It's because in the manga it really felt like a single episode separating it would make it feel quite odd so someone clearly was like "Guys this won't work it needs to be 1 episode" seeing how good this was I wouldn't be surprised if multiple people came to the same conclusion it takes more than 1 person caring about the source material to make something this good.
I also think they knew it would have a much better impact thia way. If episode 1 ended with their reincarnation how many people would have dropped the show thinking it was just dumb? I love how much care they are putting into it

That stabbing really caught me off guard, I knew this show had dark elements to it but I wasn’t expecting that. And that final frame of Ai dead and smiling is chilling.

From what I have read, this is actually what he enjoys to do most. I haven't checked this, but someone said the first manga he wrote / draw was also a dark story and that Kaguya-sama was supposed to be yet another tragic story (and to be fair, even that light-hearted and funny anime had some AMAZING dramatic moments), but the editor managed to convince him against that idea. :)

They really did tackle the "dark" side of the Idol/entertainment industry and the Aqua is going to use that to his advantage to seek out and kill his father for what he has done I am definitely on board for this

Just know as a warning, this story goes through a lot more dark and depressing things but it’s not all this story is. So if it bothers you now, I don’t know if I suggest you stick with it, but I advise you too because the story is great.

i love how at the end where she was finally able to say i love you truthfully to Ruby and Aqua they represent both her children and her fans so at the end she was able to be honest to the two things she wanted to the most her fans and her family and found happiness as a mother and as an idol
This was an absolutely phenomenal episode, completely blew my expectations out the water. The art, the animation, the VA’s just everything was perfect they nailed every impactful and emotional moment. I actually teared up at Ai’s death it was sad man😢, her dead eyes with a smile on her face sent chills, really such a chilling shot.
That last scene, she wanted to share a bottle with them when they were grown up. But she didn't even make it to her 21st birthday. The bottle her manager was saving to celebrate her 21st, he ended up drinking alone. And he thinks of himself as the reason why Ai became an idol in the first place.
This is legit the first time i've seen lupa tear up cuz of a non-shonen anime, just shows how amazing this Work of art is, definitley left an emotional scar on a lot of people (myself included.... obviously) and i Just cant wait to see what comes next! (And for anybody saying "vinland saga" i just want you to know that i don't give a damn....aight)

This is one of my favorite first episodes of an anime I have ever seen. Just the rollercoaster of emotion and how sad it was for Ai to be killed. Then the rest of the episodes so far have been amazing
Oshi no Ko was made by Aka Akasaka, the mangaka for Kaguya-sama, but illustrated by another mangaka (Yokoyari Mengo). He is amazing with tonal shifts in Kaguya and we get to see similar hard-hitting moments in this series.

I’m at 25:29 and I have to say this has been such a cute and wholesome idol show so far! I had to pause real quick to type this but I can’t wait to see how this wholesome first episode ends!
Unfortunately I don't think this comment will reach y'all but I'll say it anyway: The title of this show is a really really clever wordplay. An "oshi" is the word used to designate your favorite member of a group. And "ko" can mean person/girl/child. So "oshi no ko" can either mean "favorite girl" (of an idol group) OR it can mean "the children of my favorite" so the children of the person you stan. It's such a genius title because the beginning of the show really makes you think that we'll follow Ai through her career and how she'll learn to love, but in the end, the real protagonists are her kids. Thus: "Oshi no ko"
I love the sparkle Ai and her kids have and how they show the idol or "it" status with that sparkle. Ai had the sparkle prior but it was dark when the agent talked to her about becoming an idol. Her twins only have the sparkle in one eye and after she died Aqua's sparkle was dark like hers was before she became an idol.
Damn, this is one of the few shows that I can rly feel the emotions of the characters like as if it's reality. The studio honestly did an outstanding direction on the adaptation. The no.1 rating on mal deserves it fr
Ai's death was so sad but I saw it coming unfortunately, definitely didn't make it any less sad though. The part that really made me tear up a little though was when the president's wife told the kids she'd take care of them in Ai's place as she thought of them as her own children. She didn't have to do that, but it was clear that she grew to love the kids and it seems like the same can likely be said of the children to her. She had some really good development in this one episode, from not wanting anything to do with her husband and Ai and the kids, to bettering her relationship with all three and then stepping in to take the kids in as her own officially after their tragic loss. Now that we've lost Ai, I hope at least she makes it through to the end of the series.

