There was a guy i knew in school , back in the 80's , he was a couple of grades below me , but he had a 46 or 47 flat fender all stock drive train with a lift kit and 33's on it , he carried a big coffee can with him and when he got to school hed jump out and put the coffee can under it to catch3 the oil coming out and pour it back in when he left to ho home . Lol
Fred dig the vids. My buddy works for a re-man place and the pumps from all cars that have an arm and cam operation, he said always have a little issue with the surface the cam rides on. This came up for me on the same type pump. My fix was silver soldering a bit of feeler gauge to contact surface. this also restored original fuel pressure numbers. hope she gits goin. I dig the flatties!!
Worn fuel pump lobes are common on 134 engines. They used several different pumps over the years with various spacers and arm lengths to add interest to our hobby. Pump kits are good quality and hold up to modern fuel pretty well.
I have a 1965 CJ-5 with the f-head 134 motor. The dual-action fuel pump/vacuum pump was leaking oil. I am not using the vacuum wipers so I just wanted to replace the dual action pump with a single action (fuel only ) pump. Napa sold me the same pump that they sold you (B-0011-P). It didn't work -- too much play in the pump lever before it moves the diaphragm. Took it back, they gave me another one but it also had too much free play in the pump lever.
Dude!!! All my God!!! That video was the example of the troubles everyone has to deal with every time they work on their projects!!! But you fixed the fuel pump!!!lol!!! great video!!!✌️
I had to do that too because the old diaphram failed but the new pump valves failed in a month so I mixed and matched and its been good. I think the diaphram just unhooks from the arm when you compress the spring
Napa has great mechanical fuel pumps that hold up to the garbage modern fuel. DO NOT GET AUTOZONE OR OREILLYS mechanical fuel pumps. I went through 9 pumps in 7 days the fuel ate the Dial frame and they would just stop pumping or start pumping fuel onto the ground. Through the weep hole that was 5 from O'Reillys and 4 from auto zone. Got one from Napa and it's working great 2 years later
Thanks Fred! Reminded me of my younger days helping my dad work on cars. 😊 You should do a segment on how things work! Maybe the younger generation will pickup on it!
Then there's the fuel pumps with the vacuum on the other side to run wipers on the M38A1's and CJ5's. I like the fuel pumps with the arm so you can prime them by hand. My M38A1 project is sort of at a standstill as I'm waiting for some parts for the T90. I still need to swap the 24v distributor for a 12v, too... I was hoping to be able to drive this Jeep this summer but it might not be finished by then.
I've never had luck with rebuilt Willys fuel pumps. Had 2 fail right out of the box and another failed soon after installation. All rebuilt in China where they used inferior rubber for the diaphragm. Gave up and installed an electric pump.
Had similar problem with aftermarket Studebaker V8 fuel pump. Arm was not correct shape. Engine sounded like it had a nasty rod knock when I tried it. Ended up switching to an electric pump.
So you have a dead hole and are worried about the fuel pump? Am I missing something here? How about deal with the dead cylinder first. I swear TH-camrs do shit like this just to piss me off.
Just enjoy the journey 😊 But my guess is Fred hopes that if it will run on 3 with the plug out and atf in that dead hole, then maybe the oil and the heat will free the rings. I think it would be quicker to pull the unit and have the head off, but not my jeep, not my problem 😂
@@CalmTFD no you don’t understand. I work in a racing engine machine shop. Running an engine without finding out the problem first is taking a HUGE chance in destroying the engine. Those old engines are getting hard to find. They are still out there, but rare. If he blows it up then original engine is destroyed. Better to take it apart and fix the issue than to blow it up beyond repair. Even if he doesn’t care about the engine, someone else could use it to restore another piece of American history. If it was a modern engine then who cares.

I love the flat fender content.
This is incredibly helpful as I’m getting ready to do the same thing on my ‘46, thanks!!
Loving this Willy’s series Fred!! You’re right in front of where I’m at with mine..
Frankenstein fuel pump, awesome Fred!!

Similar problem, different engine. I put a rounded head screw into the contact area.

I like the fuel pump fix. that's what the old timers who owned these jeeps before us would have done
Been liking these little flat fender trouble shooting vids Fred! Keep cranking them out :-)
I had the glass type on my 63 Jeep. Water would also settle on the bottom of the sight glass.
I really enjoy your videos. I learn a lot!
Joes motor pool fuel pumps work great

Fred, you can also get a basting syringe at the grocery store.
Turkey injector syringe from supermarket works well.
That glass bowl also is a water separate.

that sucks new part no good im not surprised good fix nice to have freinds that know stuff
I love the birds coming into your shop and fussing at you 34:27
This is going to be so fun to drive!!!

I thought I heard you say “Welcome to Nerd Daily” 😂
The bird just came in to tell you about your extended car warrenty 😂😂
The NAPA website says the new pump fits various Jeeps/Willys from 1945 - 1973 .
Old Hyster fork lifts and perhaps a farm tractor may use that exact fuel pump.
Went through the same thing with my 3b. Bought a new one that didn’t work and ended up combining parts with a spare pump that came with the jeep
Had similar problem with aftermarket Studebaker V8 fuel pump. Arm was not correct shape. Engine sounded like it had a nasty rod knock when I tried it. Ended up switching to an electric pump.
If onx is sponsoring you that would be awesome to see that flatfender painted or wrapped onx colors
im not painting it.
Fred feeding the jeep a little tylan 200.
I went through 3 "parts store" fuel pumps on my M38 that were junk.
ya new pump no brainer good video
the syringe... is that a "Fred Williams fuel injector"?
Make sure all gaskets and fuel lines are for e85 fuel or else you will keep having problems with the furl system.
Given the age of the Jeep, it's very likely it's lead residue from back when that was still a thing.
Looks like the rebuild kit is the way to go then, unless the quality is not there either?
Hey Fred what type of lift is that and the capacity? Do you like it? is it wide enough for bigger projects??
Aftermarket is junk. I just replaced my hubs and the snap ring was too big. Couldn't fit had to cut it.
“It’s time for dirt daily” in an instant my wife knows I’m in a Jeep induced coma for atleast half an hour.
So she leaves me alone haha.
It took me forever on mine to figure out that there’s two thicknesses of fuel pump spacers and the wrong one will kinda work
Curious if you noticed the mystery hole in the new pump body while you had it apart? Factory or wear? Great videos! Look forward to every one.
its just worn out corrosion
Probably the same fuel pump for a lot of older power plants and/or farm equipment.
Pump with bowl is same as old Ford 9n tractors...
You should definitely go electric, they never fail…..
😅
yeah right
I miss vehicles that can be fixed this way.
Use on x and let the corrupt track your every move easier.
Zen for men....
"Scungy". Its an industry term.
One word . Ethanol
Correct me if I'm wrong but 99% of the glass sediment bowl pumps/filters mount bowl down.
You're not wrong but on jeeps they go up.
I feel like that engine barely has enough horsepower to run that fuel pump.

I’d try to make it run on 3 cylinders and see what happens. Probably not much to lose there, and at least you could say you heard it run once.
