The biggest sin of the movie was taking the concept WAY too seriously. The original movie was never meant to be taken seriously since the director took influence on Scooby Doo (which he had written some of the episodes for) when he made it. People like Dead Meat or Nostalgia Critic felt the original sucked because it wasn't scary were missing the point of the first film's intentions completely and this remake showed why a killer Leprechaun movie doesn't work even if you did take it more seriously and made it realistic. It was made by people who didn't even care about the original. Hornswoggle in interviews said he claimed his version was better despite not seeing Warwick Davis's version and said nobody would remember who Davis was after seeing this version. The director himself had a hatred for the original movie that when the actors said they hadn't seen the original, he shouted "GOOD!" Nobody making the movie had any respect or care for the series at all. They may be campy and too much for some, but they all had a charm you can't hate on.
Wow Hornswaggle’s sounds like a dick, Warwick Davis is an icon before Peter Dinklage he was the go to dwarf actor for Hollywood. The man hosts Star Wars celebration on occasion, has his own game show, has been in multiple different popular film franchises and is an advocate for charities. I remember WWE promoting this heavily. I was a fan of Hornswaggle in wrestling, so it was an interesting choice to make him the new Leprechaun. But WWE produced films usually sucked and sadly this wasn't that good.
This abridged version was a hard watch. I can't imagine watching the whole thing. Decker has magic fingers, being able to turn something as garbage as this into something that is actually entertaining.

Honestly, the idea of them taking the concept of a Leprechaun and twisting it around to make it more of a monster than the traditional trickster isn't bad in concept. Other films have done something similar, problem is that by giving it the name Leprechaun Origins it makes it sound like it's connected to the previous films, which it obviously isn't. Movie should've shown us perhaps what the Leprechaun was like in his earlier years, like in medieval Scotland or something.

Here's the IMDB thing about the name. When Sophie finds the Irish book about the leprechaun in the cellar she informs the others that 'Tuatha Dé Danann' means leprechaun. The Tuatha Dé Danann in Irish mythology were actually a tribe of kings and queens with supernatural powers that were worshiped as deities.
That's right, well done. Somebody who knows his lore! Anyway, the leprechauns were Fir Bolg, not Tuatha Dé Danann. These two were both supernatural, but were in opposition to each other. Hysterical that film makers with big budgets have to be the dumbest idiots you could find.

As an irishman it is blindly obvious how little of a shit anyone on the production gave, for a movie set in Ireland everything is wrong, the group is hitchhiking in the backnof a pick up truck which are exceedingly rare in this country due to the consistent rain and the few that i have seen are relatively new 2000-present and only used by landscapers to move cuttings, secondly thats not an irish number plate, thirdly they are staying in a wooden cabin which are nearly nonexistent due to said rainy climate, wooden sheds disintegrate in 20 years so youd need to varnish that cabin every year. And finally the house had a basement, the only places that has basements are the really old houses in citys where the wealthy family lived above ground and the servants worked downstairs in the basement. But at best thats a few hundred buildings on an island of 8 million people. This is basic shit that could have been fixed by talking to one irish person or doing even the briefest search, but they didnt thats how little of a shit they gave and thats how you know nobody cared about making a good movie.
No magic, no concept or understanding on what an actual Leprechaun is, ripping off of Red Clover, the audacity of what Hornswoggle said about the Davis films and David himself, what the director claimed then being pissed that nobody even came close to liking the movie. Yeah, it's no wonder everyone disregards this one and does their best to forget it even exists.
WWE, the company which celebrates criminals, was run for decades by a man who is now under criminal investigations, surrounded by people with some of the most horrendous accusations thrown at them and who humiliate, insult and degrade normal hard working employees. Ay, to give this movie some credit, the main characters are all pretty likeable, and pretty resourceful. I really like that when one of them was dying, he used what little life he had to save his friends.
Not really the boyfriend leaves his girlfriend behind and the other guy's girlfriend also leaves him behind after he gets hurt risking his life to save them all when they are tied to the tree. The only likable ones are the main girl and the other girl's boyfriend who saved them all after they were tied up.
This just reaffirms my thought that the "See No Evil" films are the only good thing to come out of WWE Studios*. It's not parody, it's not self aware comedy, it's just good old fashioned slasher cinema, with one of the coolest slashers of the last 30 years. *I would count those Scooby-Doo films, but those are more Warner than WWE.
Love his reviews but one thing is that it’s not the bite in the third movie that turns the guy, its the fact that after the bite and leprechaun’s blood gets mixed
Gary Chalk is a fantastic actor. He can do a hillbilly accent, a Russian accent, and of course his typical Canadian accent. But my dude cannot do an Irish accent to save his life.
The Leprichan in this film is akin to the American Godzilla. Loathed and hated. Japan only refers to him as Zilla. So we could call this Leprichan Leppy.