Saw a few images of this anime yesterday, but I thought it was just a typical idol anime.. until I just watched your reaction video, and oh boy was I soo wrong. The story caught me off guard and hooked me in so deep. Just like you all, and other viewers I had no idea what to expect, but seeing the pacing and story direction of this anime I'm definitely liking it a lot. This episode literally got me in the feels, and I had to hold back the waterworks from the mid towards the end of this episode. Can't wait to see how the story plays out, AND man the art style is gorgeous btw! The songs' are bangers too! Damn xD
It’s also made by the same guy that made Kaguya-Sama and these two anime are also in the same world. There are a few easter eggs showing that they’re in the same universe sprinked throughout the show
I started the manga years ago and it was one of the manga that immediately catched me. It’s a slow burn but it’s worth it. The anime was animated so well, the expressions suitable. Loved it 🙌

The last 5 minutes hit hard😢 I’m invested and will probably continue with the manga. But man I feel bad for Ai; she was about to reach happiness with her children after working so hard and then that happens. This story is written by Aka Akasaka who also gave us Kaguya-sama: Love is War so I’m expecting great things.

I appreciated how truthful the story is to the idol industry too. Especially in Eastern Asia countries like Japan and Korea the idol industry is brutal as hell. Some contracts even require idols to stay single through their career, and stalking issues reach unstable heights there too.
Even virtual idols experience such things like stalking. I remember that whole issue with AKB48 i believe where one of the girls shaved her head and made an apology video for being seen with a guy
I have a theory that Ai didn’t actually believe what she was saying to the stalker as she was dying-I think she was putting on the performance of a lifetime to disarm him and get him to leave so he wouldn’t hurt her children. Aqua had to get his talent from somewhere, right? We know she isn’t good with names, even with her agent or her kids. She probably got the stalker’s name in an adrenaline fueled flash of memory. A part of me would love to see a flashback, anime or manga, to when she’s talking to the stalker, except we get to see her thoughts…similar to how they portray acting in later episodes/chapters. It would be a cool opportunity to see her more manipulative/calculating side.

The title "OSHI NO KO" can be interpreted several ways in Japanese. One is "My Favorite Idol", another "The Child of My Favorite Idol". It is a well-crafted title considering what will happen.
This by the author of LOVE IS WAR, and is in the same universe set several years after the events of his previous work. All the characters from love is war still exist in this anime and are in their early 20's by now. In the manga for this show there was even a cameo of a certain character

supplementary notes: - to give a sense of scale, most everyone wants to perform at budokan - a venue that's for them at the cultural scale of people wanting to perform at madison square garden. that b komachi was already at budokan when sarina was a patient shows the degree of their popularity. the domes in japan, to my recollection, are usually used in their capacity as stadiums and could seat tens of thousands of fans (IIRC tokyo dome has one of the largest concert capacities at 55k). for any artist to tour exclusively at the 6 major domes is really big. but also, for that degree of popularity, in terms of probability, creeps and stalkers are also so much more likely - deluded shut-ins who didn't talk to anybody (or only talked online in toxic cesspools). - what the babies were doing is wotagei - calls and chants, mixes, and moves (waza). it's basically fans doing their part to return the energy from the idols and increase the hype, like a feedback loop of fun. that "oi! oi! oi! oi!" from the other fans is the typical call that's done to the beat - there's other calls that are also used depending on song structure and the specific song. mixes would be chants used during the intro or the instrumental break. one part of idol fan culture is that, while the calls are mostly whatever fits the rhythm, fans may organize and customize the calls for each song, and what mixes may be used (one might say the "babu babu babu babu" is the twins' "babu" mix lol). the waza, the moves that the twins were doing, are its whole entire thing. mainstream venues may only allow calls, chants, and mixes, but no waza. uchishi, those who are actively into wotagei, maybe even as its own dance subculture, would have their own groups (some are active on youtube, tik tok, and so on). technically you can theoretically apply wotagei to any song, and uchishi have their own fun making their own art of it. - what the twins were waving around were UOs! ultra oranges, aka UOs, are glowsticks that can get _very_ bright once cracked, but dim in a few minutes. so usually you crack them at the part of the song that gets you hyped! what the other fans have are penlights, noticeable due to the handles - they're battery powered lightsticks. some may sell depending on a specific idol's color. but there's general penlights that can swap between several colors. - the abdominal aorta is the largest artery in the body, so a stab wound can bleed out very quickly (an aneurysm there could bleed out in a minute for comparison); animation pacing for drama aside, moving to grab a phone while that murderer was right there might've been too risky. that moment was probably inspired by mayu tomita, who was left in critical condition from different wounds (stabbed 61 times), but did survive.

