    Just imagine,a ship has approached you and has risen the Jolly Roger/variant,you see no cannons and so you think you are safe,then…40 small swivel guns are immediately mounted on the railing of the pirate ship.

    Wow, I never knew about the variants and types of ammo loaded into cannons! Looked at that double barrel and winced at how painful it’d be to get hit by one of those. Well researched!!

    I knew there was specialized ammo for taking down masts, but misunderstood the actual form factor of the chain shot. I didn't know it was two half-balls that fit into one another, that's pretty ingenious!

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've also seen more simple chain shot where it's just two cannon balls attached by chain. I'm not sure but I'd imagine this way they were able to get a better seal around the shot so they could get faster speeds.

      @@ThePiratesPort At the minimum, the decreased mass of the two half-balls vs two full-balls means the same amount of powder pushes the lighter shot faster.

      I’ll be doing something similar in the future. I would like to bust a lot of the pirate myths that have come up over the years.

    If I were a captain, I think I’d use almost exclusively small fragments of glass and any other sharp things I could find. Maiming the enemy crew (at worst) is so much better of a plan than outright killing them, because as stated you don’t wanna damage the ship and cargo if you can help it, and a person is more likely to attempt to help a fellow crew member to safety if they see them injured but not dead, which leaves them open to attack.

    In cannons only steel balls should be used when firing cannister shot otherwise the balls risk hitting each other and deforming in flight.

    Great video. Were there any cannon foundries in the Caribbean in Pirate' havens or all bought or stolen imports from Europe? Keep it up!

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! The guns would have been European as the manufacture of cannons was a highly specialized and complex process. Even in 1776 the foundries in the US had a difficult time producing cannons as the British had earlier made it illegal to cast cannons in the colonies.

    Why didn't civil war canons use 32 and 24 pound guns? They seem to only use small weight

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They used 24 pounders too, but also remember this is over 100 years after the golden age of piracy came to an end. Things changed due to new technologies and larger shot wasn’t always the best choice for a variety of reasons.
