    • @Celciusify

      The sound will be different, but a powerful centerlock gun is extremely loud. I don't know what kind of guns they'll get, but F1 and LMP1 guns run at 25bars (362PSI), more than double of what the NASCAR guns run at. If you're at a street course, you're likely hear them over the cars if you're on the grandstands facing the pits.

    • @whippy107
      @whippy107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      wow, I bet nascar has been making such a big deal about loose lug nuts lately to try and garner support for the one lug concept that most nascar fans are not so excited about.

    • @scifiknut
      @scifiknut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@whippy107 I don't see why going from 5 lug nuts to 1 center nut is going to make NASCAR worse. I've been waiting for this. Now cars most likely won't have to come in again if there is only one lug nut to focus on on each wheel. Losing two to three laps on the shorter ovals because of loose lug nuts and thus a loose wheel, forcing teams to pit again, has been extremely frustrating to drivers, teams and fans. And made even worse if the driver picks up a pit speeding violation in addition. I do have one major worry, though. With the shift from steel to aluminium wheel rims, how will these be affected during the longest races? Will the heat build-up cause problems with loosening and tightening the center lug nut? What if the lug nut is damaged/deformed during a race and the impact wrench fails to grip the lug nut during a pit stop, causing a lengthy delay or even a DNF? The new season will definitely bring some excitement and a few unknowns with it. Hopefully NASCAR can work out most of the kinks during current next-gen testing and off-season.
      Best regards from a long-time Norwegian NASCAR enthusiast.

      @@scifiknut I'm not totally down on the single lug, but being a fan of the sport for over 30 years I appreciate the skill that the tire changers have had to develop and maintain in order to keep the teams competitive. Watching those guys change lugs so fast has been artful, and I suppose it's a shame others in the future won't be able to appreciate that moving forward. I'm also getting old and set in my ways LOL Cheers from the USA.

    • @scifiknut
      @scifiknut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@whippy107 Sure, I can totally understand. It's tradition. I've seen some of the TH-cam videos on how some feel that NASCAR has lost its identity. It's new and perhaps more politically correct drivers, it's the new play-off format etc. It's several things. I love to see the tight racing and as a European, watching the street circuit type of racing where they go left *and* right (😉) is closest to my heart. But oval racing is cool too, as long as one driver isn't running away with it from the start (that Kyle Larson is on a serious roll after joining Hendrick Motor Sports).
      But, that was a slight digression 🙂. Back to pit stops and lug nuts. Absolutely, when you see the cars breaking into their respective pit boxes and the tire changers, jackman and gasman move into position, it's a well choreographed and fluid maneuver in which they have to be spot-on. You have got to appreciate the many, many hours spent on hitting those lug nuts each and every time at high speed without missing a beat. Sure, there are some mishaps, but seeing the best pit crews pull off incredibly fast pit stops considering they are doing one side first and then have to sprint to the other side and repeat the job, that's really something to behold. It's perhaps something most of us take for granted, sadly, and we don't always see how much work and dedication that goes into being a pit crew member and not just the tire changers. For example, watching how the #9 team managed to sufficiently repair Elliot's car after he was shoved into the wall by #4 Harvick at the Charlotte Roval was quite amazing. I almost wished for Elliot to completely catch up with Harvick and do some retaliation, but then karma struck and Harvick took himself out. Can't deny I let out a chuckle and a squeal of joy 😉.

      @@whippy107 I know what you mean. My dad was an IndyCar mechanic back in the 1960s, and one of his most prized possessions is a brass Proto wheel hammer with an aluminum handle. He hit the tail end of the years where they still used "knock off" wheel nuts, before going to the nitrogen air guns. You are right, a 5 lug pit stop is an art, but having been around the IndyCar and sporty car world all my life, I'm totally used to the center lock wheels. I even considered putting center lock wheels on my daily driver, however changing a flat on the side of the road would be a pain, so I decided against it.

    Diffuser expands the air as it leaves the rear of the car. that helps the pressure differential above and below the car, that helps to suck the car to the ground which is the down force effect you get from it. then the expanded air is moving much closer to laminar flow out the rear of the car rather than air being forced up by a lip or wing. cleaner air behind allows for closer racing and less getting light in the rear from someone "stealing your air".