That last scene, she wanted to share a bottle with them when they were grown up. But she didn't even make it to her 21st birthday. The bottle her manager was saving to celebrate her 21st, he ended up drinking alone. And he thinks of himself as the reason why Ai became an idol in the first place.

This is legit the first time i've seen lupa tear up cuz of a non-shonen anime, just shows how amazing this Work of art is, definitley left an emotional scar on a lot of people (myself included.... obviously) and i Just cant wait to see what comes next! I love Oshi no Ko, and they went so far above and beyond for this first episode. I’m glad they’ve got everyone hooked now because it only gets better from here.
This is one of my favorite first episodes of an anime I have ever seen. Just the rollercoaster of emotion and how sad it was for Ai to be killed. Then the rest of the episodes so far have been amazing

Oshi no Ko was made by Aka Akasaka, the mangaka for Kaguya-sama, but illustrated by another mangaka (Yokoyari Mengo). He is amazing with tonal shifts in Kaguya and we get to see similar hard-hitting moments in this series.

Unfortunately I don't think this comment will reach y'all but I'll say it anyway: The title of this show is a really really clever wordplay.
An "oshi" is the word used to designate your favorite member of a group. And "ko" can mean person/girl/child.
So "oshi no ko" can either mean "favorite girl" (of an idol group) OR it can mean "the children of my favorite" so the children of the person you stan.
It's such a genius title because the beginning of the show really makes you think that we'll follow Ai through her career and how she'll learn to love, but in the end, the real protagonists are her kids.
Thus: "Oshi no ko"
I love the sparkle Ai and her kids have and how they show the idol or "it" status with that sparkle. Ai had the sparkle prior but it was dark when the agent talked to her about becoming an idol. Her twins only have the sparkle in one eye and after she died Aqua's sparkle was dark like hers was before she became an idol.
the way the animators make all the colors blend together and pop out is INCREDIBLE

Ai's death was so sad but I saw it coming unfortunately, definitely didn't make it any less sad though. The part that really made me tear up a little though was when the president's wife told the kids she'd take care of them in Ai's place as she thought of them as her own children. She didn't have to do that, but it was clear that she grew to love the kids and it seems like the same can likely be said of the children to her. She had some really good development in this one episode, from not wanting anything to do with her husband and Ai and the kids, to bettering her relationship with all three and then stepping in to take the kids in as her own officially after their tragic loss. Now that we've lost Ai, I hope at least she makes it through to the end of the series.

