    We're engine swapping the dead 2.2L 4 cylinder in this 2009 Chevy Cobalt LS that had a little too much coffee. The engine in this car was perfect until a road flooded earlier this year and the car drank quite a bit of that water. Now it's down a cylinder and I've got a new engine ready to drop in. We decided to have some fun and kill it off completely before the old engine heads to the iron yard.

      The lower control arm bolt isn't easy. They made a cage hold the nut and a lot of times the nut will spin out the cage and you will have to get a torch in there to cut it out.

    General comment for Mr. John Ross. Love your videos on finding and fixing up fun older cars. One vehicle that was a great driving sporty car, that has been forgotten, is the second generation 93 to 97 Ford probe GT v6 manual. (It redlined above 7,000) Why can’t I find any videos on these cars? And on autotrader, only 3 are for sale nationwide. Just wanted to share for a possible future video for you. Occasionally, I'll scroll down the comments to see what others are saying...2 people are telling you that you should've taken the engine out from underneath - apparently they've never noticed that you and your friends have conventional garages.... And, in my opinion, you don't flip enough cars to warrant getting even a portable lift. But, at least we've got you using jackstands. :D Maybe those know-it-alls can crowdfund you the support necessary to tear down or retrofit your existing garage w/a service pit on one side, & maybe a 6-ton lift on the other - but what do I know? Just be careful - & keep up the good work!

      Use jack stands and roll the sub frame out. Not hard. Done plenty in driveways and garage

    • @limptera13
      @limptera13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      u use the engine lift to lift the car , when u drop out of the bottom leaving subframe on top of the engine lifts legs,
      but with these cars, u drop the subframes for manuals, but with automatics you can pull from the top

    • @tonymcpherson1958
      @tonymcpherson1958 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Easier out the top, didn't even unhook the ac lines lol. No need to take much off, just starter, exhashast to manifold bolts, torque converter bolts, bell housing bolts, starter and alternator. Left starter wires attached to starter. Unhooked wiring from engine and Unhooked fuel line.

  • @JoelRSmith
    @JoelRSmith 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The nice thing about these cars is that you don't need an engine hoist to remove the engine at all. Best way is to jack the car up, then drop the subframe w/engine & tranny out the bottom using 2 jacks onto a piano dolly or two. Then roll it out the front!

    • @Gabe-ABNCW3
      @Gabe-ABNCW3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Douglas Vines: My honest advice to you is to list what isn’t working and fix one thing at a time. Start with stuff that will get it back on the road first, then move on to things that are more aesthetic in nature.
      There are plenty of forums and channels around that will help you succeed in this.
      Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Take your time and make sure you have a system to organize parts as you remove them such as bagging nuts and bolts or using cardboard to keep track of which bolt goes where.
      Also, make sure you have a torque wrench.
      Best of wishes to you!

    It was hard because you did it the amateur way. Put it up on jack stands and drop it out the bottom. Subframe with rack and control arms attached. Fuse box disassemble. Drop trans out the bottom with the engine as a complete unit. Takes 3.5 hours total out and in! I have literally done a 100 plus, Cobalt's and HHR's....

  • @billymasoner3735
    @billymasoner3735 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    These engines aren’t made to come out from the top. They’re installed from the bottom and are meant to be taken out the same way. Unbolt the subframe and front suspension, disconnect everything, and raise the car up leaving the engine on the floor underneath it.

    The wiring harness can be left entirely intact for removal. Fairly certain I didn't pull the intake either. The only real challenge is unbolting the a/c pump and lashing it out of the way. (I've got the world's biggest hands BTW. Lol). Then just drop the K member. With no exaggeration, I believe I could do my second cobalt engine replacement in 4-5 hours if I had to. The only caveat to that claim, is if the rear subframe nuts start spinning on you, then you're in trouble! I removed mine and replaced them with a couple tangs of 1/2 inch plate steel. Too long to spin in place!

    Cobalt's suck. I had one with 90k miles and the timing chain tensioner had enough slack in it to allow the exhaust valves on cylinder 4 to touch the piston and bend them both. I spent quite a bit of time removing the head and replacing the valves and seats and then replacing all the timing components in my little two car garage with a boat in the other bay with pretty much nothing more than a basic socket set 😂 was still in high school at the time and didn't have a lot of money.