    • @tomchrisfield7348

      The diffuser CAN add downforce. My question is going to be- if one car comes up and pushes another will the air "pack up" under the leading car??? Now with the center lug, tire changing is pretty quick, and now pit stop time will depend on the gas man essentially. The limiting factor has been, and will continue to be, fuel. Most of the time, the thing that prevents a stop from being faster is making sure you get enough fuel in the car. Since NASCAR fuel cans are gravity fed, there's not a whole lot you can do to speed that up, so, as long as it stays gravity fed, fuel will always be the limiting speed factor on pit road

  • @gullreefclub
    @gullreefclub 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry Larry but a Rear Diffuser does not clean up the air behind the car how can I say this is because I also am a fan of IMSA and F1. What I do see and fully believe will be a big problem is the falling down and breaking off of rear diffusers from bump drafting, and the general rubbing of front and rear bumpers in normal NASCAR racing. Additionally I have great concerns about NASCAR not only going from a 15” wheel to a 18” wheel but even more concerns with the use of aluminum wheels as well as the center wheel nut. The bigger wheel is going to decrease the sidewall profile or size and while yes it will allow for a slightly stiffer sidewall it also takes away the shock absorbing effect of the larger sideway this will in theory possibly slower the cars down which is the reason that F1 also is going to a larger rim diameter but F1 is going from a 13” wheel to 17 and 19 inch wheel if I am remembering the sizes correctly where as NASCAR is going from 15 to 18 inch wheel diameter. Additionally the width of the tires in F1 are much wider in F1 than NASCAR which will also play a major part in the impact of the change in wheel diameter. As for NASCAR going to an Aluminum Alloy wheel this is of most concern to me for several reasons all which mainly have to do with safety. To start with the steel wheels that all NASCAR teams use are relatively inexpensive and that is a good thing since each team needs to have enough rims for at least two races because of how the Goodyear tire program works. The simple version is post race all the tires a team got for that race are turned back into Goodyear while they are mounted on the rims and then sent to a facility for the tires to be dismounted rims washed and inspected for wear to lug nut holes, square/trueness to ensure they aren’t bent, as well as being inspected for other physical defects such as cracks. All of these inspections can be done visually with no problem because they are made of steel and the same is true for the new aluminum wheels except for cracks/stress cracks. Which is why F1 teams have the rims for there cars periodically x-rayed and they are scrapped after “X” many times tires are mounted on them. The difference is a F1 team has at most 100 rims and team budget that could fund two a 4 car NASCAR teams and still have money left over. A single car cup team needs to have around 175 rims so do the math for the how much the rim budget is going to increase and since a steel wheel basically is only replaced when a found to be no longer serviceable but the aluminum wheels in NASCAR like F1 are going to more than likely have a service life as well as needing to be x-rayed checked for cracks this is going to raise the cost of NASCAR cup racing on a series that has continued shrink it’s field size because of lack of race teams. Back to safety concerns about aluminum wheels and NASCAR cup racing as it is we normally see between 3 and 5 wheels a race season suffer a wheel center break out due to impact against another car or wall my question is how many do you think will happen with aluminum wheels or possibly worse yet chunks of aluminum wheels breaking off when hitting the wall or curb and go flying into the stands possibly hitting a spectator. Lastly a IndyCar or F1 car has far fewer pits stops than a NASCAR Cup car and it is not uncommon for them to cross thread a wheel nut /spindle and when that happens the car is retired in NASCAR currently teams will uses a rethreading die if a wheel stud threads are damaged because they have five and in truth only 3 are really needed and additionally if a lug or two is not tight but the others are it really does not matter but if a wheel nut is not tightened correctly well there is no chance of limping it safely into the pits. Personally I think think NASCAR is making a large mistake and will alienate even more of its core fan base and if they don’t attract replacements well it will continue to die a slow death but just faster

    If they do it like F1 does it then the gun has a ton of LED lights on it. When they throw the wheel on; the nut is not torqued correctly so the LED's shoed Red (no crap, it's a loose nut). When the nut is torqued to the right spec then the light on the gun turns Green and they can move on to the next wheel or if that's the last wheel they let the car go. Every single other racing series has used a single giant Nut to hold on to the wheel since the 1960's. Point is that it forces every other part of the Pit Stop to be faster and much more competitive, leading to more competitive pit stops.

    Quite a few wheels will fall off to start with whilst they adjust to the centre lock wheels, they had several wheels come off in F1 when they banned mid race refuelling, there will be ill fitted wheel locks to start with

    They are going from steel rim to alluminium because that's what the manufacturer is doing on production cars. What manufacturer in the series is using the center lock on production cars?? 🤔