Saw a few images of this anime yesterday, but I thought it was just a typical idol anime.. until I just watched your reaction video, and oh boy was I soo wrong. The story caught me off guard and hooked me in so deep. Just like you all, and other viewers I had no idea what to expect, but seeing the pacing and story direction of this anime I'm definitely liking it a lot. This episode literally got me in the feels, and I had to hold back the waterworks from the mid towards the end of this episode. Can't wait to see how the story plays out, AND man the art style is gorgeous btw! The songs' are bangers too! Damn xD
It’s also made by the same guy that made Kaguya-Sama and these two anime are also in the same world. There are a few easter eggs showing that they’re in the same universe sprinked throughout the show
I started the manga years ago and it was one of the manga that immediately catched me. It’s a slow burn but it’s worth it. The anime was animated so well, the expressions suitable. Loved it 🙌

The fact that she said maybe they can all watch that video over drinks when they get older and how earlier in the episode they were talking about how she wasn't even old enough to drink yet and then she died. Makes that shit even more sad. "Maybe we can watch this over drinks" and homegirl died before she could even drink yet.

I appreciated how truthful the story is to the idol industry too. Especially in Eastern Asia countries like Japan and Korea the idol industry is brutal as hell. Some contracts even require idols to stay single through their career, and stalking issues reach unstable heights there too.
Even virtual idols experience such things like stalking.
I remember that whole issue with AKB48 i believe where one of the girls shaved her head and made an apology video for being seen with a guy
I have a theory that Ai didn’t actually believe what she was saying to the stalker as she was dying-I think she was putting on the performance of a lifetime to disarm him and get him to leave so he wouldn’t hurt her children.
Aqua had to get his talent from somewhere, right?
We know she isn’t good with names, even with her agent or her kids. She probably got the stalker’s name in an adrenaline fueled flash of memory. A part of me would love to see a flashback, anime or manga, to when she’s talking to the stalker, except we get to see her thoughts…similar to how they portray acting in later episodes/chapters. It would be a cool opportunity to see her more manipulative/calculating side.

Going completely blind onto this anime has to be the best decision I've made, didn't knew a thing before watching the episode and that really got me, amazing first episode altogether and looks like I have a new anime to watch lol
supplementary notes:
- to give a sense of scale, most everyone wants to perform at budokan - a venue that's for them at the cultural scale of people wanting to perform at madison square garden. that b komachi was already at budokan when sarina was a patient shows the degree of their popularity. the domes in japan, to my recollection, are usually used in their capacity as stadiums and could seat tens of thousands of fans (IIRC tokyo dome has one of the largest concert capacities at 55k). for any artist to tour exclusively at the 6 major domes is really big. but also, for that degree of popularity, in terms of probability, creeps and stalkers are also so much more likely - deluded shut-ins who didn't talk to anybody (or only talked online in toxic cesspools).
- what the babies were doing is wotagei - calls and chants, mixes, and moves (waza). it's basically fans doing their part to return the energy from the idols and increase the hype, like a feedback loop of fun. that "oi! oi! oi! oi!" from the other fans is the typical call that's done to the beat - there's other calls that are also used depending on song structure and the specific song. mixes would be chants used during the intro or the instrumental break. one part of idol fan culture is that, while the calls are mostly whatever fits the rhythm, fans may organize and customize the calls for each song, and what mixes may be used (one might say the "babu babu babu babu" is the twins' "babu" mix lol). the waza, the moves that the twins were doing, are its whole entire thing. mainstream venues may only allow calls, chants, and mixes, but no waza. uchishi, those who are actively into wotagei, maybe even as its own dance subculture, would have their own groups (some are active on youtube, tik tok, and so on). technically you can theoretically apply wotagei to any song, and uchishi have their own fun making their own art of it.
- what the twins were waving around were UOs! ultra oranges, aka UOs, are glowsticks that can get _very_ bright once cracked, but dim in a few minutes. so usually you crack them at the part of the song that gets you hyped! what the other fans have are penlights, noticeable due to the handles - they're battery powered lightsticks. some may sell depending on a specific idol's color. but there's general penlights that can swap between several colors.
- the abdominal aorta is the largest artery in the body, so a stab wound can bleed out very quickly (an aneurysm there could bleed out in a minute for comparison); animation pacing for drama aside, moving to grab a phone while that murderer was right there might've been too risky. that moment was probably inspired by mayu tomita, who was left in critical condition from different wounds (stabbed 61 times), but did survive.
