    I'm the same way about accents in the UK & surrounding areas. I have a guy friend I talk to all the time. He's in Scotland. He doesn't understand why we women in the USA find the accent charming. I can't explain it but it is. Have a wonderful week! ✌️👍🤓💖

    When you live in a place as opposed to just passing through like a tourist you take it with you as a part of your life that you will never forget. I was working in St. Thomas VI for 5 months and it made me appreciate the islands and the experience of living there day to day. Ash, all the best!

    I'm a Cockney from London. You summed it up nicely! Not many have a Sunday Roast at home nowadays (it's mainly a certain generation). It's easier to go the pub and have a pint or two and a roast. I used to fly around the world for 12 years. After 750 flights I hung up my wings. There was nothing like the British Airways crew bringing me a cuppa! I loved all the places I flew to, but everything is in the right place here! Like today, I took a drive to the Kent coast. Had a bit of breakfast and a tea watching the sea come in. Then took a drive to a 14th century pub in the beautiful Kent North Downs, before driving back to London. Lovely day!
    Great vlog. Glad you liked your time here 😊

    Ash. I commented in your last video about The USA. This UK video sure has me missing things that I grew up with in Britain...things that I took for granted and never really appreciated about the culture and country until moving to the USA in 2003. The rural pubs and friendly people, the Sunday roasts and tea with some chocolate biscuits. The rolling countryside and rambling trails. The ragged coastline, listening to the birds singing in the mornings. I could go on and on but yes, there are loads of things I miss about the UK too. Oh, the dry humour and, as you said, "taking the piss". Yes, this video also has me reminiscing and missing my home country. I hope you can get back there one day, and make it your home.

    This was how I felt when I went to Scotland. I have never felt so "at home" in a place that I've never been before. Edinburgh was beautiful and amazing, but when I went up to Inverness....oh man, it was my soul I think. I felt so comfortable and relaxed and present. It really did feel like I was meant to be there. The people too, so friendly and welcoming. I loved everything!

    • @kittwilliams1974
      @kittwilliams1974 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s exactly how I felt. Immediately I felt like I was among my people in Scotland. And if I were to move there, I probably would choose Inverness. But I loved Edinburgh. It was so easy to get around using their transportation system. It didn’t feel like a big city at all. ❤

    I feel the UK calling me back too! I am also a sucker for their castles, small towns and pubs!
    On our family trips to Europe, I always try to find at least one castle that welcomes overnight guests. Perfect way to combine lodging and exploring the place makes an ideal activity for a day.
    My family and I went to Northern Ireland in 2019. We stayed in a lighthouse keepers cottage and walked down the road each night to the local pub. They had one of those cozy fires going. We had a drink or two, then watched game shows on tv while we ate and played along with the waitress. It was so much fun!
    I've never been there but I can't wait to hear about Hungary!
    God bless you, Ashley.

    You are so right about all the UK things you mentioned Ash, maybe you will get the chance to stay again one day. The thing is that we are surrounded by it all 24/7, we only really notice them when something changes. I have a famous Norman Castle, many famous historic houses, open countryside, beautiful vilages and tourist attractions, all within a short walk or a few miles drive. I have USA friends who comment on my Sheffield, Yorkshire accent that I sound like Joe Elliott, the singer with Def Leppard. You may think our British accents all sound the same, but they can vary drastically over just a few miles. We can often guess the town, or at least the general location where a person is originally from. My USA friends all rave about the things we take for granted in the UK, they would love to visit, or move here, and regularly ask how we don't shout loudly about what our country has to offer. The only answer I can give them is that it's always been here, for centuries, we just don't really get excited about those things we can visit at will.

    Ash, very interesting that you mention the freedom in the UK to roam in the countryside and Sunday lunch, they quite often go together, family's meet walk and then eat together before going their different ways to meet up 7 days later.
    Having spent time in Spain and Portugal I have seen the same thing.
    Try Burgos, Leon(entry to picos de europa) or the Asturias region(left for Asturias after Leon right for San Vicente de la Barquera, and Santander(route back to the UK), fantastic areas to walk and commune in, Burgos is on the comino to Santiago de Compostela(watch "The Way"), after seeing your USA videos you enjoy a challenge. Best of luck in Hungary.

    Hi Ashley, the tea culture in UK sounds very much the same as we have here in Finland but instead of tea we have the coffee here. There is some kind of ritual here to expect to be served coffee but never asked for it. Usually the one who you visit ask would you like to have coffee and make some coffee. When it's ready they ask the visitors to come to the table and have some coffee but usually the guests don't go after the first invitation but maybe after second or third then it's ok to go to the table. This is something I haven't seen anywhere else in the world.
    I also felt in love with the UK after my first trip abroad when I was a student and we went a study trip to London to watch the work the guide do. London was a place I wanted to go back to but it was the one and only visit I did to London in 1992 but since that I have done many trips to Yorkshire area places like York, Leeds, Manchester and Esholt, that's an area I warmly can recommend you to visit if you will have the possibility.

