Eddy is rewriting history a bit here. The Bears made the Qualifying final in 1995 & the Prelim in 1996. In 1997 they merged with Fitzroy, who really were the basket case, not the Bears. The Bears were on the way up. But one thing he had was a good developing list. Young talent. Some home grown talent, 4 Qld & 2 NT too, Voss being one. They had been reasonably successful under John Northey who coached from 1996 (end of Bears)-1998 (start of Lions), the last year being a disaster. Then leigh Matthews took over and the rest is history. Matthews is the greatest coach in AFL history. I don't care about Clarko, this bloke is far better. If Matthews had Clarko's team he would have won 10.

The AFL directive last year was that if a player bends his knees when being tackled then it is play on. Toby Greene bent his Knees so is automatically deemed to have played for the free. The same "neutral" supporters who declare that Ginnivan should never receive another free kick are outraged when Collingwood's opponents don't receive frees either.
People can’t have it both ways. Either we pay high tackles full stop or we muddy the waters by making the umpires judge the intent of player of being tackled.
I agree but also I think there *is* a middle ground where we CAN say: you ducked/shrugged/dropped the knees. I *feel* like it has to do with when that occurs but I'm not certain myself (if you drop/duck *AS/after* tackle then its play-on)
If a player can insight a high free kick that’s an advantage having that player on your team. They Keep making rules to remove anyone other than a midfielder having an influence on the game. It is just dumb and turning the game into something no more than a touch footy marathon.

The fact that speccies are still in the game, Ginnivan 'never' gets tackled high, and if a player looks like he went low or turned around, no 'high' free kick will be paid, proves that the AFL umpires , rules committee,and it's officials have no concern for player head safety. If an umpire "feels like" a player made the head high contact happen or went low or shrugged the shoulder, player safety is out the window. Either way, the AFL and the rules within it make us all look like idiots for watching this game
The game is a far better spectacle and much healthier when the umpires have minimal involvement. The less free kicks paid the better, of course blatant free kicks need to be called but the rules should be as such that infringements need to be blatant, not subtle technicalities that result in 1000 different opinions because it's so complicated.
Free kicks should be paid, especially holding the ball that they rarely pay. Pay the frees (not tiggy touchwoods) and get the game moving away from the rugby scrum packs …

Note also the fool umpires think it is their responsibility to umpire the game differently in different parts of the ground. The rules that apply to touching, tackling, spoiling in the midfield are very different to the rules applied in the forward and back halves. They are an ongoing embarrassment and have become key influencers on who wins and looses. This is wrong.
I disagree that they influence the game in such a way. If u think about the amount of decisions and mistakes/good plays that players make compared to umpires I think u will find that the players have 99% of the influence on the game

As a NRL guy who doesnt mind his AFL , the player getting tackled completely . Then hes pretty much offloading when hes tackled . I was told 20yrs ago they would call that BALL .
That's silly, because then everyone will be "ducking" attempting to get out of the tackle, and get a high free kick. Players will (like they are already) exploit it, which is why they're lenient with handing them out. Players exploit the high free kick rules now and they definitely will more if what you say is true.

@effkay3691 Point is players with the ball deliberately FORCE the high contact to get a free kick. That’s what’s caused all this. Sloppy tackling leading to high contact is one thing. But when a tackler is about to wrap a player up from between the hips and shoulders and the ball carrier either shrugs their arms up for the high contact or deliberately drops their legs and falls into the tackler causing the high contact then there’s nothing a tackler can do aside from just not tackle. Look at that flog Ginnivan he was the prime example. He would see the tackler coming and he would always deliberately get under the tacklers arms for the high contact and there’s nothing the tackler can do aside from just not tackle. There were times he’d get the ball and the tackler would stop with their arms out bracing to wrap up Ginnivan and he’d just fall head first into them before they’d even touched him and he’d deliberately draw the high contact. And the worst part is the ball carrier could have had prior opportunity but because they force the high contact they’d get the free kick rather than he pinned holding the ball. In a time where they’re meant to be “serious” about head injuries and concussion you CANNOT have players be rewarded for putting them selves at risk, which is what flogs like Ginnivan had been doing. And the umpire’s have now over corrected and are second guessing all high tackles.
Women in positions of power and influence in male sports, from umpires to management etc, are decisions based solely on criteria unrelated to the actual role! In short, politically motivated and ultimately useless because the game suffers as a result, fans become frustrated and annoyed and the game as a spectacle loses all appeal. I saw this happening years ago and have not watched or enjoyed the game for over a decade. The AFL is a corporation - like Qantas and others - that have no interest in the needs of it's customers. Folks should boycott the game until the AFL return it to the people.

With all these "nail biting" wins which are so often low scoring, it's become a game of quarters. I hear commentators praising coaches for producing whole quarters without goals. That's soccer, not AFL.
Love the game , but inconsistent umpiring is ruining the game , the umpires seem to let things slide in the big games , the only game in the world where this happens
