Love the beautiful views!! The calf with the straw on its head and face was so cute- like a toddler who dumped his plate of spaghetti over the head - spaghetti straw! Thanks for sharing! Take care!
That's a great idea with the round bale it will be interesting to see how it works out . I can't believe the extremely low price to get for the wool, someone is making a hell of a lot of money out of it at your expense . Thank you for, another fantastic video I look forward to your next. ❤👍
Good job noticing the calf wasn’t feeling well, your quick action def saved its life,as they can go down hill fast. Watching the lovely sunrises and animals in the field makes farming so worthwhile
We always fed hay to our 'pasture grown' beef cattle every day during Winter, because just like everywhere nothing grows in winter here apart from cultivation planted Oats, Black Barley etc and that was always for the dairy herd. Before the advent of round bales it was the little square bales and dad would slowly drive along and I would cut and feed out the bale segments to the cattle so all got something to eat. We often rolled out our round bales too and for the reasons you said Joanna, 'pecking order, trampled stinking foot rotting mess around the feeders' etc. IMHO both ways have their pros and cons. I do know with rolling out though that for the initial first feed the whole herd would get a feed whereas with those higher in the pecking order hogged the feeders and often when they'd finish feeding they'd move on to other parts of the field and the others would quickly follow them after eating little or no hay. As time went by it showed in their growth. There is undoubtedly much more waste with rolling out but for us it did let the less assetive get that initial first decent feed of the day. I do realise it's a far different paradigm though for us here in South-east Queensland Australia where we have lots of frosts in winter but no snow. Joanna, you've had some very hard decisions to make and implement but IMHO like all farmers you know the right way to go for the particular rural economic times you find yourself in. Farming, unfortunately is a fluid business with ever changing parameters and scenarios thrust in the farmer's face and because if this you know what steps are needed to be taken. IMHO you're doing great and you will always have my support for as long as I'm still breathing. Loved the sound of the bells. Take care Joanna.
Hi Joanna excellent video again thanks. The Highlands look awesome, listening to them eating is so relaxing you could stand there watching and listening for ages. Thanks again take care and be safe 👍 😊.
the rolling out the bale method works great - you wait till spring when the grass starts growing again - you will see where you have rolled out the bales - youtuber Farmer Tyler Ranch (USA) has started doing this just this year and already is seeing new growth in 6 weeks (his weather is warmer) - NZ we have thrown out hay since I was a kid - lots of old method are now being brought back in because they work - you loose some hay but you gain great grass which is cheaper than reseeding a field
Depressing weather especially if you've depending on solar or wind to power the country. Your cows will love the nice warm dry bed you've given them, but sure its worth a try. Lovely video.
hey wow so soon again a video of dale farm. i love the landscape of dale farm it is always so quiet i love it. and you film it and tell it so beautifully. and those cattle are really beautiful and nice. yes the weather is really weird the last months here in the Netherlands too. is also way too warm for the time of year. i thought it was a nice video again i cant wait for the next one. have fun at the techno party. 😘🤠🍁🍂🇳🇱
Reminds me of that poem I think where it goes through a load of no's and at the end says November. The only good thing about anticyclone gloom is that it isn't raining. Great to see all the cattle. Hope we don't get too bad a winter. All the best 🇬🇧.
Hi, Joanna. There's one other potential benefit of rolling out hay that I didn't hear you mention. Depending on what type of grass you grow to make hay, rolling out the hay helps to "reseed" the pasture. Farmer Tyler Ranch (another TH-cam creator) has noticed some initial benefits to it. But it's possible the negatives still far outweigh the positives in your situation.
Hi Joanna, Some lovely early morning shots, it's a beautiful part of the country. It's so peaceful and it's lovely to hear the church bells ringing in the distance. The Highland cow's and calves look great. I think this type of breed are my favourite...😃👍🏻
"Baa Baa black sheep, have you any wool?" "Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full." This nursery rhyme immediately came to mind when you mentioned "three bags full." These are the only lines I recalled of an nursery rhyme learned ages ago. Didn't remember the rest so I looked it up and it's short and catchy. From early 18th century England. Now, the Highland cattle: An iconic look recognizable anywhere. Especially the shaggy coats and those long, sharp, pointy things on their heads, something they have in common with the equally iconic Texas Longhorn cattle. Except Longhorns don't seem to need as much brushing. . .
