finisher on the head. And airborne again.
I _almost_ really like this weapon, but it's so annoying to get all buffs active on smaller, more agile monsters like the tobi kadachi. it's just not fun spending the first 30-60 seconds of an encounter trying to hit the monster's head with the kinsect.
That's why you extract the most difficult essence as a surprise attack so you can aim f or it better (usually the white one), then get higher and get the brown one and then in front of it for the red one.
It would be really cool if after you scouted/found all the campsites in a certain area you could gain access to a pre-planning phase similar to Payday where you could spend resources to pre-set traps, track monster routes, or automatically know where the monster is.
It would be really good for beginner because the wild Palicos could show you monster move sets and give you tips.
I’m 300 hours into this game and main IG and just now I realized all of this about the insect Glaive. I’m such and idiot. I was wondering why the IG was so weak and didn’t know what those buffs meant.
