  • Come along with Sophie and I as we go for a 5KM kicksled run on a Sunday in January. A local group, Snowmotion, organizes outings to keep you and your dog in shape during the winter. Lots of fun for the dog and me, and we keep in shape for hiking season!
    My Sled is an Esla T7
    Canadog Harness
    Purchased at Canvasback Pet Supplies www.canvasbackpets.com/

    Thanks to my daughter for editing this for me!

    I just happened to stumble across this channel looking up kicksledding ideas, what a small world! We picked up a rescue from Little Grand last winter, and this year I'm getting into skijoring. Just yesterday we started practicing some commands in his harness. Depending on how well he does, I might build a kicksled from used xc skis for the old lady to use.

    Greetings from Montana! I've been bike-joring with my Trout. we've been waiting for enough snow to try the kick sled....and today is the day!

    This looks like an absolute blast. Hopefully they make brakes for these rigs ( thinking of my Akita 🤣).

    Ive been trying to research this a bit more and came across your video. I thought the licence plates looked oddly familiar, then the park! That definitely looks like a blast for the dogs, I think I might need to give this a try with our husky mix who has a love of pulling.

    That’s awesome. A tired pup is a happy pup. How are her paw pads doing in this weather? My dog is using booties but is still getting dry chapped paws.

      The pads are fine, she walks on lots of city pavement so they get toughened up but if it is below about -25C we do use booties. Snow between the toes and ice balls are more problematic. I stop and remove them and can use the booties if necessary. I tried a wax - but don't care for it.

    Very impressed with your DIY muks and anorack. Havent had a chance to check all your videos, but did you do a DIY video on your muks and anorack. And if not, would you be willing to share the patterns you used?

      I didn't do a video on them, wasn't sure they would turn out! I did post detailed progress on the wintertrekking forums under a thread entitled moccasins or mukluk's. The user name is Gearfreak.

    How did you mount your camera to your sled? I have to hold mine and I keep dropping it lol Great run btw.

      I used a small flexible tripod and zip ties! It was a fun run. Thanks for watching!

    We have two mixed breed rescue pups that love to run and pull. Do you know if a two dog pull setup is practical?

      If your in Manitoba reach out to either snowmotion (Winnipeg) or crazy jumpers in the interlake. They can answer your question.

      I just posted a video today that includes a 2 dog setup with a kicksled. It's totally doable. The only difference is it's nice to have a drag mat.

    Really enjoyed watching you and your dog kicksledding. We just finished the 6 week long "Iron Paws" (virtual) Staged Mushing Race 2019. Have you heard of it? I think you and your lovely dog would really enjoy joining in with your kicksled next year. Participants use all kinds of mushing equipment like sleds, kicksleds, fat/bikes, carts, canicross. We used our kicksled and Chalo Sulky....its great for beginners and recreational mushers. You get to decide how far and often you'd like to mush each week. Check it out if you are interested..also, love your mukkluks and anorack

      Thanks Kerryjane for the kind words. The muk's and anorak are DIY projects from a few years ago. I think I saw some comments on the virtual race on twitter - Check out one of the reporters for Outside Magazine, Blair Braverman, on Twitter. She is running the Iditarod this year and has a very active group of supporters.

    What is the name of that jacket?

    • @alphawhiskyadventures
      @alphawhiskyadventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s DIY. It is an anorak based on the Conover pattern in the book “A snow walkers companion”. Check out Lure of the North. They run workshops and sell kits as well.

      She actually loves to pull, keep in mind that this is recreational and the majority of the dogs are house pets who do this once or twice a week. When you pull out the harness she goes nuts with excitement and happiness. Like doing any exercise - we can both be tired at the end.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our dogs also love it. If they didn't, they wouldn't pull, and certainly wouldn't spin around, bark, and get so excited every time.
