    02:35 "There are some functions that we want it to have that aren't there yet."
    One very common problem with many software projects is that developers continue to add new functionality and that makes impossible to stabilize the existing code for release. As long as new functionality is added, there will be some unforeseen obstacles and problems, and that leads to more delays, which leads to the desire to add something new in meanwhile, and that cycle never ends. So it is important for any software to have a deadline for all new functionality, after which you have only testing and bug fixing.
    02:48 "We have increased the resources that we're putting at the project."
    When you add resources to a project, keep in mind Brooks's law: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooks%27s_law

    Good luck with your goals and Arabic Steve! I am curious to revisit LingQ when the new version is out, I used it a lot for Spanish but found the parsing to be not that good for Mandarin.
    My main goals this year in Mandarin is to keep reading a lot every morning, if I could read 19 books this year that would be amazing, but not sure how realistically that is now I am reading bigger/longer books. I also want to practice writing a short story/book in Mandarin for creative writing, it's quite a fun idea because now when I read I am paying attention more to short phrases or structures that I could use in the writing part.

      Parsing is an issue in Asian languages unfortunately, it's very tough to get 100% accurate. 5.0 will let users edit sentences with ease to help mitigate the issue (and parsing in general should be improved). Good luck Luke.

    What I would like to see in Lingq (which beyond my control too) is a monthly update by a senior developer or other technical guy, who can explain some of the short term goals, the things the team is struggling with and the prospect of new functionality. I also wonder if it is at all possible to have improvements applied in smaller increments. One the problems I encounter on a daily basis is my reluctance to translate a sentence in sentence mode, because it gets added in an unchangeable way to the sentence number, so that when I alter the text (split a sentence into two sentences), the translation is coupled with the wrong sentence **and I can no longer change this translation, even if it is wrong**. Of course a monthly update would help me as a user to understand what is coming, and when it is coming. I seem to remember seeing talk of lingq 5.0 as early as begin 2020. In sept/okt I asked about it and a developer said they were aiming for november. Having a monthly update would at least help understanding where the team is at and what they are struggling with. That and smaller increments is my wish for the year with regards to Lingq!

    My 2021 lang goals are the JLPTN1 and to advance from basic Mandarin and Russian to intermediate

    • @michaelrespicio5683
      @michaelrespicio5683 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the end it's your call, but some say the JLPT is not worth the time or money. It doesn't test speaking ability and handwriting Japanese is not very useful unless it's for either studying or work in which case there are lots of other places to go than a country with a competitive marketplace and stressful school/work environments.
      Marketable skills and experience are more valuable than meritless certificates that are merely bragging rights on paper. What good is language certification if the test doesn't have a speaking section nor vocabulary related to your program or job? You still need to learn the language anyway to some extent, which defeat the purpose of a test

    • @MikhaelWebb
      @MikhaelWebb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelrespicio5683 Yeah, I guess the Japanese government failed to make it the perfect exam. However, since I’m studying the language anyway and plan on spending a significant amount of time in the country, I figured I would knock it out. There will be plenty of other tests I will take after the JLPT that will test my speaking and handwriting etc (after entering a grad program in Japan). I consider the JLPT my first step up the Japan staircase, not the last one. I will continue working at a US company, but since my job switched to being permanently remote we have the chance to live abroad, so I'm not worried about karoshi, haha

    How much Indonesian and Finnish did you learn? Chances are the Finnish you saw is not actually how natives speak in real life, so here's a quick lesson to spoken language.

      Many people know English and Spanish but never try Tagalog. There are lots of communities around the world, in fact: 25% of nurses worldwide are actually Filipinos, and South Korea with its modern culture would likely not exist today as we know it if not for my countrymen who died so they could prosper. Unlike other cultures, Filipinos will be friends for life if given the chance and will treat anybody as family. If you know English, Spanish, Indonesian, or any combination of these, there's no excuse to skip over it.

    Hello sir, I have a question regarding the 60 mini stories...When you actually finish them and you understand everything in each one of them, in which level realistically speaking a learner is at? (German for instance that's the one im currently learning)

    • @immersionesp4142
      @immersionesp4142 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure but make sure your constantly reviewing the mini stories

    • @Eric-le3uu

      If you can understand them perfectly, I'd say you'd be conversational. However, to understand them perfectly (and similar material) in another language, will still take time.
