The wall is great. It gives your house a bit of a castle feel. There are so many ways to make it prettier, but it would be nice to keep it at that height and feel protected in the courtyard.
Rendering the concrete wall with a white finish would beautify it. Where you have a future outdoor seating or eating spot, an area on the wall with Portuguese Ceramic Tile would make it a feature. The other wall areas you could have a combination of climbing plants and your trees.
You have a lot of leftover wood. Make a support grid on the wall and run peas and beans on it. There are many types of runners. You can create a waterfall-like effect with flower baskets or a flower arrangement with hanging baskets. There are small vertical waterfalls that can be placed in front of the fence, surrounded by a few rocks, you can make a pretty little pond, which the birds would surely be happy about.
Sunday-morning grapefruit halves, with a sprinkling of sugar. Prepared by my mum, too! Thanks for the memory! The garden looks great! Enjoy yourselves!
You are spot on, that wall and enclosed area will evolve logically once the house is done. So, just grin and bear it, or as they say in Japanese, 'gaman'. The term means "enduring the seemly unbearable with patience and dignity". Which fits nicely in this context.
You're so funny, Meraid! I love that you are eating the asparagus without Dan and enjoying the spears fully. LOL! Your dinner looked delicious, BTW. You've both worked so hard on your garden and it shows. Life must be good looking forward to being in your new home and looking over the land you've both worked so hard to develop. Safe travels, Dan.
Your dinner looks so good! Having been widowed six months ago, I still can't bring myself to cook a decent meal. Maybe one day soon I'll start cooking again. I don't have a garden, but I do have a wonderful produce farm very close that I could get fresh produce from.
Ah, Roselyn, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure your husband would want you to take care of yourself and cook a lovely meal for yourself. You deserve it. Take care.
Put natural color stucco render on it with some nice stone cap, and plant contrasting trees/bushes in front of it. A perfect place to attach a stone fountain too.
Hi Meraid, I see those walls as a wonderful opportunity to do a central fountain. A serene space - can you imagine sitting on your veranda hearing the sound of water😍. Maybe a beautiful rose, lavender & gaura garden🙌🏻 I did one in my garden with an oval shape around the fountain. 8 sections filled with different roses 🌹 Lavender along my walls and gaura, ice cream bushes and shell/snail vines & wisteria up my pergola legs. I also have some fruit trees to the one side and olive trees in between the lavender on the longest wall. Just a thought and if you would like I could share some pictures with you of what I did - my walls are plastered with some detail (band & coping). You and Dan are such inspirations to me with your food gardens 💜💜💜
You naughty girl... Eating the asparagus when Dan's gone 😂 I would partially render the wall and paint it white and clad other parts with stone. Where the rendering is done I would grow ivy. I use the leaves to make my laundry soap and it works really well
I LOVE that wall. I would retain that wall beacuse it will turn your yard lovely by : 1. I would paint it in MALLARD green so that it sort of hides away, 2. I would have BOUGAINVILLAS growing on and over it, 3. in btw as you said Avocados which need protection from direct sun rays, wind and cold, 4. you can put flower tops on it with hanging plants, 5. it gives you protection and privacy. Make a good use of it and you will be happy to have it.
I just love all your videos ,your gardens are amazing ,your energy and Dan s are so contagious 😃I agree you about the wall ,and I know whatever you both decide it will be fantastic, lovd all thd ideas about thd patio ,I know it’s gonna bd gorgeous ,welcoming ,and one oc a kind !! Those asparagus look so good ,thd pie looks delicious ❤
I think the wall is fabulous; I would render it in one of the colours from the stone on the house, have a planting bed in front of it all and plant flowers and some trees. By the way your scarf is fab🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
As always, I love your garden and your dedication to the garden. I would love having that much land to grow things on. The progress on your construction is going well. Looking forward to your future videos. Thanks for sharing . Katie
Yes, I would also keep that wall. Always nice to have a, maybe, windless spot to sit in and I would also render or just paint it in stucco shades. Also lovely to have tender fruit planted there. I can think of cape gooseberries, maybe youngberries and buckets full of strawberries or other climbers that bears fruit. Oh and some containers full of fuchsias, dahlias and petunias! What a joyful place to have on any day of the year!