Hi Joanna and Nick . Beutiful scenery , the c highlanders look so good . They ruined the wool industry with synthetics . Its so sad . Because wool is so good and versatile . Thankyou for the lovly vidio . I think the hay rolled out it too compacted . Needs a pitchfork to fluff it up 😅.
Joanna, and Nick, the Highland cattle look great. I know it’s a little bit gray for you, but you really do have such a beautiful farm. I think you definitely speak about the frustration these days as a farmer, and the challenges that face you on a daily basis. In my opinion, you should be rewarded for what you do financially, and then it should be going down from there. You are doing the work, and creating the product. I imagine you speak for so many other people in the farming business, and the difficulties which comes from this business. Trust your intuition, keep in your heart, and allow the next chapter in the beautiful life of Joanna and Nick to be written. Always sending you the very best, and thanks for sharing your world. ❤🙏🏼
Jo you and nic are the best we in essex love your way of .life we visited your part of the country years ago but missed you what a dissapointmemt just luv to follow.w u now keep it up xx
Best wishes for great health to all the wonderful people involved with Dale Farm, to all the viewers and the 4 legged creatures as well doing the coming winter. Greetings from Denmark.
Hi girl that was a lovely video of your cattle and your working hard with your sheep and cattle and that's a lovely Scenery and lovely sky sun ☀ to your looking so pretty girl xx yourself xxxx❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Been rolling out bales for 20 odd years here, admittly its a little drier here, but the "waste" adds to the land like manure, and i expect you'll be able to see the areas the bales were rolled on next year.
Should get more money following the Shearing & Love the Murmuration you filmed & those Red Orange Skies Yes that Anti-Cyclonic Gloom no sunshine for days on end was horrible. Agree Rolling out the Hay not working better in the Ring-Feeder when you repair it albeit for the Muddy stomping. You have a Brilliant way of filming Joanna Amazing Love to you & Nick & The Highlands the One with Hay on his Face like Dawn French in a Chocolate Fountain. Pleased the Calf got over the Pneumonia David xx
it was like this in my part of Canada so bad you could inhale and feel the water in your mouth and now snow and snow squalls for last few days hugsssssss
Hi Joanna. We are on pretty much the same equatorial plane as you here in Newfoundland it has rained every day for over a month ! So depressing. I lmow the feeling ! Beautiful cattle so chin up! Cheers 😊
Bet next year where u rolled out the hay you will see a nice green grass growth ,,, Cattle probably waste some of it but it will fertilise the field ❤❤❤❤
From what I’ve seen you should see a greening up from any left rotting and improving the soil. I do think you will need to do it in different areas and rotate fields. There is some really interesting stuff from those who give the cattle a days grazing and keep moving them. The roots go down much deeper than permanent pasture method giving a better soil structure allowing cattle to remain outside making less mess. But it does create work moving electric fences and water troughs.
Can't believe the cows still have all their eyes....with those horns around.....there's an attachment you can put that round bail on and you can unroll it with the 4 wheeler...
You are a great farmer making great videos! Just a thought about the wool - you are so creative so maybe you could make your own Dale Farm Yarn and sell it in an online Dale Farm Shop or sell to your camp site guests?
Nice video, speaking from my own experience....when you're in the field with the tractor with the bale spike on, either move it away and park spike in hedge or carry something in the cab to put on the tip...if it's up and close when your out rolling the bales cattle can easily be pushed onto it.....best luck
The sunshine pictures are beautiful. Living in the upper Ohio River valley, winter is mostly overcast and somewhat gloomy. At least we seldom have fog. The cows are looking healthy with good coats.
Well its December the 1st here in the Southern United States we've had very cold weather is it going to be in the twenties at night for at least 10 days in the northern states are having snow storms and blizzards so yes I would say you're going to have a rough winter so all we can do is smile and look to the spring and remember red sky in the morning is a sailor's warning 😁😆👌😉🐝
Gotta admit I’m not sure about rolling hay out 😬. My mate does it but he stacks his hay outside so doesn’t mind loosing the outside layers. Good thing is it puts seed and bulk/ vegetation back in the soil 🤷♂. Can but try with it 🙂
