EZ way to permanently fix the whole registration identity issue:
Just weld an RFID tag of the VIN deep into the frame and have the alternator or electric motor read that RFID, then transmit it. It would not have to transmit far... 50-100 meters. That would then be recorded by all cameras; enabled dash cameras, traffic cams, police squadcars and the like. So if it hits and runs any vehicles with dash cameras would capture the vin so that police would be able to track it down simply by polling local traffic cameras. Or just go to the registered owner's home if it wasn't stolen.
Stolen cars could also be easily tracked by every camera it passes - or passes it on a roadway lacking traffic cams.

The amount of these "ghost" cars in Brooklyn is insane. Ten minutes on the Jackie Robinson and you will see a few guaranteed. It isn't about fixing the issue of people driving without a license or insurance though.... It is about toll evasion while the rest of us common folk have to live with this lawlessness. Keep voting for people who do not care able your quality of life.
yesterday I went on the whitestone bridge towards queens, im front of me a Hyunday SUV with tape covering the last number of the plate, next to me was a state trooper. If I could see the altered plate, the cop should have seen it too, but nothing, dude just went on his merry way. Today I saw him again....

They actually have. Police I’m NY can charge person with felony possession of a forged document if you have a fake plate. At least that’s a recent thing they started doing. The problem is Police aren’t allowed to chase unless they committed a violent felony so the perps don’t stop when they try to pull them over

Ghost cars are cars without proper tags and registration. Fake temp plates, no plates, stolen plates, etc. Essentially, cars who's displayed registration doesn't trace back to the owner of the vehicle

they hire 3rd party contractors who do their own hiring without background checks. The responsibility and liability lies with the contractor..

New York City is filled with so many paper plates and out of state plates that are not registered to the cars.The Bronx, Queens, And Brooklyn have become a haven for people like this. Especially neighbors the ticket agents are afraid to go to.
Yup, I saw one yesterday that expires Oct. 15. Thing is temp plates are good for 30 days from the date issued. Yesterday was Sept. 5.
I did see one last week that expired in February 24. LOL they never get pulled over.

At this point, a car with no plates can park on a sidewalk in broad daylight and the cops will do absolutely nothing. Unless it's in Manhattan. Everywhere else does not matter.

And yet, it is still not enough. I am constantly getting behind vehicles with obstructed license plates. License plates where the letters and/or numbers have been scraped off, license plates that hang at 180 degree angles, and license plates that are hidden behind something such as racks to hide the tag numbers. Those vehicles then drive aggressively through speed cameras and schools with a reckless abandon, and nothing ever seems to be done about it because unlike years ago when police used to actually patrol the roads, nowadays they just sit in parking lots waiting for a call.
when caught with a plate that is unreadable the same old excuse is 'its the dmv's fault' its up to the owner to keep everything in good order. If a headlight goes out just blame the car company.
Except it soon won't matter because the new tech can just wirelessly send more data including not just registration status but stuff like, location, past and future, information from your phone and location data from that, call logs and texts, remote shut down, voice recordings, spending habits, and AI filtering of data.
It bumped in many cars from 2018+ now it's going to again in cars 2024 and 2026.
In CA it'll be more control of this for other states to see if it works while in 10 years certain cars won't be able to register even if they are working fine which will be flagged for a stop.
As it currently stands people on states with the felony bar raised high can't get arrested below that threshold. In CA it's 950$ so a plate being wrong often won't garner a stop unless they are visibly doing a crime. Most police have bigger fish to catch than fix it tickets but they do stop these cars here and there.
Imagine if they pursued ACTUAL criminals that way. Naaah, that's CRAZY talk😂

I do not live in New York, but I am glad to see this kind of enforcement. Every one of these drivers who chooses to drive an unregistered and typically uninsured vehicle drives up insurance costs for the rest of us. Pay your dues. It's part of being an adult.
There is only 1 exit from the tunnel so why not position cop cars on the other side? Also, no name of the driver so that you cant search the arrest record to show he is back on the street.

Horrible reporting. Something happened someone got hurt that's all folks. No info on the nature of the cops injuries. No name of the transport company. No info on why the driver was suspended. What happened to 'news'?
The only way to keep dangerous unlicensed drivers from driving is to ban cars altogether for everyone. Where have we heard this logic before?

I'm in NY and those medical transport company's are always hiring/looking for drivers with their own vehicle. So I'm not at all surprised a jackhole like this slipped through the cracks. He probably lied about his vehicle info to make it look legit by submitting someone else's vehicle details, but how they missed the suspended license and most likely lack of car insurance screams either incompetence or non compliance with state laws for such a business.

The arrest means nothing if the perpetrator is released without bond of he's prosecuted at all.
The only thing that comes close to getting this problem solved is word of mouth on social media, after people are arrested and vehicles are confiscated. Unfortunately, there are approx. 1,000,000 vehicles stolen every year in the US. So, ghost and stolen cars are not just a NYC problem. I also suspect, although I have no way to verify this, that stolen vehicles, especially those that end up in foreign countries is a bigger problem for residents in sanctuary cities/states. Additionally, I've recently noticed that almost anyone can be a "No habla Ingles" Lyft/Uber driver. JUST SAYING...

Every single taxi in nyc is supposed to be registered with TLC. How this passengers didn’t manage to suspect anything upon seeing a paper plate non TLC car picking them up is beyond me.