Hi Meraid and Dan, the garden looks beautiful. It inspired me to Start working on my veggie garden too. I love the orange tree and your olive trees are wonderful too. They must be very old, they are so mature. Thank you for sharing another great video. Stay well.
😂😂😂 Sorry Dan,!!!
My suggestion for your wall; Take the top course of block off. Then it will be 3 blocks high or about 24"s, When the plasterers are on site, have them put a simple smooth (white quartz sand) coat of render on the wall (inside, outside and on the the top (no coping). Just a very simple low wall of monolithic color (whatever the natural color of the plaster may be). That's a low cost solution and it will transform the block wall from an eyesore into an architectural element that defines a delightful patio & formal garden space. 😊👍 The Garden& patio space has a slope - so you can correct the slope with fill so the the inside height of the wall is ~24"s. At this height, you will be able to easily see over the wall for countryside viewing. Another feature for this spot is an almost fully inground soaking pool. Same render as the wall and barn with an 8" curb. Big enough for 4 adults to lounge on those scorching summer days with room to spare. 👍 I say no to a schist veneer. Stone will add mass and make the wall a distraction. Keep it simple. Render the barn wall too. Same color, same texture - no maintenance. Taking a simple approach will help the wall "disappear". Visually, there is enough texture going on with the house. The eye will be happy to take a break.
@@NearbyVeggies You folks are doing a lovely job with your garden design and execution. If you put pencil to paper regarding the courtyard space, by the time it is available for landscaping, you will have a magical design 😉 You speak so lovingly of your veranda, I thought this space could be a logical extension. A great space to be and a lovely space to view from above. All the best! 👍
Regarding your courtyard! Paint the walls white, fix up some trellis and plant grape vines and attach to the trellis. Then put limestone on the floor. The limestone will keep the vine roots warm during the winter and colder nights ❤😊
Nice visit to your garden! Obrigada pelas explicações! Love the ideia of protected courtyard for those delicate trees, already tried to bring avocados unsuccessfully… let me check on my espargos too 😉 boa semana!
I'd give that block wall a rustic look. Neatly re-point the mortar joints for strength and then color with oxide stains for concrete to give it a more stone-like appearance - and then look into doing some espalier fruit trees (citrus, avocado, etc.) on wood grid mounted to the block. Showy and green in the warm months, and sculptural in the cold months. :)
So my suggestion for the wall is as you concluded. Wait. Once the house is built and you enjoy it for a few months, then decide about the wall. One other thing to consider is just cutting out a doorway or pathway out to the garden maybe with a lovely trellis. And there are so many fruiting options for things that can be grown against a wall. Kiwi, raspberries, blackberries, other varieties of passion fruit and more
The ground looks excellent, just waiting for planting delicious items, you certainly are creating a quality of life worth while. Thank you both for sharing
I really enjoy seeing your garden. Still mostly winter weather here in NW Montana. So many possibilities for the ugly brick wall, paint murals, take some blocks out make some interesting shapes and render the whole thing. I’m sure you will have collected many ideas before you need to deal with it.
@@NearbyVeggies Evidence of your good care. Now you can choose to let go of the ancient branches and let younger branches take over. You whole garden looks so happy and healthy.

A walled garden would serve lots of purposes. Fire break...lots of fires in Portugal. I would stucco it. Put a beautiful fountain or koi pond in it. Put some lovely plants and a nice spot to sit. Comes in handy on windy days to.
Thabks for sharing yet another video with us. You two are like bees, never stopping. Your garden is like a quilt with many different patches. It is full of different plants and cultures. There r sometimes i get tired just from watching u guys work in the garden.
Dan/Merida, WRT to the block wall. I suggest that you render it and do a small amount of customization by interspersing some tile work along the face. I did this to a wall along the back of our property and used to 5-four inch tiles to make a cross shape. I did this in six places and it gave it a nice custom look. Jim
May I suggest you plant a Boston ivy as it would cover the bricks. You can plant espaliered trees along in front of it . You will love the look of more greenery. It will be a cheaper option. Btw loving your videos as it's a good relaxed styled to wind down after a day in my backyard patch.
