  • Need to make a tunic or dress but don’t know where to start….look no further!
    This series overview video is a brief introduction to the new series i'm working on- How to Make a Simple Viking Age Tunic (Kirtle) or Dress.
    This series is aimed at beginners, but still may contain some handy hints for those who are a few years in. It is by no means the only way to make this simple garment, but it's one that works well for me. I’ve tried, tested and improved on it over the last 5 years with every one I have made.
    So, we are going to start at the very beginning with tools and equipment you will need, how to get a good set of measurements that you can use for a variety of garments, how to add in ease, make your own pattern diagrams and cutting plans, choose fabric and prep it for cutting and then how to make each part of the garment broken down into sections.
    Each video in the series will lead on to the next, so we have our groundwork solid before we move on to the next step. I will try and get them out as regularly as I can but please bear with me as I battle some health stuff, roadworks outside my front window (yay) and start of the season group admin responsibilities!
    There will be PDF’s to go with many of the videos, with written instructions and printable record sheets you can use to keep track of your experiments, as well as a step by step guide to the sewing process that will be released once the series is finished.
    I’m really excited about this project. It was the first idea I had for the channel but I wanted to wait until I had a bit more experience making videos before jumping into it, and now here we are!
    Let me know if there is anything in particular you would like me to add into this series, or other things you would like me to add to my list of videos to make in the future, if I can help, I will!
    Thank You so much for watching folks, as always, if you have any questions or feedback, pop it in the comments below or come and find me on facebook!
    With thanks to Jim King for the photograph of a stellar basic kit. :)

    I want to start historic sewing and I've decided that a Viking dress will be my first project. I'm so glad I found your video

      That's brilliant. :) Viking is a great place to start with historic sewing. The next episode in the series will be out soon. :)

    I really love and appreciate your videos. My little bit of input is the importance of hanging a garment before hemming, ESPECIALLY when using fabrics like linen that are NOTORIOUS for relaxing and thereby changing shape and looking all wobbly and weird later. A lot of people recommend 24 hours, but i'm an advocate for 48 hours if you can stand waiting that long. It really makes a big difference in the finished garment and saves the heartache of re-hemming metres of hemline later on.

      Absolutely. Have you found that pressing/ ironing well makes a difference? I press between each step, and I've found it really helps minimise the amount of wobbly hems I have had!

    Excited for this series. I have many a number of tunics simple to more complicated. But there’s always something slightly off with the side pieces or them hemming. That tunic you used as an example is just wow. Beautiful seams.
    Thank you for working hard on this. 😊

      My pleasure. :) it's taking longer than I hoped to get ready, due to life circumstances, but the first episode is half filmed now, so we are on our way!

      @@WyrdKindred life does always get in the way. Although all of here want this series here and now. Don’t let anyone pressure you into pushing out videos too fast. You’ll burn yourself out and we wouldn’t want that. ☺️

    Thank you! So excited! Greetings from Uruguay! I think this project will be a great start point for the younger generation of D&D players here :) Not much of Vikings but in the fantasy lands who knows?

    I am very much looking forward to this series. I’ve attempted a tunic before and bought a linen tunic kit. With no instructions. Watching someone do everything step by step will be incredibly helpful in my future tunic making endeavors. ❤

      Glad you like them! This tutorial series covers tunics ( Kirtles) and dresses, so is suitable for both, the only difference in a basic garment for any gender is the length through most of the Viking Age.

    Thank you for doing this, Im definitely going to need it!
    Would be nice to know where can I buy wool, linen or silk sewing thread online though, as all I can find is cotton around here. And I really dont want to use that or the modern stuff :(

      Supplies can be a challenge for sure. Are you in the UK?

    • @dan_the_dj
      @dan_the_dj 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WyrdKindred no, Im on the continent, but outside of EU, likewise. If you know some UK based vendors or any other across the channel, it would be of much help to hear a few recommendations.
      Im not in a rush though, as Id prefer to watch each video as it comes out and then rewatch once its complete and sew along :)

      This is not a video series that I need, but that I absolutely WOULD have needed when starting out! A competent teacher guiding through each step of the progress, with clear and simple visual instructions. This will be a great resource for anyone that's interested in trying to sew their own tunic. Thank you!
      I think one of the things that I felt was most important when starting out was to make a LOT of mockups! I bought loads of thrift store sheets of low quality (leaving the better quality for those who need them for their beds) and just went ham on them, cutting and sewing wildly and learning along the way. Not only to test for fit, but also for hammering in the techniques! When I finally bought my expensive wool and linen, I was much more confident in my pattern, cutting and sewing, even when presented with materials that behaved differently. Plus an unexpected bonus: having a couple extra tunics with fun kid sheet cartoon print or horrible floral motives for lounge wear at home is really nice!

      That's the same for everybody in the reenactment world. Would you be able to visit some viking markets in your region? The people there who are working with wool or selling textiles will be happy to share information.

    • @dan_the_dj
      @dan_the_dj 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davinki2885 Im not aware of any festivals in my country that have markets like that. Even if they did, almost no one uses real wool and certainly not real wool/linen sewing thread sadly.
      My best bet is if somebody knows an etsy store or something like that.