First I want to say how extremely beautiful you are Joanna, I love your British accent also. We raise a lot of sheep hear in the US. We hire our sheep sheared and then the shearer always buys all of our wool. Our biggest money comes from selling our lambs. We grain them with some of our Iowa corn. We try to get them nice and fat before we sell.
Love The Highland cattle.,good eye on spotting the wee calf being poorly., poor toot., xx How many Highlands have you got now? Weather up here Aberdeenshire Scotland we’ve had sudden snowfall., -5then gusty wind., took few days for ice to melt., through the week it got up to 11”.., just not our normal weather patterns for good few years now.,xx
if u do not want to un roll a whole bale you can stop half way and turn the bale up on its end and put a rope around it and lift it away with the loader .......the rope will stop the bale from breaking up .....u could use a ratchet strap also ......... u are correct that the ground needs to be dry for it too work .......well spotted with the calf .......u would need eyes in the back of your head .......good weather for pneumonia ..... have calves to wean here and am waiting for some cold windy weather to do it
Lovely highland cattle but are they profitable. At what height is the farm if you are on the edge of the moor, is Nick full time on the farm or has he another job, will be interesting where U go forward with the farm.
I've seen haty fed like that in regenerative farming. the idea is to feed the cattle where you want to improve the grass, but rather than rolled out. it's forked into heaps. the idea is that they leave their dung where its most needed.
I was talking to a couple of brother who have a joinery business and we’re at my house they farm about 60 acres with Charolais and limisoun beef cattle and they have recently lost 3 beast dead, which I suppose is partially down to -3 one day 13/15 next day. Is there a little less pressure on the farm with the sheep reductions or perhaps will that only kick in mainly over lambing?
That is the only way to feed that haylage seems to be a lot of mould cattle will pick good bits out of it how many plastic wraps on it 😮 the dryer the silage the more wraps it needs 16 wraps for wet silage 24 wraps for dry nice cattle 😊
I noticed a few hornless cattle. Were they dehorned or are there polled Highland cattle? Greetings from Iowa. 15 F here this morning, our sun has gone away after sunny early morning.
Geoenginering and chemtrails is another weapon used to destroy farmers, this years lambing was shocking like yourselves, and im expecting the exact same thing next year. We are getting battered from every direction, and we all know its just a massive land grab. Great to see you on here, im late to the party but enjoyed watching born mucky when you were on, Sorry to hear about your dad, but im sure hell be proud of you and nick continuing his legacy!
Why do you keep all hyland cattle why not get into angus and cross them with the limousine bull Get out of sheep maybe keep a few texel cross ewes to run through the cattle best of luck with your future in farming 👍👍
Love the beautiful views!! The calf with the straw on its head and face was so cute- like a toddler who dumped his plate of spaghetti over the head - spaghetti straw! Thanks for sharing! Take care!
Hoping clear skies and sunshine head your way.
Love seeing the Highland cattle.
Well done .hard working brilliant couple.all best to you both.you deserve it
I don't think there is anything cuter in the cow world than a Highland baby face.
That's a great idea with the round bale it will be interesting to see how it works out .

Great video again ,they do seem to waste a lot of hay from rolling it out. Good to see the calf running along now 😊

Way to be a progressive farmer! Every "discovery" began with an experiment. Love seeing more of your Highlands!
First time I have ever heard the bells of the village church, reminds you of country village life .
Some lovely close-ups of the beasts Joanna - I hope they continue to thrive and make life worthwhile for you both. 🥸

The cows did appreciate a dry mattress to lie on.
Enjoyed photography Joanna well done 👍
You sure live in a beautiful area of the country. A great video again

Kept a few more cattle easer than sheep no more lambing
A month of gray mist would be depressing.
we had a day last week of fog and it hovered around 0 all day ......was not nice felt cold ........
@@georgedoorley5628lots of that in Eastern Europe! Hi from my rural channe!😊
Just wondering do all the highlands have horns?
Wool prices is rubbish , can pay over £100 for wool jumpers 🤬 , highlands Brighten up any day 👍🇬🇧

Waste alot of hay
I think they'd be less likely to trample all over it if it was forked up.
Weather manipulation.
How come you are getting shitty prices for your lambs and other people are saying prices are great for their lambs
To much waste
First
