Boat Trailer Winch Installation. Boat winch replacement on my trailers.

- Replacing a boat trailer winch is easy. In this video I cover boat trailer winch installation as I replace the boat winch on two trailers so that they are more appropriately rated for each boat. A strap winch rated at 3,200 lbs was on the trailer for my small lighter boat, and a boat winch rated at 2,500 lbs on the trailer for my bigger and heavier boat. I also discuss trailer winch capacities, what locking nuts are used for and having the right tools for removing boat trailer winches.
As a rule of thumb, boat weight to winch capacity is generally 2 to 1 which means that a 3,200 lb winch is able to handle a 6,400 lb boat. If the ramp isn't steep, the trailer has good rollers and short winching distances, you can usually increase the ratio to 3 to 1 - so it could potentially handle a 9,600 lb boat under ideal circumstances.
Conversely, with wooden bunks, steep ramp, and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1 meaning the same winch can only handle a 3,200 pound boat.

Well done Wayne. Installing mine this weekend! 3200lb as well. I think the "full drum" is when the strap is wound up, the weight rating drops every layer on the wench. Either way, 3200lb winch will be plenty for that beautiful boat of yours. You should trailer it down to the Savannah area and check out our low country boating world! Currently I am upgrading my lights, on the trailer to all L.E.Ds and of course the "red and white" reflective or conspicuity tape. We plan on trailering down to the Keys in a month or two! Oh, wheel bearings will be on the roster of things to do soon too. Thank you for your videos. You do a great job.

How is the performance of the new winch? Did you see an improvement over the old one? Was it easier winching the boat onto the trailer with 2-speed?
Because of the way I would load my big boat (more cranking than most people do) the 2 speed winch was easier.

Possible that you put yourself at a detriment due to the fact that the original winch on the bigger boat trailer is a 2 speed winch youll lose your mechanical advantage. As long as your big boat is under 4k lb that winch would be preferable to me . The handle can be switched to the further shaft from the boat to get the other gear ratio.
The Fulton F2 that I installed on the bigger boat's trailer is a 2 speed winch
Mostly about nuts & bolts, not much about winches. Waste of time.