An enclosed protected garden has its advantages if you want to dine outside on windy days. Or as you said to grow frost tender trees or plants. Bananas? Babaco papaya? Mango? Lovely video! Each video I admire your wonderful orange tree! Since when are your oranges ripe /when did you begin to pick them and how long will you be able to keep them on the tree/pick them for eating?
The oranges are ready from about December and last until June, but this year they are dropping off and moulding due to the relentless rain. We'll have to wait and see how long the last this year.
Hi. How are you. Donna from long Island ny here. We spoke last summer about m6 dogwood tree not blooming? You had advised me to prune early this spring.....i decided not to do that because in the spot its in we get alot of wind so if i prune the bottom branches off of it it would be top heavy....not good for the trees sturdiness. Its starting to bud now🎉...hopefully it'll bud flowers this year..😂 ill keep in touch. Thnkx. Donna
My suggestion: Apples, peaches and pears can be grown against a wall or fence in trained forms such as fans, espaliers or single-stemmed cordons. Walls that face the midday and afternoon sun will help to ripen fruits and are great for warmth-loving fruits such as figs.
Do they have personal lawnmowers over there? I don't think I've seen anyone use one there from all the shows I watch. hmmm That is a large area to strim.
Of course there are personal lawnmowers but we have rather lumpy land which is sloped too and not a lawn. We would always need the strimmer on the lower terraces
É uma pena vocês não ativarem as legendas para vários idiomas, português... até sua fala em português está impecável🎉🎉🎉 gostaria muito de acompanhar suas falas ... Florianópolis,Brasil🎉🎉🎉🎉
If that wall has a portion that gets the southern sun, why not attempt to esplanade avocado trees. If anyone can do it, you can! By being esplanaded you would not have to worry about the height and it would be easier to protect them during the colder weather.
What type of citrus fruit does the tree with orange fruit produce? I see so many on the ground and so many have not been picked and it is a real shame if there were oranges or clementines to see such a waste, with that they cost. You can make excellent jams to give as gifts perhaps to the parish for the poor . 🙂
Trees, especially avocado, will block your veranda view. I think you can get dwarf varieties of grapefruit. You could build raised beds along the perimeter of the wall and put in flowers with various heights and colors.
The wall is great. It gives your house a bit of a castle feel. There are so many ways to make it prettier, but it would be nice to keep it at that height and feel protected in the courtyard.
I agree! Just render it in stone. It has so many possibilities!
That's a great idea! Thank you.

You can spray stucco on the wall ,some natural lime or sand mix, and grow passion fruit
That's a great idea! Thank you. Not sure we can handle any more than 12kg of Passion fruit but we could plant another fruit

I’m going to look up fish pie
Potato top and fish in a sauce 😊
Could you grow espalier apple trees or some other fruit trees along the cinder block walls! Could provide your recipe for your delicious looking pie?
I used a fish pie recipe that I found on google

If that wall has a portion that gets the southern sun, why not attempt to esplanade avocado trees. If anyone can do it, you can! By being esplanaded you would not have to worry about the height and it would be easier to protect them during the colder weather.
Thank you for your ideas
If you are thinking of avocados, I would start them in pots now as it can take 7 years for them to bear fruit.
Thank you
Bom dia ❤❤
Bom dia. 🌞
Fifteen starts for a €. In Canada we pay 10 times that.
Your growers might need to heat tunnels to get the starts
What type of citrus fruit does the tree with orange fruit produce? I see so many on the ground and so many have not been picked and it is a real shame if there were oranges or clementines to see such a waste, with that they cost. You can make excellent jams to give as gifts perhaps to the parish for the poor . 🙂
It’s an orange tree. Some drop because of the heavy rain as they are moulding on the tree. Oranges and lemons roll down the streets here.
@@NearbyVeggies ah ok 🙂 thanks
Why don't you use the wall as part of lean to greenhouse?
Trees, especially avocado, will block your veranda view. I think you can get dwarf varieties of grapefruit. You could build raised beds along the perimeter of the wall and put in flowers with various heights and colors.
Thank you for the ideas.
