Review: 2019 Kia K900 - Luxury Car Bargain

  • I review the all-new 2019 Kia K900. At about $65,000 the K900 is expensive, but that price gives you an interior that's very competitive with the German cars, while also giving you a larger vehicle than the others. This, combined with impressive driving dynamics when going both fast and slow, makes the K900 an appealing package. Add in their unmatched 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty, and the Kia is the clear value leader, especially for those that plan to keep a car beyond the usual 3 year lease period. What do you think of the K900? Thanks to Kia for providing this vehicle for review.

      I get what you are saying, but KIA, Hyundai, Genesis, BS BS BS - all those brands, they will NEVER EVER be able to compete with other brands unless they start using same materials, same quality control - not only same designers...

      @johnpierson2737 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      WhoCares I’m actually curious. Not that I’m going to purchase a KIA in the near future, but what is it that differs so much? Don’t both manufacturers use faux leather and soft touch material all throughout the car?

    • @CasualXCars
      @CasualXCars 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnpierson2737 Totally legitimate question: it is not about materials, I am sure if you sat in one you'd feel luxury marerials around you... But, biggest sign there will be issues is: look at the prices and value of those models how they sink after year, two, three... Not about the materials anymore but people simply not wanting to keep them... What goes wrong with those cars only owners can tell us all, but based on market prices there is something off... Then, years of R&D from other brands simply does not get easily tricked - longetivity, reliability, especially from Japanese lux brands is unbeatable (specifically Lexus in mind)...
      If I was spending 60-65k I would myself get BMW M550i Xdrive without thinking... Once you see what you can buy for that money, it is a game changer...

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CasualXCars Do those "materials" include high strength steel in the body? If so, Hyundai and KIA have the highest proportion of high strength steel in their vehicles in the industry. In fact, Hyundai is sometimes characterized as a "steel company that makes cars." Do "materials" apply to interior appointments? If so, it's noteworthy that the nappa leather in my 2012 KIA Sorento that I traded last year showed virtually no wear or sign of use. The same can't be said of my neighbor's BMW with half the mileage. Does "quality control" refer to initial manufacturing faults? If so, it's notable that Hyundai and KIA are #1 and #2 according to JD Power's ranking of brands in 2019.

    A very underrated car. The K900 maintains the handling aspect of the Stinger (0.95g) while upgrading the refinement. Add some Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires to the K900, and it will out handle the Stinger with ease. This can be applied to most Korean cars in general.

      They have to because not everyone is sold on the Korean brands yet because of the Japanese have dominated for decades in the U.S. for the Asian brands. The Japanese brands have proven their reliability. Time will tell if Kia/Hyundai (same co.) will be as reliable with all this tech their offering at a reasonable price that undercuts comparable offerings. Chances are they could be cutting corners somewhere else. It would not be a good move for them if they are.

    KIA doesn't expect to sell many K900's in North America. Its target market is Korea and the huge opportunities in other Asian countries, especially in China. In the US the K900 is meant mainly to be a model that draws customers to showrooms where they can see Optimas, Cadenzas, Stingers, and Tellurides. And while the image of KIA as a budget brand has been declining for the last decade, the K900 is meant to bury that image once and for all.
    It has been extremely successful in Korea since its introduction (where it's called the K9 and jokes about it being a "canine" aren't likely to be prevalent.) Chauffeur driven vehicles with large, well appointed rear seats are much more popular in Asia than in North America and in the first five months after its introduction in Korea sales of large sedans from Mercedes Benz and BMW dropped by over a third. All in all, the K900, much like the Stinger, is a halo model that suggests what KIA can accomplish.

      KIA's reputation for low resale is old news and rapidly changing. I traded a 2012 KIA Sorento for the 2018 model last year. The dealer gave me within $800 of the KBB estimate of a Toyota Highlander with comparable trim, mileage, etc. Considering I had paid $6000 less for the 2012 model than the best offer I received from a Toyota dealer for the Highlander, I made out like a bandit.

    The upgrades they made for this have truly made it a great looking vehicle. The front end on the old one looked bad. This new one all around looks like a true luxury car, one that it is not. I just found a 2019 with 15k miles listed for $40,000. So a few more years on the used market and they'll be a steal of a price. For $40k its still a steal, but would still be a hefty payment. Maurice Lacroix is s respected Swiss watch company. They make a wristwatch that actually costs more than this Kia, at $68,000; though I suspect the clock in the car is a less expensive quartz watch, maybe $300. I wish more car companies would use actual watch companies for their clocks, rather than just a generic watch. For example, a Grand Seiko in a Lexus.

Beautiful interior; this model is a sleeper, people don't know about it. Key design is nice--most auto journalists do not discuss key design, so I am glad Matt does so. @15:00 hit the start button, "and it starts right up" (a Matt phrase, ? copyright). Also agree that other brands have same fascia through the different models, but this K900 has its own look. Car is on my short list; I currently drive a luxury car that is 17 years old which I might miss, however this car is very nice. I like that is not just another Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, etc. Something about having a bit less common vehicle. Matt...on your price comparisons, as you point out the Kia warranty is much better. If it wasn't for the horrible dual clutch trans in my Kia Soul, I'd be tempted (if i could afford it). But the trans in that Soul put such a sour taste in my mouth, I don't think I'll ever consider a Kia/Hyundai again. But that's just me. As always, great review Matt.

    • @stephenhendricks103

      It's not unusual for a manufacturer to offer a pair of vehicles that are similar at the top of their mainstream brand and the base level of their premium brand. The Toyota Avalon and base Lexus models are similar to the Hyundai/Genesis approach. Likewise with Ford and Lincoln brands, Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac models, etc.

      RedPanda or superiority cuz you didn't have to spend 100 k to get the same shit. This is a car for real people who care about impressing themselves, not for phony people who are trying to impress those around them. There was a guy a few weeks ago now that was totally impressed with my car...until he saw the badge(KIA). Then he turned his nose up and got into his Mercedes. Haha, I love when shit like that happens. I started up my car, opened the pano roof, hit the rear sunshade switch, turned on the ventilated seats and fuckin laughed at that guy.

    • @RedPanda555
      @RedPanda555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redrock861 Like many items you buy, cars include an intangible emotional component. So when you say the "same shit", it's really not the same shit to many Mercedes, BMW or Lexus buyers, because they want the intangible component of owning a luxury auto marque with a long and storied history, and whilst that feeling is intangible, it is absolutely quantifiable from a financial perspective because people are willing to pay for it.
      To these people, the badge is equally if not more important than the metal parts and engine that physically make up the car itself. Case in point, is a non-branded handbag made with the exact same materials, in the exact same way and comprising the exact same design as a Chanel handbag, the "same shit" as a genuine Chanel handbag? Physically yes, emotionally no. And since people are emotional beings, that's really what matters in the end.

    Interesting that Kia still sells this after they cloned this model and now sell it as a Genesis G90. They also took the Hyundai '15/'16 Genesis Sedan and cloned that to become the G80. Hyundai stopped selling the Genesis sedan when they launched the brand but I guess Kia did not stop selling the K900. Very weird strategy going on with these brands!
