The only thing I dont understand is the spur comment. Anyone knows jeans do that anyway with or without spurs. Every pair I ever owned ends up torn up on the back of the cuff.
Research on the trade of jean fabric shows that it emerged in the cities of Genoa, Italy, and Nîmes, France. Gênes, the French word for Genoa, may be the origin of the word "jeans". In Nîmes, weavers tried to reproduce jean fabric but instead developed a similar twill fabric that became known as denim, from de Nîmes, meaning "from Nîmes". Genoa's jean fabric was a fustian textile of "medium quality and of reasonable cost", very similar to cotton corduroy for which Genoa was famous, and was "used for work clothes in general". The Genoese navy equipped its sailors with jeans, as they needed a fabric which could be worn wet or dry. Nîmes's "denim" was coarser, considered higher quality, and was used "for over garments such as smocks or overalls". Nearly all indigo, needed for dyeing, came from indigo bush plantations in India until the late 19th century. It was replaced by indigo synthesis methods developed in Germany.
Yes there are a pair of jeans there in Italy but not the oldest the oldest jeans I’ve seen were in a museum in Genoa which these jeans were made in 1795 by Jean Gabriel Eynard and his brother Jacques who went to Genoa name Jean-Gabriel Eynard and his brother both were soon heading a flourishing commercial concern. In 1800 Massena's troops entered the town and Jean-Gabriel was entrusted with their supply. In particular he furnished them with uniforms cut from blue cloth called "bleu de Genes" whence later derives the famous garment known worldwide as "blue jeans".
Levi Strauss and the Strauss family were the American Dream personified. All entrepreneurs should aspire to be like them. They found success by treating people fairly and having great foresight and vision as far as creating and managing the development of a great quality product is concerned. If they keep up with the quality and strong marketing, the Levi's brand will endure forever. God Bless Capitalism and The United States Of America!!!
Yeah, until they moved all their production out of the country for cheaper labor, but continued to raise the price. Thanks to Socialist like Barack Obama, the worst president this country has ever seen since Jimmy Carter.
_[edit: oh, I didn't see earlier how old this comment is - I wouldn't have replied if I had realized that earlier]_ @DaftSwank: Then you must really love liberal immigration politics ;-) How does it fit into the American Greatness myth that Levi Strauss was a German Jew? Also: Nothing against capitalism, but let's not forget that much of America's wealth was mostly due to a long history of exploitation: first stolen land from indiginous people, then slavery, then cheap labor, done mostly by marginalized black and hispanic citizens. Many genuine american achievements were only possible from the comfortable position of few exploiters. "From rags to riches" is a nice propaganda fairytale and while rare exceptions like Levi Strauss admittedly could make believe that there's more truth to it, this stands against the people who worked in the factories and did the real work - and under which conditions and for what kind of salary? For the average Joe it's more like "from rags to rags" and always has been. Today, in a more modern world, where all this exploitation is more and more questioned and cameras are everywhere to see injustice and expose it on Social Media only minutes later, America mysteriously goes done the drain. Housing crisis, opioid crisis, healthcare crisis, political division, national debts... In reality, success sadly rarely comes from treating people fairly - at least American history is evidence to the contrary, or you really must have forgotten slavery and racism. And why do you think Levi's no longer produces in the USA, but mostly in Bangladesh? Because "treating people fairly" has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the business philosophy. Oh, and the quality is shit, too. Try to find a pair of jeans these days that has more than the bare minimum of cloth thickness (even for winter fashion). Jeans as "worker pants" are long dead. I said above "nothing against capitalism...". This may now sound like a contradiction. It's not: it's about responsible capitalism. Just take a look at a country like Sweden: no history of slavery of any noteworthy colonialism or racial marginalization, instead a long history of social responsibility towards employees (not only on paper) and citizens in general: health insurance, free education all the way up to university level, generous regulations for maternity leaves, etc... and still, this is a country with stable economic prosperity, intact infrastructure, etc.. This is just one example, but there are dozens more countries on this Earth that are doing much better than the USA. Sure, none of them have sent astronauts to the moon, but the USA has also quite a big population. For better comparison, break it down to state level and the achievements aren't so impressive any more. May "god" show these United States of America how ridiculous all that pride is and teach them a lesson in humility!
I think I know which ones you are talking about. However, those aren’t denim... they were made of soft, thick cotton that were patched with denim. Here’s the you tube video reference: th-cam.com/video/hFmzyUSarVY/w-d-xo.html
@@LordMitac I bought a pair of round house jeans and they reminded me of the old shrink to fit and they've worn like them too. White around the knees and patterns around the crutch. Amazing jeans for the price.

Um, sturdy, blue-dyed denim work pants predate Mr. Levi by several decades. There are surviving examples that go back to about 1840.
