Matt Savoie for Ryan McLeod a necessary trade for the Sabres

  • Kevyn Adams finally swings a big trade, sending prospect Matthew Savoie to Edmonton for centerman Ryan McLeod and AHLer Tyler Tullio. Why are people outside of Buffalo hammering the Sabres for making this trade?
Sneaky Joe defends the reasoning for saying the Sabres overpaid in this trade, but also defends the Sabres for having to overpay in a trade that makes them better. A deep dive into Ryan McLeod shows a player that should perform much better in Buffalo than in Edmonton.

No not really. He rotated in on the 2nd unit with Derek Ryan.
Was 9th in PK time per game just ahead of Ryan by 20 seconds. Was mostly Nuge at double his time and Janmark and Brown. Mostly would start with Nuge and Janmark, and if a forward got a chance to change out Brown would come in, then Ryan, but he got scratch sometimes for Carrick if they needed more size in the middle or when Henrique got healthy and when he wasn't on the bench McLeod would be the next guy in.

I'm sure Ruff has pushed Adams to bring in these better speed skaters and tougher more physical players to play his style of Hockey. I'm excited about these new physical more defensive players we have signed. We have been pushed around a lot last two seasons and we learned two years ago we can't outscore every team especially in tough meaningful games at the end of the season. We had to get more grit and speed badly in our bottom six. I like what Adams has done and let's face it big free agent forwards do not want to sign with a franchise who hasn't gotten into the playoffs in 13 years. Tough very tough sell to top high scoring free agent forwards. Plus most of those guys are 29 plus in age and older you get especially being a great scorer who wants to win the Cup are not going to sign a long term deal to finish out your career in non playoff drought franchise like the Sabres. So until we can break this streak high profile FAs are not going to sign with us. Similar to what the Bills went through a few years back.

Will fill that third line center role and he actually also played in top 6 sometimes on the wing. i think he has more upside than he has shown. Could see him getting 16-20 goals next year with more ice time. Not sure about the take that he is an elite defensive forward - can make defensive mistakes in his end 5 on 5, and is not very physical for someone his size. @ColeSATurner 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Sure, we needed a young, fast, excellent defender on the 3rd line center who plays PK, has some offense in his game, and will probably be cheap to extend long-term. This was still a huge overpayment and Savoie already looks like an NHL-ready top 9 forward with big upside and has been playing an all-around great game on all ends of the ice, even if he doesn't pan out, and there's no way around it. Both can be true. It's sometimes what you have to do if you're the Sabres though when no one wants to sign with you in free agency. You can only have 6 forwards in the top 6 anyway. If they already have long-term plans and trust in Thompson, Cozens, and others then it isn't a terrible thing to trade one of your 1st round prospects from a couple of years ago to get the perfect top 9 guy to help your team win the Stanley Cup. This trade could honestly end up any way possible. It could be a disaster for either team, work out for both teams, work out for neither team, etc. It'll be interesting to see how this ages in the future. The main thing is how much money and term McLeod wants. The biggest issue is whether or not McLeod's advanced stats are manipulative for playing with Draisaitl and being placed on the 4th line at times. If you're going to trade your current best prospect on the entire roster and a 9th overall pick then I would expect you to get a bonified top 6 forward. Let alone someone who still has some concerns with even being a permanent 3rd line center.
I don't have an issue with what they were doing at first with Krebs. He was never going to be a top player in the NHL. He didn't a consistent offensive and defensive upside for it. He was always going to be a bottom 6 young energy player at best and playing with veteran players and getting experience, sort of as a Morgan Geekie, isn't a bad idea to develop him into a good one. The problem was they did it for too long and didn't give him enough special teams time where he's regressed into a 13th forward.