When I heard Hornswaggle going to play the leprechaun I thought he was going to use his wrestling moves and crack jokes while he kills his victims but this movie did none of these things. This movie is an insult to the leprechaun franchise. The reason why the villagers didn't give back the gold because they were greedy idiots.
There was a movie "based" on the Marvel Comics character Man-thing which can be considered a anti hero back in the Nineties that did the same thing this movie did. Turned the movie into a generic monster movie that didn't resemble the character at all

The most dissapointing thing to me is the fact that a slightly more serious leprechaun film that maintains a sense of humor albeit much darker, absolutely works. Leprechaun Returns kind of did that (and i love it). But a higher budget film with a darker more sadistic leprechaun with creepier jokes would be amazing.

Yeah I'm one of those who doesn't really consider this part of the canon. It's just not Leprechaun, everything about it is the opposite of what it should be and it just fails so hard. As a reboot, it's crap because it replaces a character with personality with another version that has no personality. As a movie by itself, this is a passable 1 off watch monster movie.
Ugh.. it bugs me so much that in "The More Realistic" movie, they took an Irish faery creature (The Leprechaun), and turned it into... a regular non-descript American cryptid. I could be allowed to follow the Director and chant 'shame' for a week and not only do I doubt he'd care, he might try to assault me.

Just got here, so I'm not sure if he mentions it, but the actor who plays the Leprechaun in this film admitted to seeing none of the films of the original series. While also saying his version of the Lep was better, so there was no need to see the original films. Hubris like that is a major turn off for me. Also, I love how they hired a short person to play the Lep, but then put them on stilts and shit.
He was in Freddy vs Jason as the police chief as well. And if you count it as horror, he was in The Predator as the postman also. Guy will do anything for a few bucks haha
They should have called this movie "The Rake" this so-called leprechaun kind of looks like what I imagine the Rake creature would look like. Rremove the gold aspect and make a standard monster movie. Mighta had a better reception if it was marketed that way. Calling it The leprechaun made people expect something else.
I heard from some fans that they regards this like how Godzilla fans see Zilla from the 1998 Roland Emerich movie, many consider that Godzilla in name only and this Leprechaun in name only, it’s curious they attempted something different, but not only was it too different it didn’t work.
Not comparing the execution of Leprechaun origins to Godzilla 1998 but rather how fans rejected the radically different reimagining to the point of being unrecognisable.

Ay, to give this movie some credit, the main characters are all pretty likeable, and pretty resourceful. I really like that when one of them was dying, he used what little life he had to save his friends.
Not really the boyfriend leaves his girlfriend behind and the other guy's girlfriend also leaves him behind after he gets hurt risking his life to save them all when they are tied to the tree. The only likable ones are the main girl and the other girl's boyfriend who saved them all after they were tied up.
I'd call it a cross between Gollum and a Falmer from Skyrim. Except instead of the One Ring, he's after gold in general.

This just reaffirms my thought that the "See No Evil" films are the only good thing to come out of WWE Studios*. It's not parody, it's not self aware comedy, it's just good old fashioned slasher cinema, with one of the coolest slashers of the last 30 years.
*I would count those Scooby-Doo films, but those are more Warner than WWE.