    A lot of the pubs in Britain were originally Inns or coaching houses. These were places for the weary traveller to rest overnight or for coach travellers to have some food whilst the horses were changed over. There used to be Inns in the U.S. also, but perhaps unlike the U.K. they did not retain & repurpose them.

I also love the castles , the rolling hills, the accents. I collect British movies, I have about 300 of them. I love British history. Especially the kings and queens. I watch every British documentary I’m interested in. And guess what? I’ve never had the privilege of visiting England.😊 I love England so much, that my daughter and son in law named my new granddaughter London. There used to be an Irish Pub where I live called Durty Nellie's. Open fire with a big stone fireplace, those big comfy leather wingback Chesterfield chairs, pint of Guinness & a game of giant jenga. Really nice at Christmas or whenever it's super cold outside just cosy and warm. And also, hearing you curse. I was shocked. Shocked! I tell you. Haha. Funny. I wonder how foreigners might receive that British dry "piss taking" sense of humour sometimes. It's a sign that people feel endeared towards you that they do that. Something that you don't consider until someone points it out? Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the UK. Can be lovely place. We stopped in Ramsbottom a while back. In these, they were like little two person gypsies caravans in a field being woken up by sheep & at night around the campfire with family and friends drinking and talking. It was a magical few days. Not far from where I live, but made me appreciate what we have on our doorstep.

    Hey Ash. Pleased you enjoyed my home country. However I'm interested what you consider a Welsh, Scottish or English accent? As they change every 30 miles or so and sometimes the local slang with it?
    The always raining in the UK is partly a myth based on scientific evidence. The West side of the UK does get a lot of rain but the East side is much drier including London. Did you know London is much drier than New York?
    Hope you can come back to the UK soon and do all the things you love! Sitting in a country pub round a blazing open fire on a cold winter's day with a cool pint is one of my favourites!!

    There's only one thing for it Ash, you'll have to move back to the UK. We need you here, only this time come up to Yorkshire to live. We might have a reputation for having a blunt exterior, but you'll soon realise that inside we're warm and friendly with a bit of a broad accent. We'd absolutely love to have you, we'll be waiting....

    I'm british and live in London. I would say there are regional variations on how friendly people are to travellers. Apart from the service industry there is an ongoing joke about how londoners don't make eye contact and avoid any communication with strangers while (particularly people in the North of England) are over friendly, to the extent saying hello to someone you dont know is considered a big crime in London! We dont even say thank you to bus drivers. This is partly because London has a lot of informal rules in order to manage transport and busy places and keeping people moving!

    Add to your list the amazing charity shops where you can find interesting, high-quality items for a song! Also, there is a greater availability of FRESH foods and foods from other parts of Europe. How about the huge hazelnut chocolate bars for about 1/10 of the price they cost in the USA?!! People in small towns and villages help one another. The people act with a bit more common sense. The USA is going through unsettling puberty and teenage rebellion while the UK is the adult in the room!

      @@jason4275I am Scottish and I can tell you that there is no such thing as "a" Scottish accent. Surprisingly, for such a small country, there is no single Scottish accent but numerous accents, depending on which part of the country you are in. A Glasgow accent is distinctly different from an Edinburgh accent, which in turn is very different to an Aberdeen accent. And a Dundee accent is different again. And there are different accents in the South West, the Borders, the Highlands, the Western Isles, Orkney, Shetland, etc. I am from Edinburgh. Most of the time I cannot understand what somebody from Aberdeen is saying.

      @@lorddaver5729 Kelly Macdonald has the best Scottish accent I ever heard, and if you don't understand an accents that's because they are speaking informal Scottish, doesn't matter if it's English, American, British or Scottish, you would never write a school essay using informal English, when speaking informal you don't write the way they speak otherwise you would fail that essay.

    • @lorddaver5729
      @lorddaver5729 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jason4275 Firstly, I don't care about Kelly Macdonald's accent. Secondly, badly spoken English, in the guise of a regional accent, such as one from Aberdeen, can still be unintelligible. I KNOW it is informal English. Please don't insult my intelligence. But that doesn't make it any more intelligible. And most who speak with a strong local accent in Scotland are disinclined to change how they speak if someone says "Could you say that again, in formal English?" So what are you supposed to do when faced with a bloody-minded Aberdonian who refuses to change their speech to plain, or "formal", English? And my original point remains valid. There is not one Scottish accent but numerous regional accents in Scotland. Finally, what do you mean "British or Scottish"? As a Scot I AM British. British does not solely mean English, as you obviously think. Britain is the geographic name for the largest of the British Isles. It comprises Scotland, England and Wales. The Scots, English and Welsh are all British.
