    I wish someone would create a video about the later stride sound late 30s to 40s. The left hand technique moved away from the ragtime-ish umpah to the legato tenth walks pioneered by tatum and earl hines. It’s a real beautiful sound.

    Very nice, I can't believe this was three years old before TH-cam sent it my way.
    I am fortunate enough to be blessed with hands that easily stretch a tenth, so I'll be starting with this and then adding some left-hand walk-ups and walk-downs.
    One of my lifelong inspirations has been the late Dr. John. This video seems to provide a solid foundation upon which to build some of Dr. John's famous New Orleans left-hand and right-hand riffs.

    Hey Jonny! I first played this on the trombone and am now returning (many years later) to my first instrument, the piano. As the son of two talented amateur musicians with a piano in their bedroom, you can guess what I was doing at 5:00am every morning as the oldest of three. Cheers!

    As I'm sure you're aware, Jonny, and for anyone interested, instead of playing G min. --> C 7 in the third measure, it's traditionally C Maj./E ---> C Aug./E.

    Hello Jonny, I know I'm about 7 months too late, however I cannot to express how much this lesson helped me, Ain't Misbehavin' is one of my favorite songs from Fats! I also wanted to ask about that bit you were playing at 0:14, is that improv or is it a piece. If it's a piece, I'd really like to learn it.

    Hi Jonny, Thank you for these tips. What about the pedal? Should I push the pedal on the root until the chord?
    BTW, we all love you bud, you're the best of the bestestest. ;-)

    • @Aaron-md2eo
      @Aaron-md2eo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this really depends on the situation. If you're playing a fast stride piece I wouldn't suggest using the pedal. Altough if you're playing a slow ballad in stride it can very helpful to connect the basenltes and the chords and produce a fuller sound.

  • @wordofmo

    In the fourth measure you keep saying and playing F major seven but it’s notated as an F6. Which do you prefer?

  • @altosmusiclab2248
    @altosmusiclab2248 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    11:30 This is how to teach, NEVER: put middle finger on G and and ring finger on B etc.; Johnny gives the CHORD NAME then the 'treatment' is what I call it.

  • @davidepellegrini2246

    Sorry maybe this is a supid question...should the sustain pedal be released and then pressed again when changing from root note to rootless voicing with the left hand? or being a rootless voicing the bass note must not be interrupted because it would be like playing another chord?
    (Sorry for my bad English)

  • @lucyjazz1
    @lucyjazz1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi, great video, thanks a lot 😊 Should the F6 chord be a Fmaj7 instead ? It’s written F6 on the sheet, but the notes on the staff seem to be those of a Fmaj7 (if I’m not mistaken) and you keep saying Fmaj7... I’m a bit puzzled 😄

    • @PianoWithJonny
      @PianoWithJonny  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lucy jazz great question! You can play either an F Major 7 or an F6 on that measure and they will both sound good. In other words, F Major 7 and F6 are substitute chords.