Gary Chalk is a fantastic actor. He can do a hillbilly accent, a Russian accent, and of course his typical Canadian accent. But my dude cannot do an Irish accent to save his life.
The Leprichan in this film is akin to the American Godzilla. Loathed and hated. Japan only refers to him as Zilla. So we could call this Leprichan Leppy.
If the stone kept the creature inside a specific area, common sense says steal the gold and leave the area but that would make too much sense
Or just kill the creatures these Leprechauns have no supernatural powers they are just monsters why not just get a gang together and trap them all in some place and burn them all or blow them all up lol.

When I heard Hornswaggle going to play the leprechaun I thought he was going to use his wrestling moves and crack jokes while he kills his victims but this movie did none of these things. This movie is an insult to the leprechaun franchise. The reason why the villagers didn't give back the gold because they were greedy idiots.
The best WWE horror movie is See no Evil. Maybe it is the best movie that WWE ever produced.
There was a movie "based" on the Marvel Comics character Man-thing which can be considered a anti hero back in the Nineties that did the same thing this movie did. Turned the movie into a generic monster movie that didn't resemble the character at all

The most dissapointing thing to me is the fact that a slightly more serious leprechaun film that maintains a sense of humor albeit much darker, absolutely works. Leprechaun Returns kind of did that (and i love it). But a higher budget film with a darker more sadistic leprechaun with creepier jokes would be amazing.

Agreed. Chalk is the BEST Optimus ever and I hate seeing his talent wasted in garbage like this. "Stargate SG-1" utilized him much better.

I feel bad for hornswoggle I loved his run with WWE, He could have pulled off a real good Leprechaun a post Warwick Davis era version, but have simular make up and have personally, He didn't need to speak but have personality. Which missed the boat here.

Yeah I'm one of those who doesn't really consider this part of the canon. It's just not Leprechaun, everything about it is the opposite of what it should be and it just fails so hard. However I will grant that if you're just watching it as an unconnected bad horror movie it's on par with many others, still not good but not the worst I've ever seen ha. Great stuff as always Decker
As a reboot, it's crap because it replaces a character with personality with another version that has no personality. As a movie by itself, this is a passable 1 off watch monster movie.

Ugh.. it bugs me so much that in "The More Realistic" movie, they took an Irish faery creature (The Leprechaun), and turned it into... a regular non-descript American cryptid.
I could be allowed to follow the Director and chant 'shame' for a week and not only do I doubt he'd care, he might try to assault me.
next movie ... Leprechaun gets infected with T-virus, then gets assimilated by The Borg, then runs into The Thing and is assimilated again before finally being eaten whole by Godzilla who was recently bitten by a zombie
Just got here, so I'm not sure if he mentions it, but the actor who plays the Leprechaun in this film admitted to seeing none of the films of the original series. While also saying his version of the Lep was better, so there was no need to see the original films. Hubris like that is a major turn off for me. Also, I love how they hired a short person to play the Lep, but then put them on stilts and shit.
The way you run up to the camera reminds me of the "it's" guy from Monty python. I love it

They should have called this movie "The Rake" this so-called leprechaun kind of looks like what I imagine the Rake creature would look like. Rremove the gold aspect and make a standard monster movie. Mighta had a better reception if it was marketed that way. Calling it The leprechaun made people expect something else.

I remember watching this movie one night and your dissection of this film was perfect. It is exactly what you said, a movie.
I heard from some fans that they regards this like how Godzilla fans see Zilla from the 1998 Roland Emerich movie, many consider that Godzilla in name only and this Leprechaun in name only, it’s curious they attempted something different, but not only was it too different it didn’t work.
Not comparing the execution of Leprechaun origins to Godzilla 1998 but rather how fans rejected the radically different reimagining to the point of being unrecognisable.
This review was actually very entertaining in its own right. As an Éireannach born and bred, I'm impressed with your knowledge of lore and history.
That said, this film looked so awful, the only thing good that could be said to come out of it was DEFINITELY a review like this fine one. 👍

@@bradencampbell464 My favorite is the character Gavin from The Taking of Deborah Logan (a pretty good movie). Gavin works for a documentary crew until things get weird. Then he tells everyone "The Gavin train is pulling out!" and he drives straight out of the movie.