Lindy is going to improve this team and has massive influence. McLeod INSTANTLY improves the Penalty Kill and the 3rd line. One of the fastest players in the league with size. You're right that McLeod is definitely not physical. And nobody is in-game faster than that 97 guy. I will watch with anticipation to see if McLeod does find more offense, because I agree that he's capable of it, especially with more ice time and o-zone faceoffs, maybe some PP. Good penalty killer. I wouldn't call him an elite defensive player, but he's not bad at it, either. We've been hoping he'd blossom in Edmonton for a few years but again you're right that he was behind some jaw dropping talent blocking his path.
Agreed Matt Savoie becomes Oilers' #1 prospect automatically. The locally born and bred Savoie brothers from Edmonton playing together could be a great story. They'll get a chance to play together in Bakersfield because the Oil have so much forward depth already in the NHL. He may be excited to consider going home and playing with his bro and if he's real good then maybe even the big dogs. Savoie wasn't jumped on the prospect chart by Benson, he was ineligible to play in Rochester basically due to age. He was our best prospect by a lot. We get great players in Buffalo via prospects. We just lost a great player. You do understand Moose Jaw traded 7 PICKS (2 first rounders) for Savoie, knowing he's leaving to the AHL/NHL?
I'd have rather seen them trade Benson AND Krebs. I'm not a whiny fan. I've followed only the Sabres my whole 20+ years of being a hockey fan. I've defended KA and basically everything i've seen people complain about the entire time.

He's a good defensive player but in the playoffs he was nervous and prone to some bad giveaways. In the regular season he struggled to score as a center, same with the playoffs, but was productive on the left wing. He's a good player but he needs to grow in the hard areas of the ice, including faceoffs. BTW he was on the 2nd PP unit but they just didn't play a ton. The NHL may be laughing right now, but I'm not. I hate this trade. We got absolutely fleeced, and the question I have is, if Savoie was that expendable, why didn't we trade him for help any other time in the last 2 years? GMKA, has ben preaching patience for years and talked about building from within and not making foolish moves in a desperate attempt to make the playoffs once. Why wait until Kevyn is desperate to save his job and get a marginal 3rd line center? Why not make this move a year ago right after Quinn got hurt and get a top 6 forward instead? IMO, worst move of the Adams era, and I hope he gets fired. What happens in a couple years when Tuch decides to leave as a UFA and we need a top line RW? WE'll be regretting that Savoie wasn't traded. Send me the hate comments. I don't care. This trade sucks.

I agree . The reason we didn’t get chychrun is cuz he didn’t wanna move savoie or kulich . Then the sens got him for peanuts . Sabres fans are delusional about this cuz of how insanely good out prospect pool is , but savoie would be the best prospect in most teams pools and no team would trade a prospect on this level for McLeod. Also u could at least get a decent pick or something too? There’s no way the oilers were very attached to McLeod lol . Terrible trade

I'm not going to throw stones at you I'm on your side this is the worst trade in the Kevin Adams era by fire a desperation move big deal make the playoffs one year and get swept in the first round wasn't that fun and lose an A+ Prospect in the transaction for a borderline third line Center. I watched him closely this whole playoffs and he does some good things but his hockey sense is horrendous. That's why he has all that speed and skill what is at best a third line Center and a fourth line Center on most teams. I'm telling you it has Terry's fingerprints all over it he wants that playoff money. Don't believe that crap if I want more money I'll go drill more Wells that's just BS. That's why there's a licensing fee on the new stadium. One thing rich people love more money. I don't know how this guy Joe and defend this trade because it is a joke. Matt savioe is at least 2 years away still . He couldn’t make a huge impact in the AHL which is why he only played 6 games . He looked totally lost in his one NHL game last year and in the 2024 world junior tournament he had 0 goals and 1 assist in 4 games . The kid is not close to being ready in my opinion. We have a lot of young talent in the system that in my opinion is as good . And we got someone who can help us break the drought . It’s a win .

Sabers fans get ready for disappointment. People keep calling Mcleod a 3rd line center. Sure he's been playing there but there is a reason the oilers picked up henrique.
Mcleod doesn't have near enough skill to play in the top six. He's also a super soft player which doesn't bode well for a bottom 6 role. Mcleod is allergic to contact. He plays an exclusively perimeter game.
He is fast, but doesnt utilize his speed for anything productive. He will frustrate you. The play consistently dies on his stick. Mcleods best usage was as a 2nd line left winger. But he couldnt produce any points playing with draisaitl.
The soft clearances will piss you off.
The poor board play will piss you off.
Mcleod is a cap dump. Oilers getting anything back is a win.
